Homophobia in Singapore
Over in sg_ljers, a community for LJers in Singapore, gssq posted a letter that ran in the Forum of the Nation Building press. It positively reeked of homophobia. He also included a parody of it because homosexuals are like Muslims in a way. definitiv, unofficial spokesperson for the Moral Majority, states his views.

All hell breaks loose.

Potential human underpopulation is a legitimate excuse for homophobia?

If you have brains made of DOG FOOD perhaps.

Besides, cockroaches are going rule the earth in a couple of decades anyway. Miss Cleo told me so.

There's an underpopulation problem? Did I miss a memo? Cos, last time I checked, the population was growing close to exponentially with no sign of carrying capacity being reached.

I'll be over here, in the real world. Pop: 6 billion.

There's an underpopulation problem?

Of course there is! We have to encourage the majority race to have children (while discouraging those undesirable minorities from breeding like bunnies).

Sad thing is, I'm not joking. This so called "underpopulation problem" is considered to be an epidemic in some areas, but what it boils down to is that the upper class (read: rich, educated Chinese) are having fewer children, while the lower class (read: poor Muslims who have less chances at getting a good education) are having "too many" children.

It's not confined to Singapore, or even Southeast Asia. Similar arguments have been made in North America, Britain, etc.

Yeah, and we can't do anything like make sure that everyone have opportunities to get an education, or pervent job discrimination or look for ways to increase funding for small business, now can we?

(We have that sort of shitty sentiment in the US too, though not so loudly expressed, so, making fun of my own land too)

Blasphemy! The only way to control this growing epidemic is by eating babies! I mean... Eugenics! Er, I mean "Family Planning". Yes. We must all work together to make sure that the families have just the right amount of children (and we can eat the extras). Man, I should be running my own country.

Not proud of it, though.

Me neither.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to those young naive days of childhood where I actually believed that America was the land of equal opportunity for all. But there's just something unpleasant about the thought of bludgeoning my head repeatedly in order to achieve that thoughtless bliss.

Oh, wow. I can't stop reading this. I figure I should, cos he surely isn't.

3)promiscuity is wrong in so many ways. if you think either that or polygamy is ok, i have no respect for you. i'm alright with sex outside of marriage, if that's what you're saying. but frequent changing of sex partners is seriously f***ed-up. if you think there's nothing wrong with that, i don't really want to talk to you.

4) what was i ever going to smash. it is a known fact that intolerance is often a person's best defence of their inertia. their refusal to learn. i'm saying that homosexuals or pro-choice people should not be antagonistic or overly showy in the process of re-education. the black sheep shouldn't project a swinger kind of lifestyle because even if it were heterosexual it'd be frowned upon.

Or this, this has to be the most poorly thought out argument ever (although props for capitalising Liberal--the only capital letter in the whole post):

4) i make pretty accurate analogies. it's just an excuse for a swinger lifestyle. inter-racial couples face discrimination too. do you see them resorting to flings? you're a Liberal extremist, so on this topic i shall concede since i can't be bothered with your hedonistic stand anyway.

What the shit is this? Hold me?

Ah... yes. In my high school, my gay friend was the one who had a three-year relationship with no cheating going on. I also knew a couple of straight female girls who talked about nothing but how they cheated on their boyfriends and had a new one every week. You can't judge an entire group of people based on your prejudices.

And honestly, I think it would be nice if there were more gay couples walking around holding hands and being affectionate. It might teach kids some tolerance.

No? But then, what can I judge them on? Wait, you mean I shouldn't lump all people into one group automatically? What's this earth logic you speak of? I fail to understand!

I like this part:

Given the alarming Aids epidemic Singapore is facing, any event which would threaten to aggravate this problem and endanger the public health cannot be allowed.

Because now 'party' is a codeword for 'orgy' in the Ghei underworld of Singapore!!1!one! :O

Nevermind the fact that there are more straight female AIDS victims than gay male ones, but we won't discuss that. They're not important enough.

Word. There's a girl I know who believes that anal sex is wrong because it causes men to get AIDs, which causes them to go to the hospital, which causes us all to have to PAY MORE TAXES. So, what, should we ban het sex as well?

Oh, and she's a *lesbian,* which only makes this that much more horrifying.

kissing in front of a 10 years old (underaged) or a 70 year old (overaged) with a member of the same sex is most likely to be frowned upon. both haven't got the educational standards to appreciate this kind of lifestyle.

I'm sorry, what? My eighty plus year old grandparents with about six university degrees between them 'haven't got the educational standards to appreciate this kind of lifestyle'?

Excuse me? What spaceship did you fall off?

And the other side: My two grader shouldn't see a gay couple kiss? When I've explained to her what homosexuality is years ago and she didn't bat an eyelid! She's slashed anime characters on her own! She once explained to me how "maybe I'll live with a girl when I grow up, or maybe with a boy, it might be fun too"!

Don't start telling me that kids automatically resent homosexuality, dear Capital Letter Challenged Wanker; that happens only if they're taught to do so.

I love how they always make it about some kid's innocence being shattered by the inherent wrongness of a gay kiss. Kids aren't going to think a gay kiss is wrong unless somebody has told them so.

And if they don't start seeing more same sex kisses, it's likely that they'll never get the standards.

The way to learn about different lifestyles is not to pretend they don't exist.

Supposing this was about learning to live with different lifestyles to begin with.

As Straits Times Senior Writer Andy Ho noted recently: 'It is homosexuals who engaged in condomless anopenetrative sex that are culpable of spreading HIV in Singapore', causing the 'second wave of HIV here and worldwide'.

Yeeeaaaahhhh, and cats were responsible for the Black Death don'tcha know. Those damned creatures of Satan are to blame! It couldn't possibly be because of the lack of education on particular subjects, 'cause humans are soooo SMRT! ¬_¬

Good god, the reason there is an epidemic in the first place is because of people like that.

That would mean someone would have to actually touch it him. Ew.

I say we dose him with alien sex pollen, tie him up, and throw him in a deep, dark dungeon.

His screams for blowjobs mercy would be most beneficial to the public.
