Barnes & Noble Nazi sez: No Meetup For You!
Nothing like good local wank to make a shitty day slightly better.

Over in the Philadelphia LJ, everything seems set for a Meetup at the Barnes & Noble Friday night. That is, until [info]megansbook throws a shit fit:

I would like to speak with you personally about this event as an employee and Community Relations Assistant at this B&N, I coordinate events. As Far as I know we are not slated to host this event.

I would urge you to contact me directly so we can discuss this further.

There is much WTF? to follow in the comments, grammar wank, and even an appearance by [info]rfjason (who doesn't even live on the same COAST as the meetup) before the whole thing gets moved to Borders.

I'm sure the wank will continue for the rest of the week. Stay tuned!

If I still lived in Philly, I would so show up at that B&N, preferably wearing only a tie.

Best comment: In my spare time, I also commit comma splices.

That is one of those grammar things I've never been able to understand. Wanna clue me in?

Happy to oblige.

Those are two separate sentences, which she has incorectly joined together with a comma. That's the dreaded "comma splice." If she'd written I would like to speak with you personally about this event as an employee and Community Relations Assistant at this B&N. I coordinate events. that would be fine.
Or if she'd written I would like to speak with you personally about this event, because as an employee and Community Relations Assistant at this B&N I coordinate events. that would also be fine (because the second "sentence" has been transformed into a subordinate clause).

Ohhhh, I get it.

Wow, my English teachers made that sound so much more complicated than it really was.

Thanks.

I think they can also be joined together with a semicolon or a dash(or by putting the last bit in parentheses, although that--or the dash--would make it more of an aside), but I'd hesitate to show any of the more complicated bits of punctuation to someone who'd use a comma in that manner.

Yes, because a semicolon (or dash) does the same thing--joins two bits that can stand alone as sentences. I lurve the semi-colon, though, so I agree with you: no semi-colons for her.

We must keep them safe from people who wouldn't understand the lovely semicolons, and would only abuse them.

*peers at the sentence again*

Not that it detracts from the funny, but she might have meant to punctuate more like this:

I would like to speak with you personally about this event. As an employee and Community Relations Assistant at this B&N, I coordinate events.

Just because the whole, "As a [unnecessary information about the person], I [action]" structure is more inherently pompous. ;)

I hope the B&N employee's boss sees that and smacks her upside the head for losing business.

Though I know with Borders there's a certain advantage of actually scheduling your events with them cause then they give you 10% off drinks and stuff.

Incidentially, anyone see [info]megansbook carry the wangst into another comm?

It looks like it was just posted; no comments yet. Or else the other comm members are smart enough to ignore her.

While megansbook is/was reacting badly, I can kind of see her point. While working for Bunns and Noodle, I've seen many people that are looking for informal meetups that I had no idea where happening. This is fine if it's just a group of people meeting in the cafe, but I've had a group of homeschoolers get very demanding (ordering me to turn the instore music off, making a mess on the stage area in the children's department, reading lots of books and not even making an attempt at shoving the mess into a corner, etc). And there have been other groups that get snippy when they ask "Where's the "Thusnsuch" meeting?" and get blank stares.

So yes, megansbook = dramamonger, but it's still generally better form to let businesses know if you're doing meetups with groups of people... plus it gives them the chance to give you free stuff, if you make up a plausible sounding reason :)
