Mini autism wank
my first post here--please delete if inappropriate.

Someone [info]metaquotes a journal entry (by an autistic person) that features the line “We don't need the skills it takes to be "normal"; we need the skills it takes to be different.” Parents of autistic children, and at least one other autistic person, weigh in. Debates develop on such subjects as “how do you know how high functioning the person is?” and whether or not they should let their children run into the road. The wankiness arises from what I suspect must be deliberate attempts to misunderstand each other, since some of the people fighting seem to be on the same side of the argument.

The only reason to let your kids run into the road is if you want them to die. Sheesh!

Remember the people I mentioned before who consider Aspies to be a different species than NTs? They also are adamant against all cures for autism.

Now, while I would be strongly opposed to any attempt to cure Asperger's, what about help for all those kids who can't speak or read or whatever due to their autism? I think those kids are being ignored.

People like my mother and many of her colleagues are doing their damnedest to make sure they're not forgotten, and left behind, BJR.
And also that it's remembered that those kids are human beings too.

Hope that helps to brighten your day.

Nothing brings the wank like autism. I await the day when autistics and those around them get together to wank about Anne Rice, Harry Potter, and Domlijah while Crystal chronicles it all in a series of original charcoal drawings. It will hail the end of the world as a wave of spooge descends over the planet.

Next thing you know, she'll be telling the mother her kids are autistic because she didn't breastfeed them through graduate school long enough.

But FOR FUCK'S SAKE, kids, you may NOT self-diagnose with it just because you've the personality of a squid. That make you an arsehole, not Aspie.

All the stuff about training? EVERY kid (hopefully) is "trained". I was trained, I train the kids I babysit. What's the big deal?

And another thing, could someone tell this ignorant NT what the hell "stim" is?

Ok, I just read the whole thread and I don't see the wank. I see parents and autistics trying to communicate with each other about what their respective needs are (and doing it badly, but that's how people are.) I think that moggy-whatsit actually makes really good points about how, contrary to popular perception, autistics actually ARE trying to communicate, but not succeeding. A bit idealistic of her to think that people will go out of their way to learn a new language but... OTOH, if I had a deaf kid, I'd do my level best to learn sign language. And I'm sure the parents ARE doing their level best. But the myth that autistics 'don't communicate' is a pervasive one.
