She's one of THEM!
This is the week for [info]ohnotheydidnt wank. This time, the spooge arises from a comment posted in response to a picture of Michelle Branch, and I quote: "She looks like a typical Chink. :x" Of course, accusations of racism fly immediately. But wait! Apparently [info]__snobby_cici is one, and thus can do whatever she wants! Enjoy the assumption that all the cool kids do it, so it's not offensive (not to mention the fun idea that Central and Southern Asians do not exist), the insults based on age and appearance, and the total inability of the OP to comprehend that racist epithets are occasionally considered offensive, even if you "are one".

Would it be wrong to go and point out that, in England, asian means Indian, Kasmiri, Pakistani or Bangladeshi? Yes, yes it would, because it's completely beside the point. ::restrains self::

I am staggered by the stoopid of the woman asking why Jap is offensive because it just means Japanese. Erm, take a look at pretty much all racist epithets. See the theme.

Asian != Chinese. Sheesh, my parents and nearly all of my extended family would be surprised that "all Asians" refer to themselves as "Chinks". While I do get mistaken for a Chinese occasionally, I'm not Chinese -- and even if I was, I wouldn't refer to myself as "Chink" any more than I would call a black person a "nigger". BECAUSE IT IS OFFENSIVE.

(And no, I don't call white people "angmoh", either. *g*)

There's a difference between using a racist epithet among close friends, and using it in public among a bunch of relative strangers. And apparently the person isn't even Chinese (the group usually associated with "chink"), so I don't have to call up a mob to run s/h/it out of my ethnic group.

The OP does realize that the rest of LJ can't actually see her when she's commenting on something. Maybe 5% of the people who have read that comment knew her in any way before, and most of them will have very strong reactions when somebody casually posts an ethnic slur. Some critical thinking, please.

I agree with ymfaery, even if you jokingly use it with your friends... that doesn't mean you have free reign to use words like that in public.

I remember it happening in a forum when someone used the word "jap" and my Korean friend got a little offended because she had been tormented with that word (because most bigots know the difference, right?) and politely asked the poster not to use that. The OP responded by laughing hysterically (HAHAHAHA u don't no but I'm Japanese! my firends call me jap allthe time!! ha ha ha ha! it's not racizt! u don't no cuz ur not azn). --; Not much wank occurred, though.

Because over the internet, is everyone white until revealed otherwise?! Is there a Law for that?

Words can mean different things to different people. Sometimes what is a joke between you and your friends is a very sore subject for someone who has been at the receiving end of bigotry before. *shrug*

The wank _explosion_ from this is amusing though!

I was sooooo tempted to post this there, but I'll post it here instead:

Ironic, considering Michelle Branch is part Indonesian.

Not all Asians are of East Asian (Japanese/Chinese/Korean) descent. Indonesia, for example, (where part of Michelle Branch's bloodline comes from) is in South East Asia. there's a difference.

No one who is actually FROM Asia will ever call themselves a Chink. They'd kill you for that.

I'm Asian. Bangladeshi, born+brought up+living in Malaysia. I do have Chinese blood somewhere in my lineage. And I've already gone through enough racial slurs to smack someone who uses them upside the head.
