Who knew "parasite" was a curse word?
First time post, both here and on journalfen in general.

It all started when Wicked_Wish posted a... post about some article about-abortions-but-not-really. Her post was linked to everywhere.

At tmi_chix, there's always a bunch of "I think I'm pregnant... shit..." posts. One member thought that part of Wicked_Wish's rant was relevent, and posted that piece on tmi_chix with a link back to W_W's journal.

Bitchness objects to W_W's use of "parasite" to describe a fetus.

A bunch of people shoot back with a definition pointing out that it fits what a fetus is pretty well.

Bitchness replies many times that, because it was offensive, it shouldn't've been posted.

Wank ensues.

Because nothing offensive should ever turn up in a community called "tmi_chix," and someone going by the pseudonym "bitchness" really has all sorts of leeway to complain about offensiveness. Keep fighting the good fight, bitchness!

Christ. You know, I can understand how the whole "protective mother" thing might be necessary at times, but some people are just fucking ridiculous about it. "OMG, someone I don't know on the internet used a word with vaguely negative connotations to describe a hypothetical fetus! MUST DEFEND MY BABIES' HONOR!"

Who wants to bet that her kids are spoiled as hell? I don't even want to think about how she'll react the first time some kid insults her precious little miracles on the playground.

Damn, no kidding. I don't really understand it at all. Some people seem to feel personally affronted by anyone who doesn't love babies. It's seriously weird. (The converse is weird too...childfree people who get bothered by any mention of liking kids.)

I mean, maybe it's because I have no maternal instinct to speak of (I like kids, just don't particularly want them) but it's pretty silly. I see the same thing on boards where I post where people get horrifically offended by, say, someone thinking their six month old is a boy when it's a girl, or vice versa. It's a BABY. It's baby-shaped. The only reason it looks more like one gender than the other is because people dress it that way (or not.)

Especially in a way that is, if you really think about it, *anti* abortion. Her whole post was in refernece to the suggestion of eliminating the need for abortions by preventing conception through government aid and education.

But oh noes, our government can't do that. *That* would be logical and rational.

Good lord. I think "parasite" is a needlessly harsh word too, if we're talking general pregnancy discussion, but it was a RANT, for God's sake. Perhaps all the instances of "fucking" should have been edited too?

Lord, yes.

I got there from theferrett, whose post then has an Ubersensitive New Age Boy talking about how he hopes the "future mother of his children never uses such a word," or something. Fortunately, sane people point out that plenty of perfectly sane *parents* use the word, so I don't have to smack him. (Hi, yeah. 22. Parasitic, at least until May.)

And from the point of view of someone who doesn't want to be pregnant? Definitely parasitic.

Something small concerning Supporting Our Troops brewing in "customers suck" here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/customers_suck/9567537.html

...I said a thing or two therein. Probably was dumb. And I spotted it after someone deleted some of their posts, but can imagine...

Am I the only one who totally missed the connection between that badly thought-out rant and the original article? I mean, yeah, okay, the conservative movement has some screwy views on gender relations, but how does women not having orgasms relate to that, or, for that matter, to pregnancy?

There's also the point about the issue of foeti not being parasites because they contribute the continuation of the mother's DNA which is rather important and all, but, y'know, I don't think these people want to think about things too hard, or else they might explode < /wank >.

Well, arguably, if you view pregnancy as the main point of sex, the male orgasm is necessary but the female orgasm is not. Or such is the theoretical basis of the argument.

Yes!! That's one of the thing that bugs me about the "parasite" anology. And if it's a parasite, then how come the mother's body helped to produce it in the first place, via releasing the egg from an ovary and providing a blood-filled lining to the uterus and stuff? If there's a parasite here, it's the human DNA, not the embryo (of course, the DNA is more of a puppet-master than a parasite, but...) </wank>

Well, the funny thing, too, is that she's promoting an abstinence-only program to solve women's problems, telling the ladies to just have better control over their urges.

I see the point she wanted to make, but I'm pretty sure she didn't want to put herself on the same side of the line as the radical conservatives. Which she effectively did.

Oh God, I hate that rant. After she rolled out her "obvious solution" she totally lost me. I do agree that there's a double-standard, but by refusing to have sex with the "bad men" we're just living up with it. Her assumption that all pro-life men are also "find 'em, fuck 'em, leave 'em" types also makes me go WTF?

The moment I saw that rant, I knew it was going to be here sooner or later. I see what w_w is getting at, and I even understand her sentiment, but the whole presentation was what was wanky to me.

(That, and I wouldn't fuck a guy who was anti-choice. Plain and simple.)

like wise I will never have sex with a woman that wasn't pro-choice. There are times (many of them actually) when not having an abortion is a very irresponsible action.

The biologist in me gets pains when people start talking about offspring in utero as parasites.

(It's generally accepted that symbiotic relationships are INTERspecies, not INTRAspecies...)
