It's only $200 NZ!
This isn't as weird or wanky as say Michael Jackson or Mel Gibson, but it certainly seemed a bit stupid to me.

Oscar winner Hilary Swank has hired a lawyer to appear in a New Zealand court to contest her $148US fine from airport customs for bringing an apple and orange into the country.

Hilary Swank in Kiwi airport bust

Now as anyone whose flown into New Zealand, or Australia knows it's not something they spring on you at the airport, you get ample warning on the plane with a snazzy video and a customs declaration form, and you are provided with a bin to throw anything away before you put that luggage over the line. And there are plenty of signs.

I was witness to one particularly amusing disagreement between a German woman and a customs official in Auckland Airport because she refused to dump her apple, it took about 10 minutes before the Official eventually fined her, the rest of us thought it should have happened on the spot, she simply refused to see the point.

It's only a small fine Hilary, don't be an idiot, NZ customs have a really good reason for the customs ban and fine, it's called more then half of the nation's GDP.

And it's not like you can't get fruit in NZ. Christ, $148 fine for $1.50 worth of fruit, just throw it away, how retarded can you be?

If I was silly enough to bring fruit into the country I'd pay the fine. And that $200 Kiwi is is certainly more valuable to me, I could imagine the judge laughing me out of the court.

I got the impression that Hilary was more down to earth then this.

Is it wrong of me to hope that the Kiwi authorities fine her a couple of extra thousand dollars in court fees?

But it's amusing no?

I have no idea. It's not like it's even remotely a cool thing, like say a rock-band smuggling weed into the country.

It's fruit, just stick in the bin, nobody is going to judge 'OMG, did you see that actress had the audacity to put an apple in her suitcase'!

Aren't the legal fees for contesting the fine going to be more than $148US? I mean, is she not going to be able to get jobs with this black mark on her record or something? "You're perfect for the part, Hillary, but I'm afraid we just can't hire a fruit smuggler."

It's not a big deal, she won't even be banned from entering the country again, although if I was in the NZ authorities I'd be tempted to ban her after this.

And considering how the film industry in NZ is picking up that might hurt.

I'm not entire sure what's worse.

The fact New Zealanders think that fruit smuggling is news-worthy, or that Hillary Swank thinks it's lawsuit worthy.

Celebrity wank is always newsworthy.

Sure, personally I'd just love it if Hilary Wank's freaking apple brought painted apple moth or whatever it is into the country and decimated our export crops. I can afford to watch the economy go down the toilet! No skin off my nose! Hell, I might just bring foot and mouth into the USA myself because it's such fun.

Except, you know, I'd have to visit a foreign country to get the foot and mouth because so far, we've managed to keep it out due to our *stringent biosecurity laws*...

Dear Hilary Swank,

People bringing fruit into this country precipitate insect spraying plane flights the kind of which confine me to the house lest the outside air have me rolling around as if I am being attacked by flesh-eating slugs. Don't do it, Hilary Swank.

Of course, if your defense is that the inutterable hideousness of Auckland Airport prevented you from logically dumping the fruit before you got to customs, I forgive you, Hilary Swank. That building looks like somebody drank a concrete milkshake and took a dump.

Luv,
Me

That's just silly. You break the law = you pay your dues.

There are big signs up at Stansted airport in Britain prohibiting importing dairy products from anywhere (foot-and-mouth, y'know), and I went up to a customs officer and told them I had omgcheese! from omgFrance! in my bag, and did they want it. And they laughed in my face. At least some countries take their customs seriously.

Though I was pleased to keep the cheese, cos it's a lot cheaper in France than England.

Bwah! My friend had the same problem in gun-toting Changi Airport in Singapore. She declared some flowering potplants her friend had given her to give her sister. The customs man looked at them and said "yes? They're very nice. WTF?"
