And piggybacking on the last racial/ethnic/nationality wank...

In the snopes.com syndicated feed, Serena Williams announces that white men are the only successful dating option for black women. (Except no, she didn't say that, and that's why we have Snopes.)

tomoro takes exception to the use of the word "race" and seems to conflate it with the meaning of "species." Then the cliches start. The dictionary, John Lennon, and Martians are evoked.

It's a bit of a baby wank, but it has potential.

On Oprah not dating outside her race, isn't Stedman white? I'm so confused.

Holy Crap!

In the picture on Snopes.com, Serena's leg looks bigger than my waist. That girl could snap me in two! I'd always known they were incredible, but haven't seen pictures lately.

I dunno about "race" being purely socially constructed...it's helpful for physically picking out a blind date. Think of the movie dialogues:

Jules: "What does Marcellus Wallace look like?"
Brett: "He...he's human...."

Nah, doesn't work. Sorry, I don't think "social construct" means everything glomobius thinks it means. Though it was the cool buzzphrase of the 80's and 90's.

People who are all "There's no difference between races! NONE!" always seem to me to be forgetting that culture is a large part of race/ethnic background. Just because I don't think, say, my muslim friends are "less" than me or whatever doesn't mean I have to suddenly ignore the fact that our childhoods and families are quite different in a lot of ways. I mean, that's one of the best things about a diverse circle of friends, is all the different vieuwpoints and cultures!

And I'm dangerously close to wanking now so I'll shut up.

"doesn't mean I have to suddenly ignore the fact that our childhoods and families are quite different in a lot of ways"

*nod* And even people within the same culture can have different experiences, even more different than between cultures. To use your example, Dutch-born Muslims will have different experiences than Turkish-born Muslims.

As far as cultural markers, I distinguish between useful and not useful now rather than superior and inferior. I'd wank if I talk about it more.

*nodnod* If nothing else, if being "open-minded" requires me to ignore the fact that my friends, unlike me, fast during Ramadam, then I don't want to be open-minded, really. I'd feel terrible if I was required to ignore the fact that they're not eating all day, rather than, you know, being considerate and not eating in front of them for that month.

Whenever people ask me to describe someone, I just say, "He's white. Glasses, brown hair, white guy." And then they look confused. And then I giggle.

Human construct? So the different races in dogs are what, canine constructs?

*ROFLMAO*

Different dog breeds are human inventions (since we controlled their breeding population in such a way as to get specific types of dog). Dogs really don't care; a Golden Retriever doesn't care whether or not he's sniffing the butt of another Golden or a St. Bernard. >3

The downside to human intelligence is that we give a rip about what other people look like, who they sleep with, what they like to do on a Saturday night, etc., and make stupid judgements about all of that.

Was that wanky?
