Gay. It's the new black. Except not so much.
An anonymous commenter pointed the following out to me. Enjoy.

Msscribe makes a post stating "It's time to get black, gays!"

There's a lot of "Yeah! You go, sister!"

But of course there are those that disagree...

And those who get wanky and tell Msscribe "Basically, you look like a white chick so what the fuck do you know?" (since Msscribe explains in her first post that she's passed for white before)...

And the obligatory "It's a choice to be gay!" post.

Five pages and counting.

Wow. Somehow I find that person saying that you can't be black if you're happily married and successful a bit more racist than those who think that black people need to be "kept in their place."

But then again, I'm just whitebread who doesn't have to worry about "how I look when I'm driving" so what the hell do I know?

I'm confused. Did I stop being black when I quit my job, then? Is my girlfriend black because she's unemployed and on social security? I've been to college and she hasn't--does that mean I'm white and she's black? Neither of us can dance--what does that mean?

I think I might have to slap a few bitches, honestly. While the anonymouse is lamely spooging about ghettoization over a fucking pin or such, the OP wants us to disrupt our lives and be all about 'teh gay!' so we can be political and shit.

Yeah, there's your Earth Logic right there. Stick our fucking necks out into the fire-fight, eh? No thanks; the fact that I'm a lesbian doesn't make me stupider than the average person.

[mops up with a towel] Ah, that was a good one.

I don't think it ever occurred to her that some people just don't think their sexuality is everybody's business. I don't think that the lady who runs the nearby store cares who I fuck. Or wants to know. And I don't want her to know, either.

Bitch, please.

I regard my sexual/gender identity the same way I regard my disability...If you don't notice it, fine. I'm not going to shove it in your face. But if you DO notice it, I will calmly explain it to you.

All in all, I'm just another human being trying to get through life. Like the first dissenter, I feel it's who you are on the inside that counts, not the specific group you belong to. Else I would have had "I'm Better than You Because I Tic" printed on a T-shirt by now.

Personal opinion here, but I don't like Msscribe's attitude one. little. bit.

Bisexuality is about as defining to my identity as my unholy passion for my mom's lasagna is. People don't need to know that up front, do they?

Things would go much smoother if we stopped arguing about "choice" and "lifestyle" between ourselves and just realised that it does not fucking matter. We should be allowed to live our lives however we see fit on principle alone. "It harms no one and I *want* to" should be enough.

At this point in time, people will only see the badge and not the person. You need to change that before anything else, IMHO.

Black skin, yellow stars and pink triangles have never alerted a single person of people disappearing, people being killed, people being discriminated; you could say that these symbols made it easier to see through the people wearing them and to forget them.

I agree with the poster ivyblossom that this was a damn good point made by the first anon(not last anon who gets a big "bitch please").

Personally, I think gays should chuck the triangles and just walk into a room and yell "I'm homo-sex-u-al BITCH!" Rick James style.

tourette
2004-11-09 12:22 am UTC (link)
I'm slightly torn. On the one hand, I do get a bit annoyed by the people who claim that someone saying "I'm gay" is "shoving it in our faces" (when heterosexuality is shoved in my face whenever I open a magazine, by that logic), and I do think that people who want equal rights ought to be open about themselves and their concerns.

On the other hand, my sexual preference is "?" which is quite hard to be properly open about ("Hello, my name is Tourette, and I don't know what the fuck's going on"). Furthermore, I'm not actually getting any sex and don't really want any right now. Much as I'm probably not straight, and much as I do very much want equal rights for everyone, I don't think it'd be right for me to claim myself as one of the mass opressed.

Hmm, this is scary, since I'm researching shit like this. I wish teh internet would stay out of my real-life.

What I don't get is: the fuck is with the Black comparison all the time? Can't the be a little more diverse in their metaphors? You want to talk about people suffering for their causes, what about the Suffragettes (did I spell that shit right? ugh, I need coffee)? What about the poor shits living in Palestinian refugee camps? How about the trade unions?

Oh, that's right. They're unpopular causes these days. You'd think that would make them have more relevance to gay rights, though...

To summarize for easy reading:

Gay may or may not be the new Black. Some people are both. Anti-gay marriage amendments are bad. Black can be capitalized. So can Gay. Even if one is bell hooks. Unless one chooses not to because it irritates one, or because one doesn't say White or Straight. Apparently there's a logical process involved here. Black may or may not be a cultural distinction. Not all blacks are African-Americans. Not all blacks in America are African-American. Some people don't want their sexual identity worn on a sticker that may or may not be purely metaphorical. Others like that idea. Godwin's Law lives, fat and happy and rolling in the wank. Some people are apparently offended by this discussion. Others aren't. Maybe tattoos are the answer. But probably not phosphorescent tats. Though cards in bicycle spokes make [info]ashenmote feel pretty and witty and gay. People are apparently scared of teh_gay because they don't understand the physics. But probably not in the same way they're scared of teh_disabled. Metaphors are not diverse enough for some people's tastes. Ze Germans are coming wit de pronouns like te and ter and snitziwinkle. Anons are distressingly cavalier about using their names. Lots of people are wanking. [info]dreamtoday is apparently lost and needs direction to the comm s/he (but not "it," apparently) was looking for. The sarcasm, though well-intended, falls flat when s/he apparently thinks this is [info]fandom_wank rather than [info]otf_wank. It is a "d'oh!" moment, but it happens to the best of us. No-one is better than anyone else because s/he tics. Brains in vats can't change lightbulbs, except in a Gedankenexperiment sort of way. Someone wonders what [info]darkrose's motivations are. Somebody else takes the trouble to search out capitalization rules on-line. Apparently one may or may not be allowed to capitalize words. Someone else posits that netspeak is the new Martin Luther King Jr. Or, possibly, the new Harvey Milk. I consider noting that I don't like the taste of milk, but forbear because no-one fucking mentioned, dumbfuck!

How's that?

I'm amazingly uncomfortable sharing what I had for dinner with people at work. That's far more integral to who I am than who I'm attracted to.

So saying that would mean I was in the closet? Fuck no. My sexuality isn't anyone's business now unless I make it theirs, and being gay wouldn't change that. I'd tell the people I trust, and if you said I was still in the closet or ashamed of my sexuality, I'd beat you over the head with a copy of Please Understand Me II shouting "Introverted, bitch, look it the fuck up!"

And saying I need to live my life the way she wanted for the greater good? Sorry, my life isn't there as an education for the mundies, and saying it ought to be or else I'd be a bad lesbian is offensive.

I will not make my life a living hell for anyone's version of the greater good. Being a fuckhead to people who feel the same is a shitty thing to do.

...Am I really the only person who thinks that it's much less likely that "hey, that's wrong, I'm X too" will result in an informed change of an opinion than it might in, say, getting my ass handed to me? Why does it make me a bad person that I restrict my arguments to people who I think are actually convinceable, and to restrict them to being logical arguments? The phrase in reference is to only "sow on the path and in the rocky places", innit?

I vote, I convince, I'll campaign next time it's actually available, I'll even go to a rally if you promise I can run away from anybody hitting on me. But no, I'm not going to just show up in front of friends/co-workers/whatever and try to convince them that it's okay because I'm whatever, even if it does come up. Your morals or not, I have my life and limbs to think of.

A logical argument should stand on its own regardless of who's speaking it, and I don't think any cause wants me trying to influence anyone with an emotional argument in its favor. I have enough trouble trying to interpret people without actually trying to manipulate them.

...ok, stop me if I'm wrong here, but honestly? I thought the point was that it shouldn't matter whether you're in Group A, B, or C, because we're al freakin' human. I mean, I know it doesn't really work that way, but the more you push to say "I AM DIFFERENT" the farther you move away from your goal of just being treated like a regular person. Make up your mind...man or martyr.

Ehn - I don't really care. My nationality is pretty much ignored (part native, and I wasn't even born on a reserve or many ties at all to my 'tribe' other then my status card) so it doesn't bother me much. You are what you are and you can't exactly change it (unless you're Micheal Jackson).

Someone pass over the firewater please. ;)

RE: Gender neutral pronouns
"OMG they r just 2 be PC how stoopid" - FUCK YOU. "'It' and 'they' are perfectly acceptable." - Not really. "It" suggests non-humanity to most people (I know I'd start to want to punch anybody referring to me as "it"), and "they" is very unclear. "There are way too many sets of gender neutral pronouns floating around, it's driving me fucking crazy." - Yeah, me too. I want a standard set already. "Language should never be added to or changed in any manner." - ...Damn, you're stupid.
RE: Gay marriage
I am GOING to marry Danielle. It WILL happen one way or another. End of story, kiss my ass dear Mister President.
RE: Awareness of gays
Casually mentioning my girlfriend in the way someone straight would casually mention their girlfriend or boyfriend is NOT "shoving it your face", you MORONS. However, I am not going to wear a marker showing which genders I find sexually attractive or join a club based on it. That feels incredibly pointless. That does not mean I do not care about or will not do anything about civil rights issues. It means I don't need to shout "I'M BI!" in the middle of the grocery store, because it is in no way relevant.
There. I wanked, and I am satisfied. NINTENDO TIME.
