The one where everyone misunderstands the question
Knitting wank and feminism wank collide over at our friendly neighbourhood knitting community when trillian42 asks the question, "What is your view/interpretation of knitting as a feminist activity?"

The sane replies far outnumber the wanky ones, so I'll point you directly to the following:
Asking that question makes you sexist and homophobic!
You are a bigoted chauvenist! [sic]

Small, but I found the knee jerk responses quite amusing.

What's all this "you can't be a feminist if you're not a woman" static?

Also, holy overreaction, Batman!

Gay, I may be, but truth be told, there's still a penis attached. And most days, there's also knitting needles in my hand.

Wouldn't that chafe?

I'll never understand... why people... feel the need... to abuse poor... ellipses... in such a cold, heartless... manner...

I think, they're almost as, badly abused as the, comma. And let's not allow ourselve's to forget the apo'strophe.

Some days, I want to start a support group for abused punctuation marks. It makes my heart hurt, I tell you.

Not only is it well worth the reading, but when strapped to a copy of THE TRANSITIVE VAMPIRE, it makes an excellent bludgeoning instrument should gentle correction prove fruitless.

Indeed. Filthy apostrophes. No wonder they're always showing up where they aren't needed/wanted - they're actually voyeurs, hoping to get a glimpse of some hot plural action.

The connotations of feminism to me has always been anti-male, something that women can do that is strictly for women and men can't have any part in. It's always been presented to me as an anti-patriarchal thing to keep males out of the female world. To me, feminism has always seemed so negative because I have a penis, and therefore can't possibly understand what it's like.

So...he's a gay man who gets all his information about feminism from Rush Limbaugh?

He's helping break down my stereotypical perception of gay men as fun, socially-informed, and just generally lovely people. It's a learning experience.

How dare you bring your sexuality into this! I find that offensive, because I am female and feel left out have a fucked-up definition of male-on-male homosexuality which I shall now share with you!

The connotations of male gayness to me has always been anti-female, something that men can do that is strictly for men and women can't have any part in. It's always been presented to me as an anti-matriarichal thing to keep females out of the male world. To me, male gayness has always seemed so negative because I don't have a penis, and therefore can't possibly understand what it's like.

*sobs dramatically* Why? Why do you all have to be so goddamned exclusionary? IT'S ALL ABOUT LEAVING US GIRLS OUT, ISN'T IT? YOU SEXIST SNOBS!

I would just like to point out that during the Middle Ages, only men were allowed to join Knitters' Guilds.

Also, pink and red, as the colours of flesh and blood, were considered strong, manly colours. Blue, traditionally the colour of the Virgin's Veil, was a properly modest colour for a woman.

feminist does not imply female.

Uh, yes it does. What you mean to say, [info]nicolegray, is "feminist does not NECESSARILY INCLUDE female". Because, sorry, the first image that leaps to mind when someone says feminist is... a woman. Surprise.

Actually, for the most part things are very reasonable. The second-largest thread in there concerns someone who posted a PETA article about merino sheep asking "Is this true?" And a number of people saying, basically, "Not really," and everyone coming to the conclusions that "PETA overreacts" and "okay, good, I like merino wool anyway so I'll ignore this."

It's fine, really.
