Pet ownership: a sign of emotional stuntedness?
You wouldn't think a found pet announcement would be controversial, would you?

Meet Gillen, who thinks that microchipping your cat is evil!

Then there's Ghostlight, who wants to know if you'd microchip your kids (and has the annoying habit of putting everything inside Spanish question marks).

According to Gillen, people use pets as a replacement for human social contact. No, dummy, that's what the internet is for! (Well, and Porn--but I think that counts.)

Here's Gillen's Five-Year Plan for breaking humanity's addiction to animal companionship.

Ain't it cute?

ETA: Gillen is featured on LJ Drama and takes on the commenters there.</a>

Best response to the "would you microchip your kids" question:

No, I'd let them get lost in the woods and die

Hah!

Anyway.

If domesticated animals had anything particularly vital to say, like, "Please stop feeding me this crap," or "No microchips, plzkthx," I'd like to believe they'd have already forced themselves to evolve into a species that could easily overthrow humankind. Until then, I'm perfectly content seeing them as particularly expensive and dependant stuffed toys. Aaww, cute!

Oh please, gillen. You know perfectly well that microchipping pets has nothing to do with love. It's all about having our alien overlords keep track of your every move through the use of cute, cuddly animals. And when the time comes, the chips will be activated and you will be ripped to shreds by Spot and Morris and Fifi, with only your copies of cuddly bunny snuff films and a suicide note left behind.

If only you'd warned the world of the threat of pets sooner, you wouldn't die in such pain and torment.

*pets kitties*

This is one of the best responses I've seen on that thing. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/seattle/2147202.html?thread=22682242#t22682242)

Gah. When there aren't bigger problems to worry about, people will find smaller problems and things that aren't even problems to wank about.

Actually, even when there are bigger problems to worry about, people still find stupid things to wank about.

I agree with [info]gillen on one thing: Mankind is crazy.

Things I've learned from this:

There's something called "nuclear gas", which is, apparently, not going to be detoxified by a microchip.

Microchipped pets are little bandwidth hogs running amok.

Pets: the new crack, just fuzzier.

I'm sorry, my mistake... Pets: the new methadone.

Pet owners: childish, emotionally crippled, and apparently easy to troll.

Gillen knows everything.

*scritches her enslaved, intellectually stunted, hopelessly dependant child/friend surrogate's head* Who's a good boy? Eww, dog breath...

I will give up my cats for human companionship the minute I find a human who is a) soft and fuzzy, and b) will be happy so long as I feed it, play with it, and cuddle it.

And it has to consent to eating food that costs less than a dollar, one can of which will stretch to 3 or 4 days.

My fiancee's mother would microchip her kids. Let's see... amber alert and finding the bodies six month later, or an exact GPS location the minute they're snatched? Tough one.

Hmmm. I'm apparently a friend of Gillen. Interesting.

My cat has a microchip. I've rewired it so I can control her every action remotely. It has a PURR button, a MEOW button, a TAKE A SHIT IN THE YARD button - everything. It's great!

That said, it bugs me that people are taking this opportunity to bash us left-wingers. ::points up to Mattador's comment in particular:: Obviously anyone who would vote for Nader must be batshit. [/sarcasm]

So, am I automatically on Gillen's gold-list just because I can't afford to chip my pets? Yeah, that makes sense.

It seems to me she should be more offended that I don't do anything if a pet disappears than if I decide to prevent losing my pets.

Okay. Gillen says mankind is insane for putting in microchips that actually *protect* your pets and help track them if they're lost. Okay. Then he goes on to compare them to security blankets when they're really nothing more than a companion that you feed daily and watch as they shit on your rug. Okay. Then he has the time to tell us all exactly what WE are doing wrong and how to fix it.

Somebody please tell him to put his copy of Animal Farm back ON the FUCKING TABLE and STFU. His pretentiousness makes my eyes bleed as does the obvious wind coming from his mouth that should be coming out of his ass by all means.

Christ, my head hurts.

I'm positive they *do* microchip kids. At least they were planning to--there was an article about it in one of the parenting magazines at the peditrician's office.

And a replacement for social contact? They clearly don't know my family--anything my parrot says is *bound* to be more intelligent than anything my dad says.

Gillen - We need to interact more socially. Our future depends on people connecting MORE.

Gillen: "I have a plan to make humanity happier and better off! Never mind that you don't like the plan! Never mind that the plan is vague, badly-argued, cruel, and irrelevant. Never mind that the plan would require you to change your entire life and give up things you love. IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPIER, I SAY! Now, either agree with the plan or admit your subpar intelligence. ALL HAIL GILLEN, FOR HE ALONE KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR EVERYONE ELSE!"

If he was arguing that pet ownership is cruel to the pets, I could see his point. If he was arguing that pet ownership is a rather silly idea, I could see his point. But he's arguing that pet ownership is dooming the human race, and that... just....

I love the "because it's not natural" argument. 'Cause frankly, if we all lived according to "nature," we'd have horrible teeth and lice and no indoor plumbing; half of us would die at thirty, some of us eaten by wild animals, and we'd have kids with, pretty much, whichever guy could hold us down longest. Also: no Internet, no heating--in theory, no *clothes*--no cooked food, no easily-obtained food, no law...

Yeah. Nature. It's awesome.
