Vintage customers suck wank, anyone?
I like reading through the archives of that community, seeing what i missed before i found the place. Today, i found This little gem.

Not extreme exploding wank, but..basically a poster complains about how people keep telling her she should donate her long hair to charity. A respondent makes the mistake of wondering why cancer patients would be concerned with wigs when they're, you know, DYING (her words). People get mad, and one wishes her to go bald! Yay!

Personally, speaking as someone with hair well past her waist, the wank is on the part of the people who don't see a single thing wrong with walking up to complete strangers and basically saying "Lovely hair - get rid of it."

Like someone else pointed out, why not just go up to people and say "Hey, you got two perfectly good kidneys. Get rid of one."

Sorry, but no. My body, my life, and even if I'm working somewhere and get that kind of inane comment from a customer, they are getting the most chilling, deadpan stare in response that I can muster.

I used to have very long hair myself, at the time i couldn't imagine ever cutting it. I was very attached to it and would get seriously freaked when people would even suggest i cut it. So i can get where she's coming from. I wouldn't have cut my hair off, even for charity. I guess it seems selfish but that's how i felt about my hair.

First the hair thing is IMO just flat out bizzare... I mean if she was say planning on getting it cut I could see someone suggesting that she donate it, but flat out stating 'cut your hair for charity', uh okaaaay.... What's wrong with simply saying 'you have pretty hair!'?

But I must say that bluedragonflyie needs to be smacked and HARD. Yes dear the only two ways someone could possibly lose their hair by cancer or AIDs. That's it. There's no other way a child could go bald.

And yes many people are in chemo to BEAT the cancer, I'd double check that doctor's creditinals if I were you.

My mother temporarily went bald in the mid-1970s, when she had mono. I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing that with mono, but there you go.

Yeah, that last part is a grand WTF if I've ever seen one.

>>I disagree. Chemo is a last resort. There is no proof it actually helps anyone. And this information came from a doctor.>>

Guh?

What's interesting is that I do agree with the OP to a point - it is rather rude to make comments like that to total strangers - but flipping the fuck out about it and spurting random medical "knowledge" left and right doesn't exactly inspire me to sympathize.

Stuff like the "How dare people make conversation about my hair!!" post further down the comments are the main reason I left the comm. For fuck's sake, people, you work with the public. Some people like making conversation. If you don't want to engage, then don't engage, but don't act like you've been WRONGED because some middle-aged hausfrau made a comment about the weather or your jewelry or some random inane thing. If you're so alien to the concept of chitchat and it PAINS you so badly, get another damn job. (Yes, I know comments like that are frowned upon there. But there are entry-level jobs that don't require contact with people, like data entry.) The "OMG how DARE they talk to me!!!" posts just irritate me.

Ranting now. Anyway.

Then you get the ones who fly into a murderous rage when someone DOESN'T talk to them. You just can't win.

Indeed. I saw fewer of those on that particular comm, but it makes just as much sense.

Do you know if living in a fire watch tower in Alaska is an entry-level position? Because that's about the level of personal interaction that I like on the job.

Seriously - I am highly autistic and paranoid when it comes to interpersonal shit with customers, but I recognize that it is in the greater part myself and not the silly consumer beasts who are deviating from the social norm.

Still, I would have to draw the line at someone who wanted me to remove parts of my body, even regrowable parts, on their suggestion. If nothing else, asking for charitable donations - whether in cash or kind - is soliciting, and most stores don't allow soliciting inside.....

Ew. I can sympathize with the OP. When I was working as a cashier a few years back, my hair was relatively long; not spectacularly so or anything, but long enough so that I could just barely have donated it without ending up totally bald. I had a co-worker, an older woman who was donating her hair to that Locks of Love place, who bugged me for a month straight that I should do it too. It didn't matter how many times I told her I didn't want super-short hair. All that got me was "oh, but think of the poor little kids you could help!" It got so I dreaded working with her.

Point is, people should mind their own business, even when they're being nosy for the sake of charity. Though it was insensitive for her to say that about cancer patients, for me the real wank here is in the "Oh, if your hair's that long you can certainly spare some to donate" comments. (That and "I hope you go bald". wtf?)

Funny enough, the ONLY time I've been asked if I'd be willing to donate my hair for wigmaking was when I went to have my bum length hair cut to shoulder length a few years back. I used to dye it a colour of red that was natural enough looking that even the hairstylist I saw thought it was my natural colour.

Alas, when I informed him that it was dyed, he said, "Too bad, you have really beautiful hair and it would make a lovely wig."

If I could have, I would have donated it. I've been lucky in life to have really nice hair, but unfortunately it started going grey when I was in my early 20's and I now dye it because frankly, the mixed brown/silver looks damned awful.

But, to get back to the wank, I do agree with one thing, it's plain rude to go up to someone you don't know (or even someone you DO know) and suggest they cut their hair and donate it. That is so not on. I could see if you found out a friend was cutting their long hair off to a much shorter length and suggesting they might want to donate it to Locks of Love or something, but even then, that's still a very personal choice and it should be respected no matter what the answer is.

The audacity of people is quite astounding. It's her hair and she can do what she pleases with it. However, it's obvious that having a full head of hair is a great concern for people who'd rather not lose their hair.

I guess it's a vanity thing. Whatever it is, there's nothing "stupid" about it and looks are a priority for some people.

That said, my hair is thinning as baldness runs in my family and I inherited my father's hair. It's also turning white. At least I dye my hair now! WEHEHEH! So, I'm a little jealous. :D
