Livermore Library Embarrassed By Mural

Summary: artiste gets commisioned to do a mural for a library, mispells 11 of the names of the people portrayed, including "Einstein, Shakespeare, Vincent Van Gogh, Michelangelo and seven other historical figures."

Reached at her Miami studio Wednesday by The Associated Press, Maria Alquilar said she was willing to fix the brightly colored 16-foot-wide circular work, but offered no apologizes for the 11 misspellings among the 175 names.

"The importance of this work is that it is supposed to unite people," Alquilar said. "They are denigrating my work and the purpose of this work."

Alquilar said it took her quite a bit of her own time and money to create and install the work, and that it sat idle at her Santa Cruz studio for two years until the city cleared the way for its installation.

There were plenty of people around during the installation who could and should have seen the missing and misplaced letters, she said.

"Even though I was on my hands and knees laying the installation out, I didn't see it," she said.

The mistakes wouldn't even register with a true artisan, Alquilar said.

"The people that are into humanities, and are into Blake's concept of enlightenment, they are not looking at the words," she said. "In their mind the words register correctly."

Urgh, I hate that whole 'I don't have to do research, I'm an artist' mentality. Stupid mistakes are not art. Unless you do them on purpose.

Blake might have been a delusional Swedenborgian hallucinating at the drop of a hat, but at least he could spell.

Wow, this wank is like a short car ride away from where I live.

Oh stop whining lady, you have united people...in mocking you.

Heh, I just saw that earlier today and was considering posting it myself.

No, a true artisan would have cared enough not to make the mistakes, you pretentious idiot.

Besides, I'm reasonably certain Michelangelo and Van Gogh would have noticed the misspellings. Luckily, they are true artisans.

GAH!! First she blames everyone else for not catching her mistakes. Then she slips right into poor, persecuted artist mode without missing a beat.

I want to drop a stack of encyclopedias on her. Just to help her out with that martyr complex she's got going.

If I were going to spend $40k on a work from an artist that, um, artsy, I think I'd give her a cheat-sheet. And maybe a couple of angry spelling Nazis with tasers to enforce it.

Hey there... Actually, I live in Livermore, at least half the year (ah, the college kid fleeing her home town). So yes, I have actually seen this. It's outside our brand new library, which is in and of itself really quite beautiful. This has been around for at least a couple months but apparently we made the news big time the other day for some reason or other o.0

yeeeeah... yknow, i really don't care. i thought it was pretty stupid that she misspelled einstein's name and rather disrepectful, but over all it really is a nice piece of art... this really is a rediculous, it is so not important, especially compared to livermore's other budget problems.

ps. argh, can't sign in. lj screenname i would have signed in on was themeadowlark.

Well, folks. it's settled. I looked up "artisan" in the dictionary, and it said;

A skilled manual worker; a craftsperson. A persen who does not rejister speling misteaks.

Oh, wait. That last part is scrawled in red crayon. Never mind.

She might turn out to be slightly smarter than we think.

See, the library people are paying her about $600 to fix the mistakes. That's quite a lot of money to do something that should have never been done in the first place.

Who's to say she didn't do the mistakes DELIBERATELY for extra cash?

hmm, if people were to pay me for screw-ups I'd do a lot more of them.
