Won't Customers_Suck think of the children?!
not_hothead_yet posts to customers_suck re. the lamentable tendencies of some people in the community to call children 'sprogs' or other such disrespectful names.

If you've got a bratty kid, talk about the bratty kid but knock it off with the automatic description of ALL kids as "sprogs" or "crotch droppings" or whatever; it's just too trashy.

Hilarity ensues.

Her S.O. wades gleefully into the fray with insults all 'round! The amusing images are busted out!

Hoo boy.

I agree with her about "crotch droppings". I mean, I don't like dogs, but I don't go around referring to the species as "ambulatory turds" and then acting like dog-owners have no right to get annoyed.

But I don't get what's offensive about sprog, unless it sekritly means "ambulatory turd" in Hottentot or something. Besides, it's fun to say. Sprrrrrrog!

The distinction I agree with is something along the lines of "crotch droppings"=bratty indulged kids, "children"=decent kids. Same thing with "breeders"/"parents". It's like how I don't refer to all girls as bimbos, and if I make a general bimbo-reference, I'm talking about a certain type of girl.

Lol. Ageism always bugged the hell out me, whether I was being the target or not. (Actually, even now I get ageism all the time, being that I look young.)

But, it's "cool" to insult some catagories of people, and horrible to insult others! Logic is fun on teh internets. ^^;

How is it 'ageism' to not want a kid screaming in a theater or at a nice restaurant or raising hell in the place you work?

And yes, I'm sorry, call me an ageist bitch if you must but I sincerely believe the world should NOT be run by children, especially spoiled, ill-mannered children.

Damn, I hate when I can see both sides. It prevents me from getting my righteous rage on, and I get annoyed at both sides. I really hate the term 'crotch droppings' and such. I think they sound moronic, not to mention it gives rather disgusting imagery.

BUT, it's *hardly* comparable to a racial slur. I am getting tired of any time someone uses an insult that would only apply to certain people, someone brings up 'well, would you say this about such-and-such group?' What does that have to do with anything?

I don't have children and I don't plan on having any and despite my "childfree" status, I still find such terms derogatory and ignorant.

Children are at that age where they're still developing. It's trial and error and unfortunately some parents just don't stress the error part. So we keep seeing children that simply aren't adjusted enough to be seen in public. It's terrible, but true. Or course, that doesn't mean that you should group every child everywhere into one big group and call them nasty names. Didn't their parents teach them that when they were mere "crotch droppings" themselves?

Sidestepping from the being adjusted enough-angle; I get the feeling some CF people moaning about the "ill-behaving" kids would do well to read up a bit on cognitive development and using a little common sense.

It's not like children suddenly reach a certain age and will never throw a tantrum in the supermarket or start talking loudly during a sermon. A parent must, and are sometimes forced by circumstances to take their children to places where such happenings are possible, if not even probable. It's called learning, and most of us adults screw up the first time, too.

Big word on that grouping thing. Stereotypes are bad, mmkay.

I think it's rather silly to rant about calling them derogatory names there considering any children posted about in the community are usually the kids that are hellish little brats that DESERVE such terms. And the ones that aren't...don't get called names.

The OP asks that people not refer to all children in various insultive manners.

But, I think the number of people who're referring to all children that way are few and far between. I agree that calling an irritating child something like "crotch-dropping" is the equivilent of calling a terrible customer and "asshat".

Why is it OK to insult adults and not children? What makes children so special? It IS possible for them to behaive. I HAVE SEEN IT! (explaining to me that some kids have disabilities is splitting hairs, thank you)

Such names cannot be linked to racial slurs: "Crotch-dropping" is not aimed at one race, one creed, one gender - not even one age. Children come in a wide variety of flavors ages and races and religions and heights and weights and an assortment of other things.

It's a wonder more insults haven't been devised!

I think my irritation with the word "crotch dropping" mostly has to do with the fact that I associate it with the sort of childfree asshat who seems to think that, because he doesn't have children, he's somehow entitled to live in a world where children are entirely absent. Yeah, sure, a kid screaming in the supermarket is annoying. What are parents supposed to do, start self-sufficient organic farms in the home so that they never have to leave the house for a public place where a childfree person might potentially be exposed to their offspring?

Also, yeah, the imagery is just distasteful. It's like fangirls screaming about how they want to "rape" Legolas. I'm not horribly offended by it, but the imagery is unpleasant and it makes the person sound immature and uneducated. It's just bad writing, IMO.
