	That was my thought. We have semi-socialised dentistry which means you can get braces for free when you're a kid. We just don't ... think there's much need for cosmetic dentistry. Teeth are FUNCTIONAL, man, not decorative. shakes head (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

I had my wisdom teeth out. They were all impacted, so the dentist person had to detonate them before they would come out.

Fortunately I was under general anesthesia when this happened. Unfortunately, I don't come out of general anesthesia very well, so I scared the bejezus out of the people in the hallways. I was staggering about, grunting with my jaw hanging down. People actually ran away from me. It was fun.

My parents had their tonsils out as kids. No reason, just "It's the fifties and we're all on crack, so we're going to take your tonsils out because otherwise the communists win." They also had a) lousy toothpaste and b) non-fluoridated water, so their back teeth look a change maker.

On the other hand, my dad still has his "Polio Pioneer" card, so not everything perpetrated on them was bad.

I had retainers because I had an overbite. The dentist wanted me to get braces, but I told them I liked eating things way too much, kthxby. My overbite didn't effect the way I ate at all, just how my teeth looked. Whereas, my wisdom teeth had to come out because they were trying to grown in sideways and knock all of my teeth out of alignment. That would have been a problem.

I remember wearing a retainer. I must have it thrown away a dozen times by accident, and then have to dig through the garbage to find it. Aah, those were the good old days.

o_O I really don't see why the OP required wank. It seemed perfectly civil to me. Uninformed, maybe, but it seemed like she was just trying to get answers. Yeah, it's a stereotype, but she was acting if the stereotype was true. In other words, ya know, moving beyond stereotypes.

And on the topic of teeth. I hate mine. They are crooked like hell refuse to stay where they belong in my jaw. Pretty soon I'm gonna have teeth going sideways. I am very tempted to simply have them all taken out suck liquid foods from a straw for the rest of my life. (Thus proving that Americans really do have bad teeth too.)

I had the whole works as years ago: retainer, head-gear, braces, wisdom teeth removed, cosmetic whitening. I think my parents unconsciously passed on their dental insecurities to me, because I constantly obsess over how imperfect my teeth are. I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from putting braces and such on my kids either.

Sometimes its best to just leave things be.

that's the one that always unnerved me. Teeth are meant to be off-white/yellow. It's the colour enamel is.

Ever see that George Clooney film where he's a divorce lawyer? And he gets his teeth bleached? And then his teeth are terrifying and I keep thinking he's going to jump through the screen and gnaw upon my living flesh?

[whistles innocently] On the topic of teeth, I wish I could say I had a Crest smile and how dare those Brits waste such good teeth!

But I can't. My smile scares small children. The teeth are yellow from tea drinking, my three wisdom teeth are all impacted, I have a mouth infection, and there's a chunk missing from one of my molars. My last dentist was a brave, if expensive costing soul.

Can I have some of that socialized medicine? Please? I can only chew with one side of my mouth.

I know it starts off with a nice British stereotype, but really, the Americans have to stick their fat noses into everything.

i believe 65% of Americans are overweight/obese as a matter of fact, and i know most Americans are lazy. i must say that i am an exception to both of these rules because i was blessed with a high metabolism and i have a type A personality, but that stereotype is basically factual.

let me just clarify...i'm upset about americans that basically choose to be overweight...it disgusts me.

See, this is why I am not obsessed with my weight. This chick obsesses for me.

And, I really get off on offending people without actually doing anything. It really appeals to my laziness.
