Librarian Wank!
I've been expecting this since this community started.

Over at Library MoFo (The Society for Librarians Who Say Motherfucker), [info]lamuella posts about parents who wait until six o'clock the night before to look for books on a school project when everyone else in the class has the same project and...well, you can read.

[info]riurik objects to the community being used for its intended purpose. A lot. Several other harried librarians jump on him for being sanctimonious and prissy.

And finally, our esteemed moderator deems it necessary to clarify the purpose of the community to those who clearly don't get it.

Edit: Because a link to the actual post might be helpful

Wow. That's some first-class wanking there!

Nothing like some abuse of the first amendment to start off a morning of paper-writing.

you are criticising me because I criticized someone. What the hell kind of free speech is it if I can't tell someone they have a bad attitude?

It never, never, never ever gets old. How can you write this sentence without seeing what is wrong with it?

Heee, amusing wank. I love me my [info]riurik's attitude of 'this world would be a better place if all people would be more like I'.

But in the end it comes down to [info]lamuella being the default winner for having a cat in her icon, of course.

I'm sure there isn't a librarian in the world who hasn't wanted to call a patron a stupid motherfucker after he/she asked something like: "Can you help me find a book? I think it was green. Or maybe red."

Also: IF SOMETHING IS NOT THE MOTHERFUCKING UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, IT CAN NOT VIOLATE YOUR MOTHERFUCKING FREEDOM OF SPEECH, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!

That was therapeutic.

This is why I love being the IT Librarian. I don't deal directly with the students or faculty, and problems and questions get shuffled to me only after they've been through the filter of the reference librarians and they can't figure out what's wrong.

Mind you, one of the last problems I got was that someone couldn't access an article in one of the electronic journals, and the librarian gave me volume, month, day, pages, article title ... everything, in fact, but the NAME OF THE JOURNAL, which you would think would be an obvious piece of information to include.

On the bright side, a quick Google on the article title solved the problem of the journal title for me, and then I discovered that it wasn't an IT problem but a licensing issue, so I got to boot the problem over to Serials. Yay!

I would also like to announce that I love working for a place that's actually willing to put money into things.

I really really miss my job as a Circulation and Reference Librarian. I gave it up to move east, but I still consider myself to be a librarian, even if I'm not currently doing that.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I enjoyed being the Stupid Questions filter. ;)

"Can you help me find a book? I think it was green. Or maybe red."

This is why you need to consult your local bookworm teenager. Because I used to find books based on descriptions like that.

I used to do that when I was working at a bookshop, too.

"I'm looking for that thick mint-green book you had in your show window a few months back ..."
"Oh, the collected essays of Umberto Eco? Here you go."

Most mystifying is that this guy is reading Eco, I supoose.

There's actually a university somewhere out there that has a catalog of bound periodicals searchable by color and size. I forget where it was for but I thought that was pretty cool.

Library pages rock at that game, because they're the ones who actually handle the books day in and day out. If I had a nickel every time I found the "big red book on the top shelf" ...

This is wonderful. I wish I were a librarian, just so I could join this community. (Is that a ridiculous reason for goign to university? I don't think so!)

When [info]bossieboots created this community, I don't think she had nothing but lofty uses of the MF word in mind - otherwise it would be called LWSMFOWIMJ (Librarians Who Say Motherfucker Only When It's Morally Justified).

I also know an old lady who swallowed a horse, but sadly the video is no longer legally available.

THESE ARE MY PEOPLE.

If you like random library ranting and strange stories, I recommend this blog: Tales from the "Liberry". It chronicles the daily life of a semianonymous library employee working in a library in a small town in West Virginia. Funny as hell.
