Over in the lj community cross-stitch They have a low thresh-hold for what they consider trolling behavior.

It started when [info]ckat41 posted a pledge regarding Hobby Lobby's sales with a very political icon. Naturally some-one posts their own opinion about the icon and Ckat41 objects to a non member posting in the community. Not much to see there, but it lays some framework.

But later [info]midnightangelc posts a rant about all the trolls* who have been visiting the community recently. In the comments people begin espousing the view that no-one should ever post anything that doesn't involve cross-stiching(even though the rules don't prohibit off-topic posts, and don't regulate anything in the comments)

The whole time I'm watching and thinking about just how incredibly thin-skinned some of the people are.

*Now there was a more serious/amusing event of anonymouse trolling involving copyright infringement but it was deleted before I could save and share it.

Ah yes, it's time for 'stop having my hobby, you're making my hobby look stupid.'

I'm just trying to figure out the "OMG you disagree with my icon. You're a troll!!!!111!!!" logic of ckat41

I'm scratching my head on that one as well. I would think the more reasoned response would be something along the lines of not everyone's opinions are the same so why don't we agree to disagree?

I'm not sure, but I imagine it is possible to maintain an LJ and join a cross-stitching community and never encounter anything more provocative than a remark about your icon.

Would explain the agitation, perhaps.

Interesting point. It's good to remember that not everyone on the Internet lives on F_W like we do.

I've decided that if I ever run a community, all political icons would be banned in posts. You'd think people could just ignore a 100^2px image, but nooooooooo.

Is it just me, or do communities for things like knitting, cross-stitch, etc, get more than their fair ahare of shitfights?

It's true. And nothing will ever beat the God's Pubic Hair wank. *wipes away a nostalgic tear*

even in the "scroll frame vs. hoop" debate we're all still friends

It just amuses me to hell and back that Xstitch not only has topics that are considered possible flamewar material, but apparently has them enough to give them names.

I wonder if this is their version of Crystalwank. Maybe somewhere out there are icons that say "My hoop's tension is twisted on, yay!"

Fascinatingly, the thing that crossed my mind was not, 'how goofy and trivial' but 'people still use hoops?'

I use hoops partly because I've never seen these Q snaps people talk about and don't feel like spending money on a scroll frame.

I'm too cheap for a scroll frame. I usually just spread it out as flat as I can on my lap because I always overstretched my fabric with hoops. :-)

Damn. I know ckat from elsewhere. (Did not know that her politics would piss me off. Heh.)

But yeah. When did "troll" start meaning "person who disagrees with me and says so"?

Cross-stitch. Sheesh. I'm just waiting for a macrame flamewar.

About the same time "wanker" also picked up that definition, maybe?

This is entirely possible.

Wow, I am a member of that community and somehow I managed to miss that wank, damn. That is probably a good thing though because the logic of someone being a troll because they disagree is just dumb and by voicing that I am sure I would have been labelled a troll as well.
