meta-wank
Some one posts a mildly amusing meta-quote on LJ about Chairman Kaga being a cross between Julia Childs and Inigo Montoya. "I always thought of Chairman Kaga as part Inigo Montoya-part Julia Childs. "Hell. My name Chairman Kaga. You killed my father. Prepare to eat most delicious apple fritter in the world." "

blackjackrocket makes a comment about a piece of trivia regarding Kaga and her icon.

potassiumman expresses his/her/its puzzlement and erdufylla attempts to clarify *squints* something about potassiumman's use of the japanese word "seiyuu"

Of course potassiumman takes offense to this and it disintigrates into a grammar-battle.

Honestly, potassiumman, how wanky was this?

"What this means, for the terminally stupid:

Wait, Kaga is a seiyuu? i.e., he's done voice acting! Which, apparently, he has!

Congratulations! You lose at the internet!"

In your first reply to the person? God, just STFU amd stop using random Japanese words then!

...

Apparently this wanklet is resolved in 3 or 4 posts but it just threw me for the sheer bitchiness right out of the gates.

You know, now that [info]blackjackrocket mentions it, he does sort of resemble Mr. Rush in Mystery Men.

If he ever whips out a carp skewered on a pointy metal finger...

*urgle*

To me, he's always been reminiscent of famed Mexican astrologist Walter Mercado, who really must be seen to be believed.

Also, Austin from Project Runway is so his American heir apparent.

Wow. That was the most amazing thing ever. It wasn't even really a grammar battle, even; at least, it shouldn't have been. I'm failing to see in what universe interpreting "Wait, Kaga's seiyuu?" as "the seiyuu of Kaga" is unjustified. Because when the sentence is grammatically correct as is, I don't know about everyone else, I read it as it's written, because I can't read minds. Man, sucks for me.

How I love it when people abuse Japanese... Where's that dropping a J-E dictionary on a kitten's head icon when ya need it?

Secondly, "Kaga['s/is] seiyuu" is a stylistic choice--seiyuu is Japanese, and Japanese nouns don't take articles (yes, in Japanese, and yes, we are speaking English,) however, between being a pedant and having my sentences not sound stupid (and really, appending the indefinite article 'a' to 'seiyuu' does come out sounding dumb, though that's a matter of opinion,) I will opt to take the route where only one person (you) misunderstands my meaning.

Damn.

The linguistic expertise just shines.

The rest of us understood her meaning, but that doesn't make her sound any less stupid.

While all she said was true, dropping the article in English lends an air of not understanding the meaning of the word at all.

Good to know she does, tho.

As a bonifide speaker of Japanglish, she's full of it (I'm totally meiwaku shita'd). Besides, in English, usually short phrases like "Kaga's seiyuu" or "potassiumman's pissed-in cornflakes of retardation" are read as possessives, simply because of the lack of article. Didn't s/h/it learn that you can't show off if no ones knows what you're on about?

Yeah, you can drop the article if you want to be awesome, but it always sounds stupid to me and can lead to the dreaded WTF!ambiguity. It's usually about making it sound good, and usually for comedic effect. I only do the "follow Japanese grammar rules" thing when it's a pluralization issue, such as "I like to read manga" rather than "I like to read mangas." And, uh, when I'm speaking my butchered Japanese.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

More as I'm bored.

Plus the language substitution is only for the word, seiyuu. If you look at the pure English of it, it's "Kaga is a voice actor." As you are just replacing [voice actor] with [seiyuu], the rest of the English should be the same. Unless s/h/it's replacing [a voice actor], but that would just be kinda stupid. Somewhat like the whole argument.

It's Aya, one of the guitarists from the Japanese J-Rock/visual kei band Psycho le Cemu. Aya is also a man. I've heard the voice. Heh.

I'm just a little sad that Japanese men make hotter women than I do.

Can't say much else to that but "word."
My Japanese is so bad... In Japan, it was more along the lines of "noun, adjective, verb, you connect the dots" than actual sentences.

Oh, I've been there, though I don't have the T-shirt yet. I can converse and understand quite well, but a lot of it seems to be... special grammar. The longer the sentence, the more my brain stalls, apparently.

Lots of arm-waving also helps.
