mmm, feed-wank!
So on the bbcnewsworld LJ feed, the following headline/summary appears:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/click/rss/0.91/public/-/1/hi/world/americas/4289925.stm
Canada's prime minister confirms his country will not participate in the US missile defence system.

[info]synthetikmisery is quick to prod: Thanks Canada. While you are at it, please let more terrorists through your borders. (mm, I smell conservative!)

[info]circesissy bites: right because insanely expensive missile systems deter terrorists so lets just blame everything on canada!! (left-wing?)

[info]balalajkin, despite the weird-ass name, brings sanity to the splooge.

Small and growing. Whee!

Bleh. I have a strong dislike of people who think of Canada as the US's little brother and we'd better back him up OR ELSE!!!!111one!!1 And if we don't it's our fault if something bad happens. *sigh*

Energy beings who are the biggest Star Trek fans ever agree. Canada is its own country, and expecting it to back up every little thing the US decides to do is ridiculous in the extreme.

It's like episode 17, The Squire of Gothos, when Trelane tries to force the Enterprise crew to bend to his will. It's exactly like that. EXACTLY. Except with less medieval banquets and more yelling politicians.

A note: Most of these rights are only available in BC, Ontario, Quebec and other Maritime provinces. If you're running away from right-wing crazies, I would strongly suggest you stay away from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Yes, that's true. Pretty much the Canadian equivalent of Deliverance country over here (well, not quite that bad - but we sure do have a lot of crappy country and western music, and a psychotic dictator for a Premier). *Weeps, then throws pie at Klein*

I fell madly in love with Ailene after she whacked that attacker with a sculpture - that is my kind of woman. *Retains strong affection for PM Chretien* (Somebody pie'd Klein, too, you know: it was awesome. :D)

Yes, even though he spoke "neither of the two official languages" I still like him.

Martin, not so much, probably because my best friend has this huge abiding hate for him and rants about how much better Chretien was. (she also has this theory that Martin looks like a gremlin. She showed me this picture of him and I had to agree...)

I fell madly in love with Ailene after she whacked that attacker with a sculpture I know!

Sadly, I live in a city which held an anti-gay-marriage rally last summer, so I know the pain of living in Redneck Central, surrounded by only country and western music for miles around.

... and I had to go look up Sask's premier becaue I couldn't remember who he was. Poor Lorne Calvert, no cares about him with wife-beating hard-drinking Klein right next door.

Oh man, that sounds exactly like my city. *Headdesk* Seriously, we can't sleep for banjo playing around here. O.o

Want to trade premiers? Seriously, you guys can have the attention and we'll have... um... whatever it is Lorne Calvert does. ;p

We are totally redneck city twins, though my city is probably a lot smaller than yours. The sheer redneckery and roughneckery that goes on around here is enough to make me scream most days (though mostly to drown out the whine of the country music being played in the dorm next door).

Nah, you can keep the attention (it's never looked good on Sask at any rate). Lorne Calvert says gay marriage is a-okay, and for that, I say he's a-okay, even if I forget who he is most of the time.

BC's a paragon of liberalism, what with Randy White and Stockwell Day. :P

And Alberta, while right-wing, is not as crazy as other Canadians make it out to be. Over here our most right-wing Conservative MPs support civil unions for gays, while you don't get that in the US hardly ever. Plus we've got people like Jim Prentice (<3) who are the reason I'm in supporting the Conservatives right now.

But I disgress. What American Republican politicians often do down there would be totally intolerable here in Alberta. (Even though we've had a few MPs who make anti-gay statements, though they pay the price.)

Mmm Canada politics.

Hey, BC is still better than Alberta. (though Stockwell Day is a creepy, creepy man. he still gives me the shivers).

Canada's politicians are better than the US's when it comes to tolerance and acceptance, but I still wouldn't suggest that any Americans looking for a more liberal place to live to move into the prairies. Especially in Alberta where some the population can get pretty intolerance towards gays, (and the Natives portion of the population to boot). Sure, they aren't nearly as bad as the US, not even by half, but I wouldn't really call this area totally liberal friendly. (but yes, Jim Prentice = <3, hell even the right-wingers at least supporting civil unions get a big ol' <3 from me when compared to the US)

... also, just so people know? The gun control laws are totally ignored out here in Alberta and Sask. Pretty much everyone considers them to be a stupid idea (and I sorta agree, but that's another wank for another day).

Gun Control's totally different in Canada than in America, too. Compare the NRA and the CFA's platforms and you'll definately see the difference.

Well, I'm gay and I live in Alberta (Red Deer, where Stockwell Day spent his time calling a respected member of the community a pedophile), and I certainly haven't run into many problems. It's bad, but certainly better than any American city. Of course, we're a semi-Urban area with a more progressive population, and I imagine there's more of a problem in towns and rural areas.

Canada certainly has its problems, but our Conservatives are much less conservative than the Republicans (And even about half the Democrats!) are in the States.

Very true. Up here, the people who own guns are in rural areas and they're usually owning 22's and shotguns for animal control reasons, and ocasionally home protection, since the cops are at least an hour away. And most of the people brining automatic weapons are 'hunters' from the states.

I live out in the middle of Saskatchewan in a very largely rural area (and the local 'city' is more of a giant rural town rather than an urban area), and there can be some pretty intolerant people around here. But yeah, still more tolerant than a lot of American citizans seeing how I can usually get most people around here to agree to the idea of civil unions.

Very true, and it also helps that the balance of power is held by the liberal urban areas out in Ontario and Quebec rather than here in Alberta, meaning that in order for Conservatives to do anything, they need to lean towards the left more than the right.
