Careful with the icons, the LJ Police will arrest you.
Although this happened in the angelinajolie fandom community, this is an icon wank, so I'm posting this here on OTF_Wank. It's a short one.

[info]p_tunia69 posts pictures of Angelina to the community stating very clearly that "If you want them, take them. I don't think it's fair to claim pictures that I didn't take myself... ; )"

The first response we see is from [info]angelwolf24 who would like credit for a couple of the icons that [info]p_tunia69 uses. Specifically the ones she made.

How silly of her.

[info]p_tunia69 has other ideas. She just doesn't "think it's right to credit someone for a photograph they did not take themselves. I mean, I could just crop those same pictures myself and you wouldn't know the difference. Please don't take offense, I just don't understand these "rules.""

[info]skyegazerlily jumps in with the weight of her opinion; "How does she truly know it's yours though and not someone elses?"

As does [info]rootchino; "I see no point in giving credit, the only thing it does is get illiterate 15 year olds who are friends of some random person that used your icon bothering you to personalize a dozen 'OC' icons for them." She is apparently impressed by a person's knowledge of HTML as seen by her comment, "Wow, you can use bold and italics. Do you know the underline one too?"

Oi.

See this icon? It took me about half an hour to make, but I sweated blood the whole time! If somebody took it, I would... I would... I would laugh at anybody stupid enough to take this icon. Geez.

Oh, sweet, sweet icon wank....

Yeah, I spend time making my icons, and I do a lot more to them than just cropping... but still. I'd only start getting annoyed if someone was like, "Yes, I sweated and slaved over this icon, it's totally ALL MINE OMG ISN'T IT BEAUTIFUL?" and THEN I'd be like, "Um, no, bitch." But if someone's just using without credit, they should go right on ahead. I don't give a rat's ass about that.

Btw, I DARE ALL Y'ALL TO STEAL MY ICON!

I once found someone using one of my icons - that I hadn't even met before. And when I asked where they got it, they said it was 'put up with a bunch of icons marked as free-for-the-taking'. Since that was all they said about it, I don't really know where they got it at all. O_o

But, hell, at least that person was *polite* about it. Geez, people get their knickers in a twist over the silliest things.

That was pretty much my reaction. I've seen people use my icons a couple of times. Usually they are nice about it. Honestly, I think it's flattering and don't care about credit.

This icon took less than five minutes to make. And I think it shows, don't you? ^_^

And here is the extent of my own talents. I've never asked for credit on my own icons because I don't have the time or the patience to be a One Inch Fellini.

However, I can understand folks who spend hours at it wanting credit and I'll happily give it to them. Especially those brave souls that tackle animations(getting each frame perfect, paring them down to size, smoothing the transitions, adjusting the color/brightness, finding the perfect font etc...) Gah! Too much for me.

Hee! "One Inch Fellini" sounds like it should be the name of either a rock band or a particularly underwhelming arthouse porn star.

*LOL* "One Inch Fellini" - That's the perfect name for an icon community.

I always give credit when I can and when I know from whence the icon came. If I don't know, I generally don't use.

I don't care about people using my icons. They are free for the taking.

I do not see what the big deal is. If someone asks for credit for their icon, just give it to them. No one will think you any less of a hardcore internet pro if you respectfully comply with such a request.

Remember...validating someone's internet existance prevents pseudocide.

Man, I love zee icon wank.

Yes, I make icons. And I like to think that they are rather pretty as well. But I don't give a flying fuck about credit. I make icons for the express purpose of fun and procrastination, not because OMG IM AN ARTEEST!!!11! That being said, if someone wants me to credit them for an icon they make, no problem. Those crediting keywords aren't gonna pop out of my computer screen and beat me with my mouse or anything.

The more people who use an icon I made, the more profitable was the time I spent on making it. Is that a weird idea or something?

However, icon steelerz who not only steal icons but also behave like wankers about it, are still -guess what?- wankers.

[info]rootchino:illiterate 15 year olds who are friends of some random person that used your icon bothering you to personalize a dozen 'OC' icons for them

How terrible. You know, writing 'no' actually doesn't require superhuman efforts. Even if writing No apparently does.

And now that I finally had a look at the actual wank I am kind of reliefed to see that [info]rootchino's html-remark looks pretty much like sarcasm.

And while there are quite a few wanker rewards waiting to be handed out, I call three medals for [info]belenen's efforts.

- bronze: for rolling the wank over into a new post
- silver: for screening comments ("take your arguments elsewhere, this is not a debate. Nice people's comments will be unscreened."), and
- gold: for posting an icon-crediting-tutorial. Seriously. No joke. She totally did that.

I think my favorite ones are the ones who make icons blanks, post them, and then say that nobody can alter them ... one person who posts to a community I'm on does this because she says she used to allow people to alter the blanks, and the results were horrifying. I mean ... what? Does she think that we're all going to point at her and say what a horrible icon-maker she is? Will it affect her resume? Will the world come to an end because someone slapped 'Bitch please' in an ugly font on top of one of her blanks?

I have never asked for credit on icons, except when I've used other people's artwork and I want to make sure they don't get bollocked for having the icon.

I dunno. I spend hours on icons, but *I* know they're mine, so why should I give a fuck if someone else claims them?

Rule #3: Sexual intercourse only on top of the trees
[info]bemysty
2005-03-13 03:53 am UTC (link)
I have to admit I simply do not get it. Where is the problem in giving a miniscule sort of credit if the creator asks for it? It's not as though maybe twenty letters more in your userpics would kill a kitten or some such (no matter the only thing a icon maker does is manipulating an image which originally doesn't belong to him/her in 99,5% of the cases, but...)

I'm making icons whenever the urge strikes and I'm not saying I'm any good at it (in fact, I'm not XD) and even though I generally don't care one bit who's using my icons and who's not, I tend to ask people to credit me somewhere. Not because I'm omg t3h 1337 or actually care about it but because it's common courtesy to credit works (in this case: manipulations on pictures) you did not do yourself, no matter whether it's the internet or not. Plus common courtesy is strangely absent from the internet anyway.

That, and my icon page is hosted on Geocities means I automatically lose at the internet anyway.

Ah, icon wank. The sarcasm in this skirmish is zesty and good with crackers. Mm.

Now, let me chime in, since I AM AN ICON ARTEEST LOLZ. Personally, I don't care whether people credit or not as long as they just pipe in and say "Hey, I like, so I took", but that rule's just there to boost my ego. I'll credit automatically on other peoples' icons, just because I'm obsessive-compulsive like that.

And no, my icons are not works of art. I might spend an hour or two on a few of them, but it's not like I'll throw a hissy if someone steals. I would get pissed if someone said my work was theirs, but that's cause, hey, it's mine and I'd like to think I'm entitled to a little wankiness.

I don't ask people to give credit for icons. Because honestly, it's not I really credit their original sources when I make something--I don't have Sammy or Ishiwatari credited for my Sol, or even the guy who zipped the sprite (Zazz :D). Most people don't.

I wouldn't want anyone to say, "I made this icon" if they didn't. But just by using it...I don't think there's any harm in it.
