Metafilter wankoraaaaama!
(ETA: as plazmah pointed out: Wah, bahleeted! *salutes, plays Reveille*
Edit #2: Behold, a saved version! Yey pink_rhombus.)

On MetaTalk:

One user posts an open apology to another for using the term 'drama queen.' Apparently it's homophobic. 800+ comments ensue and glorious is its spoogingness.

The aggrieved user commences to the bitchy bitchy. Allegations of spamming are made. Attempts at reasoned comment range from cutely snarkalicious to outright bitcheroo! Then the pictures start, and the marquees, and soon the PervyDuck is invoked.

Ah, Metafilter. Someone else does the job wanksummarising much better than I can.

I think it might be best if we all just let this drop.

Yeah. That always happens in MetaTalk.

Is it just me or has MeFi been extra-wanky with a side of wank fries and a McWankPie for dessert lately?

Growing pains from all the new users. It will settle out. Or Matt will delete it as a lesson to everyone and Mefi will fall into a pit of wank like none have seen before. Oh wait, they have. Phfft. It will settle out.

I thought you meant "hysteria, ho!" as in "ho for the open spaces," which actually works pretty well, too.

Can someone tell me when homosexuality became a race? Because last I checked, homophobia =/= racism, and yet I keep seeing people refer to it that way. Like, over and over and OVER and OVER and...

They keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means.

I've seen it used for sexism and -- anti-Americanism, I guess, as well. Race =/= nationality, dumbasses. The word you want is "prejudice". I suppose that's too hard for them to spell.

Well, actually, you *could* call anti-Americanism a form of racism--race gets broadly defined. In www.m-w.com, you get:

2 a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b : a class or kind of people unified by community of interests, habits, or characteristics

In the US, people pretty much define race by skin color, but that's not true in a lot of the world, and especially in those places it makes sense to call a form of nationality-based prejudice "racism" when the prejudice treats the whole nationality as a group.

That's what I'd like to know too. I personally have equated homosexuality with something like Judaism: There's several ways you can be a Jew, and some of them (your mom is Jewish but you attend church) are apparently contradictory (like you're married but you still use the glory holes in the mens' room), and people tend to make you into the Church's scapegoat. My two cents.

I actually think that separating GLBT people into their own little race is homophobic. Think about it: there's normal straight people, and there are those...dregs of society that don't reproduce.

This is lovely. It's got obdurate stupidity, attempts at fair-handed reason, more dumb, some shit-losing, and the requisite amount of confusion. It's readable, it's spirited. It's a sploogefest with style.

I hope they don't take it down, because I've got to get back to work and I'm only halfway through it.

Report of Wank in action:

This is a confusing one. Ginmar (http://livejournal.com/users/ginmar) is taking her journal private because she's in a legal dispute with Cheshyre (http://livejournal.com/users/cheshyre) over copyright.

What happened was this: Ginmar copied (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ginmar/353640.html#cutid1) Cheshyre's husband's post in full in a huge argument they were all having awhile back.

This pisses Cheshyre off. So she copies back (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshyre/29224.html) Ginmar's now friends-locked but formerly public post that upset Xiphias.

Ginmar eventually finds out about this and files a legal DMCA claim through LJ abuse. Uh oh. Apparently this is a Real Lawsuit (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshyre/31406.html?thread=223662#t223662). Wow, if she pursues, we could have some real internet law being made! Meanwhile, Cheshyre removes the copied text and files countersuit under DMCA (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshyre/30945.html#cutid1). This causes Ginmar to friends-lock her journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ginmar/360643.html) because she can't find a lawyer.

Now, it's even more fun now that someone has created a fake journal impersonating Cheshyre. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshyree/) As we can see....it's obvious in revenge for the whole countersuit (http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshyree/2508.html#cutid1).

What shall be the next installment in this drama?

This whole Ginmar thing kinda weirds me out. I remember her from years ago, when we both posted at the Ms Magazine discussion boards (which have since sunk into oblivion beneath a steaming flood of transwank, racismwank, and crazy!egowank) but I never knew she was in fandom. Or Iraq, as it turns out.

How does Ginmar have reliable internet access is what I'm wondering. My old man says she's full of shit, no way a soldier could have such reliable access--but he retired eight years ago.

Of course, technology has changed and I haven't bothered to do all the research involved.

So does anyone know if things have changed that drastically since then?

They're trying to keep the troops' morale up; internet access is part of that. Besides, if you read Ginmar's journal, you'll see the service isn't as reliable as all that.

I can't believe Matt deleted it! It was up to 870-odd comments when I last saw it this afternoon. People on the thread were saying they were keeping copies, but of course I don't remember who. Foo.

It was the biggest clusterfuck I've seen in ages. AlexReynolds was the queeniest drama queen in the history of drama queens. And then jonmc got drunk and made an ass of himself all over the place. Contrary to apparently popular opinion, I think he's usually the biggest ass of them all (although AR beat him this time, barely). When telling AR he was a better writer, he said something to the effect of "Well your a bad writer, anyway". When AR pointed out the grammar error, jonmc responded by pulling out his dick claiming to be the more loved user since more people "link" to him, and some rate him as a muse, damnit!

...can you tell who I don't like on MeFi? Damnit, I like that place but it really has one big steaming pile of shit lately.

If anything is wank-worthy about "drama queen", it's not that it's homophobic. It's misogynist in assuming that only women can be overdramatic...or a wanker with a hell of a lot more sense that Alex would argue. Myself, I just think it's a term like prima donna: somebody that overreacts to everything like a lead in a ballet or a play.

Get some common sense, Alex. You're making my sexuality look stupid.

The December 27th thread that led to the apology confuses me more than the apology itself. Particularly this quote from AR:

. . . but when you insult a gay man with an insult reserved for gay people, there's apparently no inconsistency to you or anyone else.

Huh? Aside from the fact that I don't believe the term "drama queen" has anything to do with sexuality, there's something about the "reserved for gay people" part that seriously disturbs me. So he's okay with being called a drama queen as long as there are gay credentials flashed immediately thereafter?

Of course, I've heard arguments like this regarding racism and the n-word. Personally, I'd feel like decking someone who called me that, regardless of the source.
