Sociology Wank (aka You Have No Life! Well, You Have Less of One!)
In the blogsociology community on LJ, rance links to a Salon article on LJ's acquisition by SixApart, saying the article is well-balanced and doesn't rag on LJ users.

Coalescent thinks that calling LJ users "freaks, geeks and queers" who need a "safety net" qualifies as ragging on LJ users. After a little back and forth, it dissolves into arguing over who needs lives and how much of your human interaction should be on the internet to be healthy. People are declared to need mental help by Sahara_Dreams (who has a Ghost World icon, and therefore really shouldn't be talking about people who need lives) in bold letters of righteousness. Juliann is disabled and wants Sahara_Dreams to take a nice cup of STFU. Siderea, a grad student in psychology, tells Sahara that she's projecting her issues onto others.

And no doubt someone will post later with some sociological observation from this arguement.

And OMG, the "I don't normally diagnose people online, but here is my OMG I R A GRADUATE STUDENT diagnosis of you based on your comments" bit is hysterical.

Funny that Sahara_Dreams has issues with online interaction, given that she must be online constantly to produce those long, sentence-fragment studded rants of hers.

Something about that girl rubs me completely the wrong way and I can't even quite put my finger on what. I think it's her superior attitude.

I also spend a lot of time online, though, so I think I took it personally. I don't like it when people tell me to get help. It makes me twitch. Probably because I'm afraid that if I ever actually saw a psychiatrist, she/he would have me locked up. Or at least heavily medicated.

Most of the people on Live Journal can't function in real life. That has been evidenced here in this very community where others have claimed that all of their friends are friends online.

Ah. So now a couple of posters on [info]blog_sociology=Most of the people on Live Journal. Either that means that only about 3 people use Live Journal, or that community is waypopular.

Have you read many journals here? Most of these people cannot function. They can't even spell, for crying out loud.

Normally I prefer to read journals that are spelt correctly too. However, for all my inner grammar-nazidom, I think equating bad spelling with inability to function might be going a leetle bit far.

Ahhh, I love this wank. Having no friends in real life or having friends online must mean you're not socially capable.

Not spelling well != can not function. Most people I know of are just too damn lazy to go around and spell each and every word.

I never saw the problem of not having friends in "real life." My personal experience has been "Dude, Eclair. These people are whack. You're in the agegroup where people do stupid things. Stay inside and be friends with books, mmkay?" or... you know, not living in one place more than six months kind of kills the friendometer. (Though I must say, living on a tropical island and then travelling to a snowing state? Most interesting experience ever for me. Here I thought AIR CONDITIONING was cold.)

Oh, wait. Talk about the wank. Wooh, wank!

How can this person claim she can talk blog sociology and equate spelling skills with social skills? That's like saying that "most lj users cannot have a satisfying sexual life. They can't even do maths, for crying out loud." Unless you're the kind of poser whose brain has been addled by pretended snobbery that you seriously think making a typo means you're a completely worthless individual and how can bad spellers possibly not feel the same way and be drowing in self-hate as we speak?

It's like she's going for cheap shots, and not understanding how that invalidates her argument completely.

Well, my therapist says that, despite the limitations imposed by communication over the internet, online friendships can fulfill all the emotional requirements of "real life" friendships and should not be regarded as somehow less valid.

She also says I should stop stabbing stupid people with forks, though, so I'm not sure I trust her judgment.

My therapist probably wouldn't agree, but that just shows you that therapists aren't all the same--especially in their attitudes towards new technology. I don't agree with my therapist, though.

And sahara_dreams obviously doesn't understand what "rural" can mean. It doesn't mean a quaint little town; it can mean living in the middle of the woods, with your nearest neighbor over a mile away. Even if I could walk to my neighbors' trailers houses for a chat, I don't have anything in common with them. They're all either old farts or assholes.

Since I'm chronically ill and stuck at home a lot, sometimes the only interaction I can get (other than with my family) is through the internet. Sad? Yes. Frustrating? Yes, since I do like going out with friends and it's hard to maintain relationships when I don't see people often. My fault? No.

Oh, God. And [info]sahara_dreams was the one who threw a shitfit when she was rejected from The Inkslingers. Methinks the lady who submitted her fucking journal entries to a creative writing community is also blurring the lines between real life and LiveJournal/creativity.

What a little bitch. A therapist in training? LOL. WTF? What the hell do you call a psychotherapy graduate student? She may have a valid point, but the pretentiousness she expels as easily as she breathes keeps me from paying attention.

Am very impressed with [info]siderea's composure. Somebody buy that lady a drink!

I submitted my journal to a rating community sahara_dreams rates folks at. I did about as well as I expected, although I was a little confused when she told me not to post fanfiction. I didn't get that - did she mean "don't write fanfiction", or "it's okay if you write it as long as you do it in a tiny dark closet with a padlocked door, using invisible ink and a secret cryptic alphabet, and when your family knocks on the door you lie and say you're masturbating counterfeiting money in there"?

[sociology wank]
I find it most interesting that a bunch of people purporting to be interested in "blog sociology" have apparently no concept of social theory beyond the basic terms taught in intro courses (e.g. subculture). Hey, folks, the discipline actually has ways of looking at these things -- we don't just pull our best guesses out of our collective ass.

Did you ever see a British series called "The Long Firm"? In it, a gangster (by now in prison) is fanboyed by a sociology professor. Said gangster decides to take some papers himself. Later, Prof brings a paper for his idol subject to have a look at. Subject responds with "I can't believe you've completely discounted Foucault."

"I can't believe you've completely discounted Foucault" is my number one response to all and every sociology wank evar.

(I am not a sociologist but I sleep with one)

I have a mild type of social anxiety. I'm terrified of talking to new people, or even talking to people I know already. I do have a few friends, but for the most part I'm scared of social situations. I know this is a problem, and I'm slowly forcing myself to be around people more and more. But in the meantime, why can't I make friends over the internet? I feel more accepted on message boards than I've ever felt offline. Isn't it good that I have some social contact, and am getting myself used to interacting?

But no, it only counts as interacting with people when you can see them! Silly me. I guess I'll just hop out to the next party I find, then, where I shall either shriek and hide in the kitchen or begin stabbing people with toasting forks.

Hey guys, did you hear about the tsunami in South East Asia? Well I have. About 5,362,984 times. It's bad enough that it's taking up half of the news hour, but, come on guys, does everyone on Live Journal have to cover it, too?
