Feminists go boom.
The feminists are at it again. Someone uses an icon insulting another community member. Or something like that. The mod tells them to cool it. So they start a new post to bitch about how their freedom to express themselves has been taken away, how the mod is anti-feminist, blah blah blah. [info]ljdrama has been invoked; I'm waiting for F_W to be mentioned.

EDIT: Well, that was fast. I think I missed a couple of the really good comments, but nevertheless, here's the saved copy.

And because it just occured to me, the icon in question.

EDIT Strikes Back: [info]prettyveela helpfully found some more related and equally wanky links.

The origin of the wank, at least sort of: [info]brienf does a friends list purge and takes off one of [info]truly_divine's friends. Brief wank ensues. Note [info]brienf using the icon that [info]truly_divine edited with the highly attractive text. That being said, I think my favorite part is [info]livin_large19 commenting with the word "bitch" over and over and over. Creative.

Current threads in [info]truly_divine's lj: Whining about getting banned from the comm. Not too wanky. Except that the post before it was basically the same thing. And then, users truly_divine and acne go at it. The rampant use of dictionaries as evidence abound. I wonder again if a [info]jurisimprudence law exists to cover that, since copying dictionary definitions is popular lately.

Return of the EDIT: And surfing around like the nosy bastard I am, I discovered T_D whining to various communities.

Paraphrased quote: "It's my right to piss someone off!" T_D claims to find it all hilarious, which explains why she's posting to every comm that she thinks might care.

We can do it this way: >_>

truly_divine:

hmm
You want me to remove my icon in order to be apart of the community? Am I not free to express my opinions? And I haven't spoke of it nor have I gone in there insulting her.

Would you ban me if I were putting pro-Bush icon? Gee, that sounds fair...I just came here to express and discuss my opinions with other people. It has nothing to do with my icon or anything to do with Brienf.

Hmm. Equal rights, huh?

Everything. They want me to remove my icon because it offends someone. And i'm saying that doesn't feminism represent freedom to express yourself?

And yet, i'm not allowed to express myself through an icon because it offends someone. Isn't that hypocritical to the feminist message? That's what i'm saying. It has everything to do with feminism!

Yeah, but by dragging it into the public arena you are simply stirring up drama. They asked you to change your icon...in all honesty, it's not that big of a deal. It's a consideration issue; I don't use non-work-safe icons when I post in communities, as people might be reading from work. I don't post huge pictures without a cut as people might be reading with a dial-up connection. It's not censorship, it's CITIZENSHIP. Therefore, don't be an asshole, and play by the community rules. It's just downright RUDE to post with an icon harassing someone else, regardless of the issues at hand. I have no idea what the issues are, and I apologize for jumping down your throat, but you KNOW that the icon is less than polite. Play nice.

Well yes, feminism represents freedom to express yourself, but isn't it a little immature to have an icon that deliberately provokes arguments?

Either way, I don't think that this community is the place to argue it. It's public, and your problem appears to be with the mods, not the members.

***maclyn
2005-02-18 21:36 (link)
Because it's totally not hypocritical to call yourself a feminist but whine about how you should be allowed to use an icon calling a member of this forum a "bitch" because she was involved in drama that had nothing to do with you. Why should you have the right to personally attack another member every time you post? Freedom of speech doesn't apply here.

You're being really petty. You're not being told to remove the icon from your user pictures or you can't be a member of the forum; you've been told by the mods that it's an inappropriate icon to use when you're posting on this forum. Personal attacks are against the rules which are in the userinfo for all to see. You aren't going to gain sympathy with ridiculous arguments that you being told not to use petty, baiting icons with misogynist langauge is anti-feminist.

***auroraluna

Your Ani icon?

*cenye
2005-02-18 21:27 (link)
FYI... freedom of speech or expression does not apply to private forums such as a livejournal community. The moderator of a LJ community can create rules and refuse membership to a person without legal recourse. *shrug* the techinical definition of feminism does not include anything about freedom of expression so for the literalists it is not contrary to the "feminist message."

*smiledwide
2005-02-18 21:29 (link)

you're violating the rules of this particular lj community and you have been given the option not to post here with that icon or leave the community. don't throw the freedom of speech card for an issue that is ridiculously simple.

*princessmerbear
2005-02-18 21:43 (link)
You have to understand that there are many things on livejournal that offend many different people. If someone had an icon that said "Women belong in teh kitchen... making my dinner." that would be offensive to you and not appropriate for this community. Many members of this community are very offended by the use of the word "bitch" at all, especially in a deragatory way.

There are many flashpoints for people in this community. You have to watch your step around here because pretty much everything needs to be politically correct and non-offensive. Lots of people dive into the community not knowing the dynamic of who's involved, what's discussed, and what we talk about. Eventually, you'll learn, and you're less likely to slip up and have people ask you (nicely) to remove something or retract a statement.

Speaking of that, this drama-creating post is really NOT the way to go about making ammends or be a productive member of this community. And this community DOEs have some good information and interesting discussions. However, it will be hard for some people to forgive or forget about this.

Exactly. Plus, my response to "your X offends me!" is generally--with the exception of some friends who have legitimate issues, or the whole work-safe deal--"so grow a fucking thicker skin."
