A tsunami hits Southeast Asia and all they make are lousy t-shirts
Small, nothing explosive, but still a wanky subject...

Flemco at livejournal makes t-shirts poking fun at the recent Southeast Asian tsunami. Some find it funny, some don't: http://www.livejournal.com/users/flemco/787430.html

I know, I know. I'm not really saying it's funny, just pointing out random English rules.

Supposed it was one of those 'get your jollies in whenever you can' sorts of situations. I see the reason for it, but not the point.

I'm sorry, but since my friend's family home in Thailand was destroyed, and it took him (who is in the US) 2 days, during which we all dreaded the worse, to get in touch with his family to make sure they are all okay. I fail to see the funniness in the T-shirts.

Now can I go and make T-shirts with cartoon about how funny it's to see planes crashing into tall buildings? 'Coz, ya know, it's quite hilarious, LOLZ, I know people died there and all, but why let a few thousand deaths stop you from seeing the joke when over a hundred thousand didn't? *shrug*

- from the lazy arse who didn't bother to get a journalfen account and is too cowardly to post her email.

I think that's been done. And here in South Korea there are amusing (to some) TV ads about 9/11 too.

:) I've also seen metafiler post a few months ago about a toy made in some Asian country that portray two cute little towers with a cute little plain stuck inside too.
And most the posters (mostly American, I presume, judging from the spellings) were screaming bloody murder about how offensive they found that to be.

It just annoy me to see people turn around and make funny T-shirt about a major natural disaster (hence, totally unpredictable and is really nobody's fault) that occurred far far away from U.S. and then everybody say "OMG That's so great! I want one!"

> portrayed two cute little towers with a cute little plane stuck inside too.

p.s. that was in 2004, years after the incident, and people were still pissed.
The tsunami occurred less than a week ago, if they must make joke about it, at least give it a few months for the fresh wound to heal, pls.

The people who laugh at the tsunami shirts would prob'ly find the cute airplane+towers combo just as entertaining. It all comes down to the type of folk, really, not nationality.

Myself? After seeing what hurricanes have done to Haiti and worrying about the personal connections and investments I have there (girl's orphanage), I myself find no humor. But I can understand those who do. This is the same community, after all, which ogles Hermione's arse and demands student discounts on the one-way train to hell. (Guilty of both - got my student id on hand yo)

I wonder if I'm just not looking close enough, all I see are shirts. I mean, I see the wank! I just don't understand why its so offensive.

Though, I'm one of those people who would covet a "If You Ride Alone, You Ride with Hitler!" poster and show it to all my guests with pride. Hmn.

I kinda think that the "If You Ride Alone, You Ride with Hitler!" poster is using a different sort of humor than the tsumani t-shirts. Outrageous statements used to change behavior vs. picking on a still fresh wound via t-shirts (or mocking people's sudden concern for nations that regularly have starvation and fighting as daily constants, but coming off badly).

That said, I giggled at those graphs of hurricanes hitting Florida counties that voted for Bush. I'm a hypocrite.
