More Black Wank from Blackfolk
This time--it's tipping!

tcnugent talks about being the manager of a restaurant--one owned by a black celebrity--and how people at her restaurant cringe when they see blacks come in. This is leading up to the question, "Why don't we know how to tip? DISCLAIMER: By asking this question, I'm wondering if it is a lack of knowledge of the tipping system (i.e. percentage) or is it just people being cheap?"

And the wank, she flies! Some highlights:

"Why do I need to add 16 bucks to my 100 buck meal for the guy who brought me water sometimes?"; the obligatory "then don't take a serving job" comment; "Tips should only go towards the good ones, it's not an obligation",
"95% of blacks are bad tippers" followed by "proof plz"; OMG CLASSISM!; and "Then just pay them more!" I can't get through all this spooge in hip boots.

And the wank doesn't stop here! It carries over to another post, where EDIT: rubyphoenix posts an open letter complaining about black patrons and uses stereotypical names like "Pookie" and "B Rock". Highlights include complaining about making another post,, calling people B Rock and Pookie, telling people to stay home if you don't like to tipand calls for better attitudes from the servers or you get NOTHING!

I'm really starting to wonder if that myth of black men having longer penises is true; they sure know how to wank with them, regardless of size.

The Pookie thing isn't helping me at all, since I keep thinking they're talking about Garfield's teddy bear.

In regards to the last paragraph, I remember coming across a medical study that showed that a statistically significant percentage of black males had longer penii than white males, but not by much. Or something. It was really long, and the main point seemed to be, "They're not that much longer, so everyone quit yammering about it."

Anyone else seen any corroborating/conflicting evidence or reports?

I vaguely remember some report that there was a measurable difference in the lenghth of the flaccid penis but no difference in the length when erect. Followed by a bunch of semicomprehensible dither about black men being more prone to being afflicted by some or other benign medical condition that made more blood pool in the penis during periods of non-arousal.

But don't ask me for evidence. It's odds on I'm remembering it completely wrong.

I can't read more than 20 comments of any argument about tipping before I want to destroy something.

Personally I think that everyone in the country should be enlisted into the food service industry for at least a year. It'd be way more useful than an army draft, and maybe it would deflate people's ridiculous sense of entitlement. Compassion is not just a river in Egypt, people.

I personally have never worked as a waitress, but my older sister has. Hearing her complaints about crappy tippers from the time i was 14 or so has made it so I tip around 15-25% every time.

I've worked in the food service industry, several times, most of which left me in a position where I really, really needed the damn tips. But if I gave shitty service and got no tip, there was really no one to blame but me. Yeah, some people just don't tip regardless, and those people should suffer the fires of hell for eternity, but I don't see a problem with bad service = no/small tip. I figure it's better than them deciding to leave a word with the MOD.

I overtip when ordering food delivered on the general idea, borne out by experience, that your food shows up faster when you do that. At a former job, I was the only person who could get the Chinese food delivered on time when we all pitched in for Chinese, for precisely that reason. And last Superbowl Sunday I ordered pizza and got it in fifteen minutes flat.

Just this past weekend, the pizza I ordered took forever, and the driver was flustered and explained they only had one driver that evening, so I overtipped on the idea that it may have been the only tip he got all night and I know how hard delivery is on your car. I'm predicting that the next time I order from them, I'll be one of the first on the delivery list. :)

I've never worked food service, but I was brought up to just automatically add 15% to the bill - not to even think of it as a tip, but just as part of the bill. If you get really good service, you leave more.

Of course, the number of people that look at me like I'm insane because I have a firm rule that I always tip servers, food delivery people, taxi drivers, and those dudes that bring your bags to your room at hotels is quite high.

Dude. Especially taxi drivers. Tip taxi drivers. They talk to each other.

TIPS doesn't stand for To Insure Prompt Service, people.

And WTF does the world not owing your black ass have to do with tipping? If you don't want to tip, stay home.

This is why I'm really grateful to live in a non-tipping culture. It's just so much less complicated without a setup in which some people are dependent on the good graces of others to survive.

It's also why I enjoy traveling to countries where a basic gratuity % is always added to a bill. No debating what is/isn't a good tip, and I can just choose to leave extra if the service was especially good.

If I'm too broke to go to a real restaurant, eat a good meal, and leave a good tip for my server, then I don't go. There's always fast food. Why do so many people feel they have to go out to eat when they can't afford the full cost? Yes, the system can suck for the servers, but being a cheap bastard isn't going to change it, it's just going to screw them over. /wank

It's not a racial term, really. It's more of a stereotypical name, like a black woman being named Shanifa Moniqua ShaNayNay Jackson or somthing.

I'm not sure if this is a cultural thing or what, but Japan doesn't tip. It's weird for me, coming from the US, but I've noticed that when I go out with my friends, the service isn't really all that great. The server generally comes up (or you flag them down), takes your order, brings your food, and you're lucky if you see them again after that. No real friendliness, and not any attention to anything else your needy ass wants (like more water, wah).

Now, this may just be a cultural thing or bad luck on my part, but it would seem that the system of tipping sometimes makes servers work harder and/or act friendlier in the interest of getting a good tip. I agree you shouldn't have to tip for bad service, but I'm usually nice when I'm at home and give around 20%. Easier math anyway.

Then again, maybe they're just scared of me because I'm OMG!FOREIGN(DON'T-EAT-ME), but I haven't noticed anything really different when I watch the poor dejected-looking college-age servers help Japanese customers, so.

So, in my experience tipping is a chance for "better" service, not, you know, the man sticking it to you.

(reposting, sorry)

Not sure. I am Italian, we don't tip, but generally the service is just fine. Having been in the US recently, I didn't notice any significant difference. Waiters here tend to be very friendly! too much at times

In theory, I prefer the non-tipping system, but then I'm wondering if it's just because I grew in that culture.

no I know white people that think the same way. I mean half the time servers don't really serve well. They are either very rude. Don't come with my water fast enough. I ALWAYS tip. Always at least 15%...unless they piss me off. They come to the table thinking that all black people are the same.

WTF. He bitches about racial generalization and yet he's willing to tar all servers with the same brush? Thank you for shopping at the Irony Depot, don't come again!

15% is usually the rule, but I'd say it doesn't apply if you're eating at a cheapo hole in the wall. As an ex waitress at Waffle House, there were few things I found more infuriating than watching customers trying to figure out 15% of 75 cents, and checking it five times to make sure they didn't overtip the waitress.
