10:29a - Huh -huh! You said "pole!"
Meet Allison Stokke (pronounced "stow-kee").

Stokke is an 18-year old champion pole vaulter from California. She's also very easy on the eyes.

She's also the current flavor of the month on the Blogosphere, with most pointing to the Maxim/FHM-like sports blog With Leather as the spot where things exploded into full phenomenon status.

Allison and (most likely mostly) her dad, Allan, don't like the non-athletic attention she's getting. (Even though I've yet to see a single photo of her that wasn't taken at an athletic event or was in a pose that be considered "undignified")

So what's the solution? Tell With Leather to cut it out? (They've already removed the original pic)

Just ignore the storm and wait for it to fade like so many other 'net memes?

Nope - The solution was to go to the Washington Post. (May require registration: BugMeNot will help)

In the Post's comments section(Where the meat of the wank is), DaysOfBrokenArrows sums up the thoughts of many (myself included):

This story is about a girl who doesn't want attention so she and her folks talk to the world's second biggest newspaper about how she doesn't want attention -- and they supply a photo as well.

This story belongs on Fark.com: Girl's family talks to WashPost about she doesn't want attention (photo included).

Chiming in for the opposition, Bukkonen:
It's pretty damned sad that there are so many sick American men getting so little decent sex that they want to spend more than a minute thinking about some athletic high-school girl. Get a life, losers! America has become a sad, twisted society.

And here's filmex speculating on ulterior motives:

As for this kind of "internet abuse", I imagine what has her lawyer father in a snit is less the possibility of a real life stalker than someone mucking up his well choreographed life-plan for Allison where she qualifies for the Beijing Olympic Games and becomes America's newest sizzling sports hottie, making the world forget about Danica Patrick and Maria Sharapova as he markets her image with all the industriousness of Col. Tom Parker.

All of this is on Page One. ...Of eleven.

Dive in and enjoy (but not too much. Don't want to be a perv or anything...)

ETA: Boston-based blog Barstoolsports thinks it's cute that WL gets the credit for starting Stokkemania when they first creepily lusted after featured her.

ETA #2: [Possible ulterior motive for this crusade] Allan Stokke is apparently a fairly well known defense attorney who's defended some less-that-savory fellows... one of which you might have heard of...

ETA #3: Metafilter gets in on the act. Half the context, twice the "What Is The Internet Coming To?" hand-wringing. (Thanks [info]pink_rhombus!)

8:42p - We don't need no stinking common language!
AbandonedPlaces is normally a nice, quiet community where people post pictures of derelict and falling apart buildings, which happens to have a large contingent of Russian speaking users. But lately, not so much with the quiet.

This all started with a now deleted post of a picture of the White House, with commentary something along the lines of "I wish this place was abandoned!."

Skyfi_lor makes a reaction post saying that the mods should make new rules not allowing political posts. Faline_eyes immediately responds with I'll second that. however, remember the moderators have been lenient with you too. - "Keep all posts in English.". Skyfi_lor insists he doesn't have time to translate his entries into English, and P.S. I'm dont agree with "Keep all posts in English.". This post actually has a lot of fairly reasonable debate about the English-only rule, and isn't particularly wanky.

The mod makes a post saying that the English-only rule is staying. And cue the wank.

But that's not all! Then Kasmoie makes a post stating that h/s/it is starting a new, open language community. This post cheerfully brings you yet more wank and cat macros.

Just remember, restricting things to English is "chauvenistic and insulting".
