Buddhist Veggie Wank!
Over on the LJ [info]buddhists community, strawbryfields posts this:

Hi my vegetarian/vegan friends. I understand that you are against violence. However, I believe that plants as well have souls. All life is connected and you can't get away from it. What's the difference (if any) of eating plants instead of animals?

People become outraged when strawbryfields keeps using an irreproducible probably bogus experiment to show that plants have feelings.

Add the token fruitarian...mix well...SPOOGE!

WHAT IS LEFT FOR US TO EAT?!

No, wait, don't answer that. I can probably guess.

Man, I want an atheist Buddhist to jump it. It would probably make the OP's tiny little head explode.

Actually, Buddhism is an atheist religion; it's more like a philosophy than anything. However, a lot of people mix Buddhism and Neo-Pagan beliefs...so that could be the cause of this.

Well, in theory it's atheist, but some Buddhists do believe in a divine being, or at least that Buddha himself was divine. It has a large following, so naturally not everyone believes the same thing.

Or so we've been told in class. Ahem.

Yep, it depends what kind of Buddhist you are. I'm sure millions of Buddhists in China and Japan and other parts of Asia would not consider themselves atheists or philosophers.

IIRC, Theravada Buddhists see the Buddha as divine, while Zen Buddhists don't. Can't remember about Mahayana Buddhists.

Mayana Buddhists would definitely see Buddha as divine. As far as I can remember, M. Buddhists focus more on ritual, whereas Th. Buddhists focus more on individual enlightenment.

Buddhism...more what you'd call "guidelines."

Which would not explain the Bodhisattvas, their myriad spiritual acolytes, the different Buddhas, the protectors of the faith and Dharma, the protectors of the compass points the Lohans, several protectors of concepts (like money and love).

It's not fundamental to the philosophy, but calling Buddhist an atheist religion when most Buddhists aren't, is a great oversimplification.

Well, to be truly semantic, Buddhism is not really a philosphy or a religion as much as a Way.

you don't technically have to kill the entire organism to eat plants, but you do to eat meat.

Well, not necessarily, but we just don't go there, right?

If we remove both animal and vegetable, we are left only with synthetics and by-products (like milk).

But milk is rape! And synthetics...uh...synthetics are...
wont nobody think of the little synthetics?!

Synthetics. They're like cloning, in a way.

I wanted to scream, "Will someone think of the innocent water molecules?" >3

But the problem with that would be that I'd be taken seriously.

"It's rather unpleasantly like being drunk."
"What's so unpleasant about being drunk?"
"You ask a glass of water."

Don't have an account, I just HAD to say that.

The problem isn't so much the water molecules, but the fact that processing the water to make it safe for drinking kills the organisms within it.

And think of how teeth-brushing must feel for the cute little guys living on your teeth.
I think there are even experiments that prove how they thrive and prosper better without brushing, so there is really no excuse.

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.
