Kirsten Dunst gives a homeless man a dollar and people argue about it on the internet.
Not a lot, but it's pretty damn wanky anyways.

I do not understand the point of having avatars that take up half your screen. I mean, I would read the wank, but Johnny Depp seems to be offering me a cupcake.

I'd read the wank but having to scroll sideways makes me cranky.

I just stopped reading at that point and stared at Johnny. Love the haircut, too.

I hate scrolling sideways. It annoys me so. Especially when my reaction to the subject matter is "Who cares?" The dude is right back to poverty, obscurity, and his five minutes will be over. The haves and the have nots are just the way they always have been and always will be.

I'm kinda liking the avatar of Jon Stewart.

I want Johnny's cupcake. I'm all about the cupcake.

Cupcake.

And me without the appropriate Gir icon.

So... a celebrity can't do even something a little nice wihout someone freaking out over it?

If I throw a handful of change to the street corner musician, no one would care. But if Johnny Depp did it, there would be riots somewhere.

Where I'm from, you really shouldn't give homeless people money. If anything, give them food.

Five dollars (to me) seems like too much, she might be rich but... sometimes you just don't know what people will do with your generosity. At times you could be making it worse.

Very true. A lot of homeless people are addicted to some substance or another (alcohol being the most frequent, I believe), which is one of the reasons I always give food. (In fact, my parents, who worked with homeless people for years, gave me strict instructions on giving money vs giving food.)

And I don't know how much of a problem this is in the US, but over here (especially back in Belgium), if you give, say, €20 to a woman begging on a corner because she has a kid with her, nine times out of ten that money will not actually go towards feeding the woman or her child, but to the gangs that round up beggars in Eastern Europe and bring them here to make money off them.

I give money, and occasionally leftover booze to the homeless, because it makes them happy. I can't give them a house, I can't solve their problems, but I can make them happy for twenty minutes.

I once gave a homeless lady my gloves, because it was freakin' cold out and her hands were all scarlet and chappy. Also, the gloves had little animal heads on each finger, so...free entertainment.

Today, that woman is Shari Lewis. Okay, she isn't really.

In the US they're addicted to SUV's and lobster.

I really wish I were kidding.

Around here you don't give them anything because most of them are con artists. It's been on the news.

If anything, you give to charities.

Ditto, here. When the woman you saw standing outside Walmart last week with a sign that said "traveling across country to a funeral/out of gas/plz help" is back *this* week with a new sign that says "lost job/need to buy formula and diapers/plz help" you tend to get pretty cynical about the whole giving money to panhandlers thing.

I once gave some leftovers from Taco Bell to a homeless person, seeing as I wasn't going to finish all of what I'd ordered. She looked at what I gave her, pushed it away with a look of disgust, and informed me that she didn't eat meat and I was a horrible person for 'donating murder'.

I boggle over that even now (6 years later), and honestly, that incident taught me a lesson: beggars are sometimes choosers, and when they are, take back what they're given and dump it; spill your leftover drink, and then scrunch it with the tray.

*bitter*

That's why you should always ask before giving someone food - on top of just being polite, it gives them an opportunity to tell you if they don't eat meat or if they have allergies to certain foods.

We usually associate vegetarianism with people who can afford it, but lots of homeless people *could* once afford it, and I don't think it's reasonable to ask them to give up their morals just because they make their life more difficult.

(Not that she wasn't a complete jerk about it. "I don't eat meat, but thank you" would have been the right thing to say.)

I consider offering classes in "How not to google your name on the internet" to Kirsten Dunst celebrities, as my business idea.

Hobbits will be charged twice the fees.

that girl has millions, a dollar?

I love that people think because you're rich you are automatically obligated to give a ton of money away. It was damn nice of her to give the dude a dollar, and I can't believe that in a community devoted to luxury fashion, people are bitching because she didn't give more. Why don't they stop buying all that Marc Jacobs stuff and donate money to the poor if they're so damn interested in being charitable?

Yeah, I'd like to see a show of hands as to how many of them actually give homeless people even a dollar. Maybe they should stop judging celebrities and spend the time they save volunteering for a soup kitchen or something.
