Bitty little [info]dot_cattiness spat. It's cute and I want to hug it. ([info]dot_cattiness, for the uninitiated, is a community for posting cutting remarks, such as this utter gem.)

[info]kightp posts:

So, you're against eating lamb - unless it comes from a particular Greek restaurant.

What would you call that? Situational vegetarianism?

This sets off [info]catamorphism. The comment thread is short enough that you can read the whole thing.

*rolls eyes at [info]catamorphism*

What, the girl slipped, fell, and landed on a particularly tasty plate of Greek lamb? It's called impulse control, genius. Most grownups have it.

Two years ago when I converted to Judaism, I had to stop eating pork. It's really not that difficult.

(I like the mental image of someone forcing her to eat delicious lamb, though.)

Is it hard not to mix meat and dairy?

Yeah. I mean, veal is delicious. The few times I had it, I LOVED it. Since I learned how veal is raised, I do not eat it. It is a sacrifice, because I love tender steak, but, it's not THAT difficult. And it really wouldn't have much meaning otherwise. Sheesh people!

Ever tried to stop doing something you enjoyed, whether that was because it was bad for you or because you had ethical objections to it, and not been able to?

Damn that heroin-stuffed lamb.

And those crack-laced Oreos.

Hell, most children have it. I was eight when I found out what veal and lamb were about and I have never let it grace my lips since then.

I don't even remember what veal tastes like. I do remember, however, seeing that horrific ad in National Geographic with the veal calf locked in the tiny pen... *shudder*

...bwuh?

*tries to get head around catamorphism's logic*

Sooo... if this person doesn't eat the really good stuff, she'll obviously go around eating it all the time to compensate?

What?

*head asplode*

Don't try to make too much sense of it--it's the desperate logic of someone trying to justify to themselves an ever-narrowing parcel of beliefs.

Eating lamb is unethical. Except this one case.

....buh?

Unless the lamb is included in, say, fruit juice, catamorphism has no case.

(The fruit juice thing isn't as far-fetched as you might think. I was drinking a bottle of Fuse once, and only after I drank it did I realize it had, of all things, fish gelatin in it.

Check your labels, kids!)

*nodnods* A local milk company here uses vitamins from fish to fortify their milk. *shrugs* It never tasted fishy to me, but whatever.

I usually check labels on foods, because I'm allergic to nuts--once I was checking the ingredients on a package of cookies, and those had FISH GELATIN in them. Fish. Cookies. Not a pair that immediately comes to mind.

The reason why I started to buy kosher food long before I thought about converting to Judaism seriously. If it has a hechsher on the label, the label is accurate, and it doesn't, you know, have stuff that makes no sense in it.

For instance, fish in cookies.

Or, once I bought the non-kosher frozen manicotti because they were cheap, and there was BEEF EXTRACT in MARINARA SAUCE.

Hello? Marinara sauce is usually vegetarian...

Gelatin is my BANE. It's in a ridiculous number of things - try finding yogurt without it! Hello, no hooves in my snacks, please.

I had lamb from the carving board at Easter because I decided I was going to celebrate by eating the cutest animal I could.

Oh, what's so wrong with situational ethics, though? As long as someone didn't declare, "Eating lamb is ABSOLUTELY EVIL," I don't see what's hypocritical about generally avoiding it but enjoying it once in a while.

Also, one of the snarking posters said:

I stopped eating meat 16 years ago, cold turkey.

I mean, to be fair, that's a lot easier to quit. Lamb is much tastier than cold turkey.
