Over in thequestionclub, Lierre asks:

Anyone else find it outrageous/absurd to have an International Women's Day and not recognise one for the male gender?

Wank happens. It's small, but growing.

Men can have a day as long as they call it International Penis Day. Because that would amuse me. (Hee. "Penis". Funny word.)

If we have an international penis day, can we change the name of the women's day to "international vagina day"?

Though... That's rather unfair to the transsexuals, I think...

Last year people on my university campus were up in arms because we didn't have a women's centre. They were putting up posters and making speeches about it, without any of them actually saying what sort of services a women's centre is supposed to provide... if they had, that would have ruined their point, because our campus has all those things but not localized in one 'women's centre'. I thought the whole thing was absurd, so I started putting up signs demanding to know where the men's centre was.

Sadly, the women's centre people had torn them all down by 24 hours later. There are still a few of the women's centre posters around, but nobody pays any attention to them anymore. The whole thing kinda died a slow, painful death. Maybe I made my point after all.

Sometimes it's nice to have a central location for that sort of thing. But you should at least make the argument rather than just saying you need one on principle!

When men are denied rights over most of the planet, sure!

Seriously, this boys vs girls crap with the rabid sexists and militant feministshas to stop.

I'm sorry, you seem to be under the impression that the majority of feminists recognize logic. It was a nice try, but no.

the purpose of Intl women's day is to recognize the notion that women are human beings and deserving of equal human rights, which you know, is a novel notion in most of the world (See Afghanistan, HTH), Men on the other hand well, they don't really need a Intl Men's day, everyday for them is one. Perhaps many of you have been too busy looking at porn rather than noticing that oh, women in the middle east don't have a quarter of the rights that American women do, or that Japanese women still find it very difficult to find a job. But hey, who reads the news these days, right?

Ummm... I actually agree with the mouse to some degree. The reason we need an International Women's Day is to remind those of us who live in countries that have more or less achieved sexual equality that there are still places where women are concidered less than human. Unfortunately, though, thanks to the media most people seem to understand the day as "Buy women flowers and chocolate and she'll sleep with you" day.

/wank

And now I'll just go back to writing my Man-Hating Feminist thesis on Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
