Speaking as a Real Pagan (tm), this wank is truly deeeelicious, not to say fattening.

You Can't Understand My Deep PAIN. And pro-ana is REALLY GOOD. And it's a good thing. And it's good. And they help people get into rehab, which would be the absolute opposite of a pro-disorder community. And apparently, I am beaming most of this message in from Backwards Land. Whee!

And your opinion doesn't count because you didn't have an eating disorder long enough. I am not making this up.

Followed up by "getting people help is attacking them, which is bad, so you should tell them to go even further into their disease. Because that's good. Because it's what they want, and you should always listen to the wants of a person struggling with a self-destructive illness. Especially when they'll destroy themselves more!!" Not making this up either.

I want to yell "PLEASE, get about the business of killing yourselves! I can't take this onslaught of Stupid!" - but I know they're sick, and I know they need medical/psychiatric help. It's just so fucking frustrating when they're proud of their disease. You don't get this with physical diseases. People are idiots.

Yes, they are. I've got my own issues, but I don't whip 'em out like I'm searching for validation that I am/am not fucked up. (and hey, I'll be the first one to tell anybody that I need a nice stay in the psych ward sometimes.)

If you don't have an eating disorder, you don't understand. You can't begin to understand the loneliness or isolation, nor can you understand the importance of these communities.

Goodness no. Nobody has the ability to empathise with or relate to another person unless they have had exactly the same life. This is why we humans have no society, or language.

For fuck's sake.

Welllll, aheh... I did say recently that I refuse to say "I know exactly how you feel" to anyone unless I've been in their situation... but I don't think it's necessarily a case of empathy in this case. The feelings/thoughts being advanced here aren't healthy; we shouldn't, really, be adopting them as our own.

Indeed.

I am just really annoyed by that whole concept, to be honest. Even if we, for example, had experienced something similar in name, fundamentally the experience would not be the same because we are different people. Things that I find really hard may seem foolish to you; things that you find challenging may barely register with me. I don't know how anyone else feels. They can only tell me.

And because I am annoyed by the refrain: You can't understand because you haven't been through it, I tend to respond with: You have no concept of what I can understand because you are not me.

But that is just bickering and not helpful.

/wank

?? People are defending this, and using all sorts of religious wisdom to justify why it's okay for these girls to starve themselves to death. (Although I can't remove the bone in my head that pings when I see people doing things that I *know* are stupid and I just boggle all over the place)

But randomly, doesn't that three fold rule apply to self harm? I know that not all pagans believe that, but... I dunno. Something my psudo!junkie sister never grasped and she believed in the three fold rule *and* that it applied to self harm. I guess self destrucitive people are just self destructive. Charles Darwin at work.

Well, that's kinda what I was thinking, like, basically by the time your God/Goddess was done with you, you'd be so much hamburger meat. So maybe it doesn't make sense, but sometimes I'd really like it to.

To be fair though, not one of theose anorexics is in any danger of starving to death. Most of them are heavier (and shorter) than I am and I am of normal weight.

I went to school with some anas, a hospital school, and they weren't like these girls.

Oh, er, there are a couple of thin thin girls further back, skip=60 or so. I retract my statement. 60 pounds *is* about-to-die thin. Many of them have perfectly reasonable goal weights, though: 130 pounds etc. I don't understand how they can be not reaching it if they are starving themselves. Hm. Weird.

I don't understand how they can be not reaching it if they are starving themselves.

Because continually eating significantly less than your body needs can slow down and fuck up your metabolism majorly. 'Tis why starvation/extremely-low calorie dieting never works long term...your body just adapts and clings to whatever nutrients you do give it and hoards 'em.

Now, that's not to say if you're living on Crystal Light and celery sticks alone, you're not going to become a walking skeleton soon enough...but folks eating less than 1000 calories a day, say, for extended periods of time, are only going to long-term fuck up their chances of losing weight in a healthy way.

Least, that's my understanding of things...

Oh yeah, famine-mech. D'oh. I suppose if you're eating bits and bobs that would work. And cut down on the explosive mucal diarrhea (sp?), which can be a bit of a drag.

I happened upon some ana communities a while back. I was pretty horrified, I have to admit, but I am confused by the connection between a behavioural disorder and a religion: as in, why one cannot be both non-onaist and have some sort of body-dysmorphia issue.

Meh, this whole thing makes no sense to me. But me likey that maewitch woman.

It's a weird commuinty. This community is PRO ED, This community is not intended as a site to promote eating disorders or encourage them. and Nothing tastes as good as THIN feels are all on the unserinfo. Contradict yourself much? And heavy or not, it seems like it's super hip to be able to find yourself in the DSM...

It's very strange, isn't it? But not altogether surprising--mental illness/behavioural disorders affect a large proportion of people at some point in their lives. I don't know the statistics+citation and I refuse to make one up.

I am mentally ill myself, and I make no bones about it, but it's not my favourite part about myself by a long way. But then, I've never suffered from depression and have normal self-harm behaviours (hair pulling, nail biting, scab-picking). But you can't find me in the DSM. Because I am teh speshul! ::dances::

That's what I say. I'm on a medically supervised diet, and I've lost a goodly amount of weight, but thin isn't nearly as satisfying as penne alla vodka with a big basket of garlic bread.

There are many days when I look at my high protein sugar free soy-based "chocolate" shake product and sigh.
