encouraging hate and bad feelings ([info]feenix) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

I sense a large wank in the making.
Someone posts to a popular RPG fanfic archive's board asking about the large number of phantom members.

Someone else muses on the reasons why they don't post with their accounts.

One of the regs bashes said person.

"OMGLIEKURSOEVUL" ensues.

Knowing this board for over a year and a half now, I'm pretty sure this will explode all over the place.

(And, yeah, I agree that the guy was being an ass. I just think jumping in and wanking again will result in A RAINBOW OF SAD more unnecessary stupidity.)

Dude, Feenix. You have no clue how "WHOOOA!" I was when I saw Icy's being wanked on the top of my friends page here.

That thread wasn't wanky last time I checked in... *clicks*

Oh. Ghost. No wonder.

Haha. Actually I think the wankier part of Icy Brian's page is the fact that he has a "fanfic approval committee".

A page boiling down to "All fics from a title I don't like are exactly the same as horribly written porn and netspeak Mary Sues, no matter how they're written - they're the same, I don't care" is the point where my fuck-you alarm went off.

That was oh, three years ago?

Whaaaatever.

He never said that, hon.

I distinctly recall a big page snarking about "Things Not to Send, Ever" with links to random FF.N stories, among them bad Mary Sues and the entire FF7 category.

That would have been "Jerm's fanfic tips," which Brian removed after I complained about it.

He never wrote it.

Well, as I said, this was a while ago and I had no idea it would be taken down.

And since it was the guideline page I didn't memorize who literally typed the words. I don't know these people, nor am I out for anyone's blood.

It wasn't the official guideline page. Sorry.

If all people read that well, I hope that Brian doesn't get emails complaining about the pairings of my fics because, you know, they're on his site and all. And if it's on the fanfiction page, he must've handpicked it!

...I don't understand the logic of a page telling people what to send/not send that doesn't actually apply to the site it's on. But then, I'm used to one-person operations and not sites with boards of approval and such. Yeah, maybe I am illiterate, but "This list of guidelines doesn't apply to this page; we're not sure why it's here, really" didn't come across all that clearly.

Well then. It kept me from sending my horrible FF7 fic in there, so I guess it did have some positive effects after all. ;)

...I can read, thank you. :/ I'd never be good enough to get in on a juried site (only twice on RPGamer, woo-fucking-hoo), but I can at least read.

*slinks off to feel crappy*

The issue I seem to be having is that we're not even talking about the guidelines page of the site. It was never called the guidelines of the site. It was linked to as someone else's fanfic tips and every single one of them, including the piece that remains, were smartass tongue in cheek things. It's bad that you took it wrong, when I saw it I thought it was a terrible idea, but it still wasn't the guidelines.

And it's such a large site, with so many sections and contributers, if it had someone else's name at the top, you can't attribute to the webmaster. And you basically were calling him an asshole for something he didn't even freaking write.

I just don't understand how so many people can badmouth the site, considering it's not even that difficult to get a story accepted. They're just wusses who wouldn't try because there are SOME standards. And since I know your work, I'm pretty damn sure that unless this is like an eight year old story and you didn't learn grammar until fairly recently, that it would more than pass.

Iiiiii doooon't knooooooow hiiiiiiiiiim. I'm sorry I insulted your friend's website, but I don't know him, nor do I carry a grudge.

And I don't know, if you screen what comes onto your site so minutely, perhaps you should be held accountable in some fashion for what goes on there. *shrugs*

Nnnno, I worked mostly in FFVII and all of my work sucked without exception.

And I'm "so many people"? Cool, maybe I can start my own personal army of minions. :D

My point was just that the snark was unnecessary in suggesting what to send into the site, and that it was unfair to lump all FF7 fic in with badfic without exception. That's all. If that makes me evil incarnate (and a one-person legion!), so be it.

MY point is that it's not really screened minutely. And if you still think so... ARGH.

And the snark still isn't the guidelines. Sorry.

I get that the snark wasn't the official word, but they did put it onto the website, so... I'd still consider it canon, so to speak. Anyway. *shrug*

And if it's not OMG TEH EL1337 ONLEE, then what's with the Board of Directors?

The board that has to approve every fic that comes down the pike.

I don't get where "Every fic is hand-picked by our crack team of fic experts" and "We are really easy to get into" meet.

(I also don't get where "every fic is hand-picked by our crack team of fic experts" and "whoops, how did that snarky thing get on there" meet, but I gave up on that part.)

It's not a bad thing to be highly selective, as long as it's owned up to.

...but I am sensing that I'm never going to get anywhere with this. I am not questioning your loyalty to the place. I yield. Will say nothing about it henceforth.

Sorry it had to go that way.

Re:
[info]quinctia

Well I don't know where you picked up on the experts idea or the highly selective idea.

Fics are weeded to make sure the ones that get picked up have coherent grammar, actually have some canon following and characterization, and basically just don't make people's heads explode.

Considering in progress isn't a big deal and there aren't any basic length requirements, it's a lot easier to get posted there than, say RPGamer or Gameforms, or lots of other places.

The reason why it's more than one person is to make sure that it's fair and so Icy's head doesn't explode from the amount of stuff that comes in.

Uh, anyone can get onto RPGamer. Even I've been on RPGamer. I've emailed an author about their story on there asking about the ideas behind them, because I thought it was an interesting premise, and they're like, "lol d00d I dunno I just wrote it omg u need to not taek this so serius"

...so, yeah. They do publish some good stuff, but it's not like it's hard to get in. Hell, I won a freaking award there once; they clearly have NO idea what they're talking about.

I've never tried Gameforms (I thought their whole "shut down the site and change the URL for no apparent reason" bit was irritating), so I can't speak for that.

Anyway, I get the idea, best site in the whole universe and everyone is wonderful, daisies, candy hearts and rainbows, yadda yadda.

Uh we went through were you dismissed the fact that RPGamer weeds fics because a) you got in and b) you wrote a writer and he was an idiot.

Like I said, you have some bias that you can't explain. Fine. But it's your own issue.

I don't know how familiar any of you are with the IcyBrian archives, but I have a hell of a hard time respecting a place that hosts pathetic things like this (http://www.icybrian.com/fanfic/thechocobo.html) and this (http://www.icybrian.com/fanfic/sephchocobo1.html).

Of course, you're free to judge for yourself the merit of the above (and I use this term loosely) fics... ^___^

I'd venture a guess that those were posted before the approval guidelines were set up; the site didn't always screen submissions.
