WE ARR INTELLEKCHOOULLL JIENTS!
Why am I a member of this community? Beats me. The name is annoying, the attitudes are annoying, but occasionally I get some good recs, so I journey on like a good soldier. But, recently, and thankfully, it's been bringin' the wank.

I'm only going to report one instance today, though, because I can do that, but if anyone wants to travel back to the Kerouac wank, I think it's still on the front page. Wotah.

reanimator feels that he doesn't need to read J.K. Rowling's work to say that she's a load of shite, and illustrates this...um...somehow. I was kind of distracted by the pretty picture, and my eyes didn't de-glaze until they fell on the wank.

And then it gets stoopid.

To use logodaedaly's metaphor, it basically goes into 'whose literary schlong is bigger'.

It includes such gems as:

j7bnvaaaetrd: You are a fraud. This is the Hipster Book Club. Go over to the Harry Potter community with the other virgins and dorks.

reanimator: In a way it`s even more tragic, educated people liking Harry Potter, because that means that all these thousands of pages of Proust, Dostoevsky and Tolstoi have been read in vain, if it doesn`t lead to a reliable crosshair of aesthetics and values.

marlenahooch, the voice of reason: I like you. I'm sorry people are being mean to you. and yes, this has degerated to whose literary schlong is bigger... "I have a degree in litereature" " I have spellcheck!" "I have an opinion!" "so do I" "*fight fight fight*" "I'm telling mom!" "I'm telling my personal friend harold bloom!" "hb is a pussy"

Basically, it boils down to: You cannot read and like both Doestevsky and Harry Potter, comrade, or the world will be eaten by a pack of scarf-wearing, pipe-smoking, Bloom-quoting jackals with three legs and an eye twitch.

Stop liking what I like, wankers. You're making what I like look like asshattery.

Wow. That's impressive. You know, I don't like Harry Potter and I kind of like Harold Bloom, but here's a tip, kids: EVERYONE'S WRONG ONCE IN A WHILE.

More importantly, what's 'hipster' about Bloom worship? XD

And yet, here you are doing just that. Oy.

Wait, Proust and Dostoyevsky are hipster now? The classics of Euro lit are in? Books you need to read in college are hipster?

If one asks oneself – what differentiates the human from the animal ?

One might answer, "The use of punctuation to express one's thoughts more clearly."

I feel kind of worried that anyone going by the name reanimator is going off about his/her crosshair of aesthetics and values.

I've never had zombie cunnilingus show up in my crosshair of aesthetics and values. But maybe I'm pointing my literary schlong gun in the wrong direction.

My guess is, looking at this guy's interests and default icon, the Linkin Park love has just recently been expurgated from his LJ and yet that little hint remains from not buying the 'rename' token. Which would probably cause most of his little hipster friends to kill and eat him.

Pretty sure it's the German(?) way of making quotation marks. I know a few countries use it, but I always forget which ones. It's one of those things that seems to be the last thing people fix when they are typing in a second language.

What. The. Fuck.

I've read all five HP books (book five was shite, I'll admit that) and I can get through the depression that characterizes Dostoevsky works, yet because I like JKR, it invalidates my enjoyment of Dostoevsky? The logic, she has been abused and is left to cry from that argument.

I didn't know that reading Harry Potter would prevent me from ever reading a true literary masterpiece (c. Harold Bloom) again. It's just a hunch, but I imagine that an adult who will only read HP probably wasn't going to be picking up Crime and Punishment anyways.

Dude. This person obviously hasn't gone and read any of the epic very long, wanky deep essays in HP fandom. There are people out there who niggle and pick at the books to such an extent that Harold Bloom would probably be asking them to back off and go read some mindless fantasy before their heads explode.

And anyone who hasn't had the experience of watching an English major go from making a psychoanalytic argument about incest in Things Fall Apart to making the same argument about incest in HP is...well, missing out on something very special.

Sorry; it happened offline a few years ago, in a class I was in that was supposed to teach English TA's how to instruct upper-level literature courses. This particular English major analyzed several father-daughter interactions in Things Fall Apart and, somehow using "thumb" and "gaze" as a launchpad, concluded the daughter had an Electra complex.

Someone asked her if the same thing worked for orphan children, and she said, "Oh, yes. For example, Harry Potter was obviously removed from his parents too young to fix his Oedipus complex on them, so he grew up being in love with Petunia Dursley." And off she went into how the descriptions of Petunia in the books could be interpreted to fit her insane out-there theory.

I keep skipping the introductory parts of the first chapters when I reread the HP books now.

Pretentious asshattery! I'd love it if it didn't make me want to spork my eyeballs out in a fit of rage.

Being "too hip" for grammar and proper spelling does not make you smart!

Being "too hip" for anything that "the unwashed masses" might enjoy does not give you automatic entrance into the cultural elite!

Having twelve college degrees does not exempt you from asshat status!

Having read a particular book does not automatically make your argument valid, especially when you're talking out of your ass!

AUGH!

*reaches for spork*

Yay! Lit wank! Just when I was considering going back to grad school, here come these people to change my mind!

Here's my favorite part:
j-unintelligiblelettersandnumbers!!11: They to all books written before and after. I can't believe that you were even accepted to a college. (Note that first sentence there. Who what?)
[info]say_revolution: I go to Columbia University, so don't talk to me about getting accepted to college... A person's intelligence isn't measured by how many smart books she's read. It's measured by the clarity and validity of the things she says. Sorry - you lose.

Missing words and intelligence snark, answered with Ivy League credentials, pithy sayings, and "you lose." [info]say_revolution gets an A+++.
