Sweetie, questioning me is a waste of my time
In another entry in the "If you don't agree with me, you're stupid (or a sexist pig or a useless woman who lets sexist pigs rule her)" files, we have [info]ginmar's take on prostitution. The wank comes in when people disagree with her argument that prostitution is teh ebil and must be BANNED FOR LIFE. These threads quickly quickly devolve until the only rebuttal left is "your reading comprehension sucks!" or "stop wasting my time!"

It just wouldn't be a complete wank without an anonymouse, now would it?

Ginmar has some good points, but as usual, unless you agree with her 100%, you're clearly a stupid sexist rape-enabling troll.

I still want to know how keeping prostitution illegal is going to lead to the feminist utopia where there's no power imbalance ever in sex, and people just stare meaningfully into one another's eyes and achieve mutual simultaneous orgasms. And I do love the bit where male prostitution = sexism because the gay men are being put in the position of women. It's so...MacKinnon/Dworkin.

If she took that patronizing, condescending attitude to the ACTUAL PROSTITUTES that she's trying to "save", they would, at best, not listen to a word she says and at worst call her a condescending twat and spit in her face.

She sounds like one of those 1930s society matrons who took it upon themselves to save people from themselves. Except at least those society dames actually did real charity work while they were acting so high-and-mighty. Ginmar here obviously thinks she knows what's better for streetwalkers than the people doing the walking. Which is hilarious because I'm willing to bet she's never held a conversation with a sex worker in her entire life. And honestly, does she think prostitution is going to magically disappear? What is she hoping for here? It sounds like she just wants an excuse to make circular arguments with total strangers on the internet, because I certainly don't get the impression she knows what she's talking about.

This crossed my mind, too. Your answer:

ginmar: I lived in a neighborhood with prostitutes. I read about them, observed them, talked to many people who helped them and studied them.

You'll notice she never says anything about actually TALKING to them. Of course, if she did and they told her she was blowing smoke out her ass, she'd just call them "entitled little shits," too. (I love how people have to be super polite to her OR ELSE BE BANNED, but she can be so rude to them as to make me embarrassed for her. The "it's my journal and I can do whatever I want" argument is moaning from the strain.)

Nothing makes me crazier than women who say, "Well, I think women should be equal and all, but I'm not a *gasp!* feminist!" as if "feminist" is some dirty word. But then I read stuff like Ginmar's post (well, really, her responses to the comments), and I go even crazier. This? This is the reason why "feminist" gets such a bad rap. And I even agree with some of her points (though not the main one).

Of course, that's also why I avoid [info]feminist like the plague. I'd hate to go on a "YOU ARE NOT HELPING" comment rampage.

I personally think it's logical to assume that, as long as society has currency, and as long as there are people who want sex, there will be people prepared to shell out money to get some, and there will be people who need money badly enough that they will be willing to have sex for it. I've heard people say "This hasn't been proven" and indeed it hasn't, in the technical sense - but this is only because we haven't seen a society without currency for thousands of years. It just seems like logic to me, since sex and money are very important to all but the very most spiritually enlightened. I think the very best thing that can be done is to improve conditions for sex workers so that they don't have to work in unsavoury conditions for abusive and cruel bosses. I don't think we will ever eradicate prostitution, but I do think we can help improve things for prostitutes.

You know, I'm just thinking about this study I read some time ago that involved a colony of simians (I can't recall what kind off-hand, chimps probably) that had been taught to work with a token system. They'd get tokens they could redeem for food or treats and stuff, but only if they interacted with the other chimps well and that kind of thing.
Then the researchers noticed that some female chimps got tokens, but never really did anything.
They leave the cameras on at night...and voila! The chimps were banging eachother for tokens.

Does that make those male chimps sexist? :O

That made my head hurt. Every time anyone tried to qualify their opinions on the culture that would make legalizing prostitution such a bane for women using, like, other facets of that culture they got shut down. OMG, STOOPID! It's about SEX! Not CAPITALISM! STOOPID!
