paulmcg: I hate skool! Tell me I can make money animating without college! ENABLE ME, YOU SELFISH HAGS.

Everyone: You have to go to college to get a job in animation.

paulmcg: I WOULD RATHER SLEEP IN THE STREET WITH NO CAR THAN GO TO COLLEGE.

Everyone: Let us now needlessly debate the merits of the college educations or lack thereof of well-known professional animators!

Rinse, repeat.

Edit: Requires registration to see. But it's free and, you know, instant. Yeah.

Incentive. paulmcg: I just want to do 3D as my backup until I can become a famous wrestler anyway.

Hey, some people sleep in the street with no car and still go to college.

That is a little weird. I would think they'd just require a portfolio like other art fields. If you managaed to get good enough without school- which is entirely possible- you're in, and so forth.

Granted, animation portfolios would be significantly more difficult to submit than pictures, paintings or comics, but I'd still think they'd be less worried about a degree than experience with the media involved.

I guess you learn something new every day, or something. :3

Actually, animation portfolios are EASIER to submit, because all you've got to do is send a little CD, instead of a fecking huge envelope.

But, it would be very, very hard to learn the latest techniques without the resources available at a college. Unless you're independently wealthy and can afford $30,000* for state of the art computers and software.

(This number is based off of some guys I know who did just that and started their own animation company.)

For those inclined, check http://www.bugmenot.com for a login.

A snippet: I can do it without college...Im not going to college...so just think of it...now that im not going to college....I have to do something in order to survive...now that means either I become good enough to support myself in 3d without colllege or I sleep in the street...with no car...food or anything else but my computer heh....

The kinder souls over on the forum feel bad for him. I just feel like laughing.

*facepalm*

You know, I want to be an editor. And by his logic, I shouldn't have to go to college for that, because really, I could teach myself, couldn't I?

So what the hell am I doing living in this oversized closet dorm room, huh? Oh, that's right. Because I need at least a Bachelors to get a freaking job and not starve to death.

Somebody beat that kid over the head with earth logic plzkthx.

I was going to make a big "lol i want to be one too" post, until I realized that you probably mean an editor (as in writing) and not a film editor.

So yeah.

Don't worry, the bitch-goddess Life will do that for you, and probably sooner rather than later.

I do storyboards for a kid's animated show, and I don't have a degree for it. But God, how I wish I'd been able to finish college. It's one of the big regrets of my life. Shows go on hiatus, and they get cancelled, and when everybody's laid off at the same time you really need a non-industry job that isn't completely lowpay and depressing.

Not to mention that film classes are really effective in preventing that panicky "Guh?" feeling when asked to handle something fancier than you've previously attempted.

I keep taking courses when I can, and I really love it. I'm just getting to old to understand this irrational hatred of school.

It's a CGI show called Psi-Kix, and it's produced by Krislin Company. In the first season it was called Psi Kids, I think, then another client bought it and renamed it. I think. We're two eps from the end of the second season, but I'm not sure what cable station/network is supposed to carry it.

In two episodes I'm on hiatus, I guess. I haven't heard if we've been picked up. FretFretFret.

I do have an irrational hatred of school, but I suspect it's because I came down with the chicken pox in the middle of my very last final exam.

"What's on your face? Are you all right?"

"What? Nothing. I feel fi--BLEARGH!"

I think I got a B.
