OMG she killz animals for art!!!!!111

This thread has it all. Let's see, arguments over the morality of meat-eating, animal experimentation and using leather, the displacement of nature by human settlement, vs. using taxidermed animal's head for art. Then there are the arguments over how she killed the animals. Iraq even gets mentioned, slong with survival of the fittest and the effectiveness of on-line petitions.

The OP puts it all in perspective (heh) when she says "So... if I killed you and wear your head in top of a bucket, just to take a photo its ok?"

For those who care, here is the artist's statement.

Oh, and I am disturbed by the statues, mocking title aside. However, there is no data on how the animals died, so I can only saw 'ew, creepy,' and not write angry letters to the art gallery.

I think there might be something wrong with me; I totally laughed at the bunnies-in-jars, but then felt bad for the puppet-mice.

I was disturbed by the cats in the vases, but that's because I am an unabashed cat lover with three of my own. I did laugh at the chicken feet in the boots.

And I wonder if the people protesting would be as upset if the artist was using animals who were killed simply because they weren't wanted anymore.

That's... er... interesting.

This is actually the second artist I've come across this week who uses dead animals in her art.

New trend?

Something about the fact that she insists on killing the animals herself really bothers me, I don't know why.

Also, I think her art sucks. I think the whole dead animals thing would bother me less if it wasn't so clearly 'look at me, look at me!'

I prefer Victorian taxidermy. All those hundreds and hundreds of bunnies in frock-coats and kittens dressed up for tea-parties, not to mention the redundant 'scientific' specimens from hundreds of different third-rate 'naturalist's' expeditions to the colonies (sometimes including bits of the benighted natives.) Something about the attitude of ohmigodsofascinating, let's kill it and stuff it in a glass bell jar really amuses me! All that sort of thing went out after the whole messy, embarassing Great Auk affair.

Nothing will ever really beat a good old-fashioned two-headed lamb in a glass jar, though.

Ok, that was very tangential.

On reading more of the comments, what I find the most offensive is the OP telling people to come to her house so she can kill them and use their corpses as art, because she's so angry at them not being as offended as she is. The hell?

Heh. That reminds me of a wank that took place in my city a couple years ago when a local artist who was working on a provincial grant strung up dead rabbits outside. Oh, the letters to the editors of local newspapers were an endless source of entertainment for me that month. Good times.

I have an issue with dead cats that goes back to finding my kitten squished in the yard after my neighbor ran it over. However, if she's humanely killing these animals, the only thing she's doing that's different from what your local human society does is sticking them in pots. Can't say I like it, but I can't say I think she's an evil psycho either.

For some odd reason, even though I'm an animal-rights person, I was looking at her gallery and going, "COOLNESS!"

Maybe I have a fascination with morbid stuff...I also liked the artist who sliced up cows and horses and put them in square block-things of formaldehyde. Now if people would go out and do the same thing to humans...I would love to see that exhibit.
