"The Masked Grader" finds a pile of freshman college Physics essays that have already been graded and decides to add his own comments to them.

Hilarity ensues.

Personally, I'm with the Masked Grader. Those essays make the baby Jesus English major cry. Also, I am a sucker for snarky comments.

I'm hoping that the actual assignment was to write a paper at a first-grade level and use the word "laser" in it.

In that case, they all did a damned fine job.

I ...

On one hand, my conscience is telling me that it's hardly these kids' fault that they've been shafted by their parents and the public school system, so we shouldn't be mean to them.

On the other hand, I want to kick them repeatedly in the shins because at least "stop, you're hurting me!" is a coherent thought.

Paper 4: "James Bond often has lasers built into his watches and his cars. His enemies often attack him with lasers. A more important use of lasers, however..."

That's the spirit. Why do so many wonderful people waste their time at the physics department when they could make so much better use of their powers in fandom?

If I ever got an assignment like that, I would be tempted to turn in a paper that ended with "So that's why I'm on the FBI's terror watch list."

Speaking as the grader for Phil 1000, I have to say that this guy is living my dream. Oh, if only I didn't have to be polite... *Wistful sigh*

As the grader for Astronomy 103/Astronomy 204 I tell students that they aren't allowed to watch me grade, because I say all the things to the papers that I am too polite to say to the students.

I'm so torn.

On the one hand, I'm not terribly impressed with what "The Masked Grader" did, in an ethical sense.

On the other hand, those papers sucked a lot, and god knows if I'd been assigned to grade them, I'd have made worse comments (only out loud/in IM/in locked posts in my LJ, not where the student would see them).

Also, after having a third hand magically attached (BY A LASER!): if some professor or TA gave me that assignment in a physics class, I'd want to kick him in the teeth for wasting my time. And then I'd write something stupid (see below) and fail. *g*

Lasers have had many applications in my everyday life. For example, last winter when we were attacked by Martians, Pa used laser guns to shoot the pesky little varmints out of the sky. I myself have laser vision, which has proved extremely helpful in cutting through the doors of bank vaults during armed robberies. A network of closely-spaced laser beams also provides an effective, cost-efficient, and above all, easily concealed way to confine a hostage. Yes, I'd have to say that my family wouldn't be where we are today without lasers, although Ma is talking about investing in kryptonite as well, just in case.

I'm also so very, very torn.

Horrible. Unethical. He should be shot. Etc.

On the other hand, I'm a teacher in freshman comp, and I want to bang my head repeatedly into walls over the papers I get, which are at least usually spelled correctly. This? Getting these kinds of papers might inspire the rampage I can feel boiling up in me whenever one of my students starts an essay with a sentence like, "Since the dawn of time, man has used computers."

You know how sometimes you see people driving incredibly badly, and you wish that the police would just stop them, take their cars and licenses away, and make them walk home? Likewise, handing in papers like those should have people summarily throw out of college.

"No, I'm sorry, you are quite clearly unsuited for an academic environment. Please leave. Now."

I fear for the future of civilization.

Ok, serious are these papers for real? And does the 3/3 on most of them mean what I am afraid this means?

These are college level papers, which means that the people writing them have how many years of school already, 8? 10? Maybe I am funny, but I would expect that people get a better paper together then ten lines how much fun they had pointing out constellations with a laser pointer, especially for a physics class, this is not how I spend my holidays.

In short O_o

I cannot believe people handed crap like that in to their professors, even for what was clearly a stupid assignment.

I can't even imagine handing in anything hand-written, for crying in the lord's sink.

Just... WHAT?

...

If I handed in a paper at University that was hand-scribbled on a sheet of lined notepaper, my professors would CRUCIFY me. Seriously, they'd refuse to mark a paper that wasn't typed. Those scribbles (especially where the student has made a mistake and scratched it out- oy) are just so many shades of inappropriate before we even get to the subject matter of the essays.

I would honestly hope that these kids write better for an actual assignment, say a term paper in their major subject, but I know I'm deluding myself. The ignorance and lack of care I see here rivals what I saw during peer reviews in my Honors English Composition class. Position papers, how I hate you.
