I made a doody!
Courtesy of Big Big Truck's latest update: Laura K. Pahl Is a Plagiarist.

Featuring academic (dis)honesty, accusations of vigilante justice, bizarre recurring analogies to pedophilia (WHAT.), and advice concerning the legality of profits from fake term papers from qualified INTARWEB LAWYERZ.

Good times.

EDIT: Too much wank for one thread; part deux. Thanks, mousie!

I... errr... I once made up a handful of citations for a paper on the importance of sexuality in dystopic literature. Silly me, I thought that was SO bad, and that my whole career would be over if I was caught. Now I see I should have just had someone write the whole damned thing for me.

Well, okay, maybe not.

Hmmm. I *once* cheated on a 5th grade spelling test, and in highschool I helped someone *else* cheat on an AP exam, but other than that I've been clean.

I fondly remember a tenth grade science test where the entire class helped everybody else cheat. Only one girl got caught, and even then all the teacher did was take away her crib notes and her test paper, and give her an identical clean one. Oh, happy childhood memories.

But I still had to write out all the work myself.

I cheated on a spelling test once, in either third or second grade. One of the words we were supposed to spell was up on a poster hanging in the classroom, in plain view, and it happened to be one I usually had some trouble with.
I think I may have helped someone else cheat on a quiz in like, middle school or something. I don't really remember, though.

Once in fourth grade, we had to take the stupidest test ever. And I looked at someone else's paper for one of the answers. A minute after I turned it in, I felt guilty, so I went back to my teacher and asked if I could have it back, intending to change it back to the wrong answer. She yelled at me- "Why, did you see somebody's paper on the way back to your desk???"

And there have been a few instances of using Wikipedia and claiming the info to be from other sources (real sources that I did get some info from, of course). And once I made up answers on an interview assignment because I hated the interviewee and my essay wasn't long enough.

I tried to cheat on a Japanese quiz once, by looking at the paper of the girl across from me who. I learned two things from the experience:

(1) Cheaters never prosper.

(2) Never try to read hirigana upside-down.

I've been accused of plagiarism by several teachers in my high school when I wasn't plagiarizing at all (and if I cared to argue my case, I was told the charges could have been dropped, but I was too pissed off at the assholes to even bother), so does that count?

For even more wank on this topic, try the MeFi thread: 386 COMMENTS. Christ on a stick. This afternoon there were only 150-odd and I still thought that was insane.

The parts I was able to get through include wank on the meaning of the word "plagiarism", and wank on who of the two participants was wankier. Which is kinda like meta-wank.

For my part, I can't help but feel the whole thing is a huge set-up, that either Nate's lying or Laura was trolling and didn't really need the paper. Anyway. Love the way it got the whole. fucking. internet pissed off.

Also, because he doesn't know who's who anymore, the guy has changed all occurrences of her name (originally "Laura K. Pahl") to "Laura K. Krishna". ...Of course, he didn't change the pictures of checks with her name, or the actual URLs, or the titles of the posts.

I hope you're happy, Nate. You completely ruined my life. Not only am I being kicked out of school, but the Dean of Students personally whipped the crap out of me with a length of garden hose. My landlord burned down his own building just so I'd be homeless. I'd sue you for this, but I was told I won't have the right to sue in U.S. courts after I am deported tomorrow. And just when I was about to finally get my heart transplant!

Honestly, what was that girl thinking? ...I hate to post anonymously, but holy fiznizzle! I used to know that guy. In college. As in, was at drunken parties with, for a few years knew the aforementioned Nate Kushner. He used to write for PSU's humor magazine, "Phroth," as well as plays for "No Refund Theatre" at same bloated University. Last I heard, he was at the American Comedy Institute after graduation.

Anyway, I haven't looked through the whole thing yet, but it could certaintly all just be a joke. Many the websites, interviews, articles, etc. Nate was involved with were tongue in cheek. He didn't take much seriously.

Assuming this is real, what really gets me is how darn stupid most plagiarists are. It's as if they think, "La la la, I will get information from the Internet and NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW."

Yeah, well, the papers they can "create" or find in a minute using Google, I can also find in a minute using Google. *is a freshman comp teacher in college who does not like plagiarists*

Of course, sometimes they do the work for me, like the student who forgot to take out the underlined hyperlinks from her homework, or the student who went from "Owen's 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' is powerful" to descriptions of the "pyrotechnics of his poetry." They must think that I skim the essays. It's the only explanation.

The metafilter meta-wank (heh) was great though:

"Ha ha! She sucks!"
"No! He sucks too, not as bad as she does."
"I agree he was too mean!"
"Hel-lo? Can someone say 'blogging* for attention'? Looks like someone is trying too hard to be Mr. Funny."
"What is wrong with you? She totally deserved it!"
"You guuuuys, stop calling her a plagiarist, she didn't even!"

*OT, but one of JF's suggestions for the correct spelling of "blogging" is "bonging".
