More fat activist wank:
Because they are very, very amusing.

Yahoo posts picture of a fat woman coming out of a cookie store. Impotent rage splurts all over my monitor. World in harmony again.

That's horrific. I wonder how long they had to wait before a fat woman came out?

I'm guessing they sat through a long line of thin people to get that shot.

I'm sure the photographer spent hours praying futilely that the one obese cookie-eater in the city would drop by that day. I mean, it's the only logical explanation for this atrocity. And stuff.

I am bloody sick of the distorted lips/eating watermelon in the briar patch from news organizations.

...come again?

Of course the photographer is following directions, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't harass the photographer. Somebody following directions is still responsible, and the tactic of harassing the harasser relies on making people think twice before they just do what's convenient the next time. Ideally, it should be in someone's long term career interest not to do this kind of work.

MEIN FUHRER, I HAVE THE ACCOMPANIMENT TO YOUR HUMAN-INTEREST PIECE. IT IS A FINE ARYAN PUPPY OF THE PROPER WEIGHT AND COLORATION. I BELIEVE HIS NAME IS "SPRITZEL".

However, just as jews eat just about as many babies as gentiles, fat people eat about the same number of cookies as thin people.

1. Fat people do in fact eat more cookies. They just think they don't.
2. Bitch, please.

Their major beef with the picture is that it cuts off the woman's face, thereby dehumanizing her and sending the message that fat people are inhuman. Oddly enough, no one has objected to this image, which by that logic would suggest that medical technicians are both subhuman and blurry. But, y'know, if they do that they can't evoke the Nuremburg trials, now can they?

Life is so much better when you get to use Godwin's Law before breakfast.

on the one hand, that picture irritates the living fuck out of me b/c the cookies juxtaposition is just immature and meanspirited and generally false, given that nearly all Americans eat way too fucking much, and badly, and are sedentary.

On the other hand, STOP TALKING ABOUT NAZIS. (Says the girl who shouted 'heil cheney' at a protest this evening. But that was different.)

I do rather like the phrase, "just as jews eat about as many babies as gentiles..." I think I shall start dropping it randomly into all my arguments.

That's right up there with the protesters in Boston who greeted John Ashcroft with the Imperial Death March.

So,um, what the hell is this baby eating Jews thing? I don't understand where it comes from.

Other than that, well, I found the picture rather irritating too. There are a number of factors that can cause obesity - not just by eating cookies. Humph.

Among the many heinous rumors spread about Jews is the chestnut that they make dough (I believe for Purim?) flavored with the blood of either Christian or Muslim babies (depending on who's doing the rumor-spreading).

As for the picture, given that the article accompanying it was discussing how come we have so many fat Americans these days, and given that most of the blame is laid at the feet of the head-sized cookie industry, I don't think it's out of line. Speaking for myself, I know that I am fat because of cookies and other delicious chocolate-flavored things and a lack of ability to not eat same, so I don't have a problem with the picture either way.

As for the briar-patch comment, I think they meant racial stereotypes - but...I don't really get how that pic = racial stereotype, so okay!

Oy... Hello, people, they cut off her head because they probably didn't get her permission to be photographed. Way to read WAY, WAY too much into a common news technique, idjits.

Righteous froth, righteous froth, OMG, righteous fr-*yawn*

I'm sorry, I have even less patience than I have wit for these kinds of freakouts. If it's such a bad thing to define people by their weight, perhaps you should stop doing the same thing to yourselves, too.

Just a thought.

Gah, fat!wank. I've been bit on the ass by this stuff before -- and of course, I got called a Nazi too.

1. Fat people do in fact eat more cookies. They just think they don't.

Hell, yes. Has anyone seen Discovery's documentary on obesity? (I thought it was very well done, since it touched upon various medical factors for obesity without downplaying the role behavior plays.) In it, they interviewed a man who fell into the "need a flatbed truck and a crane" category of morbid obesity. He honestly believed that he ate the same amount of food as healthy people. Of course, they juxtaposed this with an interview with his doctor, who said that he ate a lot.

But suggesting that fat people need to eat less isn't nice, or something.

There are exceptions. I'm just barely hovering around the normal/overweight line of the BMI charts...and I weigh an amount that sounds terrible for my height, to me anyway, but I have a large frame and I eat less than a lot of people I know, AND exercise.

I basically deal, and understand obesity reports probably aren't talking about me.

You know what else? A lot of thin people eat a lot of food - more than some fat people - and yet they're thin. Interesting, isn't it?

If you think cookies are causing the "obesity" "problem" in America, I suggest you do some more investigating.

The problem is, no one distingusihes between fat and 'fat' anymore. If Jerry Springer needs to come with a helicopter to remove you from your house, yes you're obese, yes you're unhealthy, and yes you should probably have surgery and stop eating so damn much and do whatever else is necessary to get back into the land of the functional.

But if you're carrying an extra pound or ten in the hip/ butt region, that's just a common-sense preparation for the next big famine.

hey,
I have been researching this a bit online,
Chk this out:
http://www.uslibts.org/pic-law-we.htm

Apparently what they have shown is sufficient to sue them on -since the woman is not a voluntary model. You can't photograph random people and write up crap about them!
what do you think?
Is that actionable? If so who is to take the action? Do you think only the woman in q would be able to take action or could we as a community of people offended by the pic?

This makes my brain hurt. There's nothing to identify the woman. What do they intend to sue over every depiction of fat people in all media sources?

dear lord... I am a fat person who actually does have one of those 'get out of jail free' metabolic disorders (hypothyroidism, to be exact). However, you know... you have to eat and excerise within your means. Nope, I can't eat lots 'o cookies and stay slim like that skinny ass, eats like a horse friend we all have. Oh well, that's life. Still, it isn't impossible for me to keep fit when I really work at it. And that, boys and girls, that is the key.

You gotsta live within those Laws of Thermodyanamics. Do strength training to increase your muscle mass and thereby burn more calories if you are worried about a metabolic drop (and you'll get one if you don't). Consume less energy than you expend. Expend more energy than you consume. Most of the fat people I have known (and I am related to a whole extended family of 'em), are LYING when they say they eat less than thin people. Lots 'o studies agree with me on this one. Yeah, maybe that one friend with super fast metabolism who can put away 5 cheese burgers a day and not gain an ounce, but... geeze. The average sized person is not 'that friend'.

Now, before anyone gets on my case, I am a fatty myself with medically diagnosed metabolic disorder. I've been every size from 6 to 20, but even with my 'issues', I can be healthy when I work at it.
