And I come bringing POPE WANK.
I said in [info]clairvoyantwank that I was surprised at the lack of "OMG RATZINGER IS THE POPE!" Wank...

Guess what... I was proved wrong. Thank you, [info]funkyhelix...

unreason:
Is it the Panzer Pope?

Is the Panzer Pope one of the lost Transformers?

Panzer Pope....TRANSFORM!

docgonzo: Yup. Gotta be God's rottweiler.

I hope its Kang! He already has his Popemobile!

I have to go with Cardinal Law.

In which case the Catholic Church in America dies immediately.

Geez, all this noise over some bishop. They elect bishops every year, you know-- this one's not a big deal. Just 'cause he's the bishop of Rome, everybody gets their panties in a bundle. Rome isn't the center of the universe.

The 77 year old Ratzinger was John Paul's deputy for theology as head of the powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Ratzinger was the author of the a 2003 Vatican directive to priests around the world calling for a proactive stand to stop governments from legalizing same-sex marriage and for a repeal of those those already on the books that give rights, including adoption, to gay couples. (story)

The 12 page document called on Catholic bishops and lawmakers to oppose the legalization of same-sex unions.

Ratzinger opposes contraception and the use of condoms to combat HIV/AIDS. He advocates a diminished role for women in the Church and has called for mandatory celibacy for priests

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

I swear to you by all that is holy, I will never refer to him by any other name than 'Pope Hitler'.

I'm going with the Soprano-esque "Joey the Rat."

I wouldn't hold being a member of the Hitler Youth against him, but the bastard and his brother have the temerity to say that had no option but to be Nazis. I'd say thousands of Germans who bravely chose the dangerous alternative prove that the man is a scummy liar.

Plus, his crusade to wipe out the Church's efforts to help the plight of the poor alone has saved him a toasty place in the hell that he believes in.

Fuck the Pope. Fuck-fuck-FUCK the pope. NWA needs to reform again.

So now that any joy of possibly picking a good pope has been sucked dry, how does this sit with the Malachy prophecy thing.

I didn't know there was a Nigerian pope candidate. I wish he'd have gotten the job. Then my niece would call him the chocolate pope and that just sounds too delicious to pass up.

Somehow, I am completely unsurprised that there is wank, despite the fact that Ratzinger has been Pope for ABOUT FIVE HOURS.

I was all for electing a more progressive Pope, but come on, what did you expect? Is everyone really that shocked that they chose a conservative cardinal? Considering this is a group of old Catholic men, almost all of whom were appointed by John Paul II (who, let's remember, was not exactly all "yay condoms and married priests and women in the church!"), was anyone really and truly convinced that there was going to be a giant reform movement?

We're not quite there yet, people.

Wasn't surprised in the least either, dear church mouse.
I always thought the rat was already appointed shadow pope and steering things the last years, while JPII was still breathing.

Eh, I will give JPII credit where credit was due -- he got kudos in my book for saying that Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection was a-okay with the Church and that the Church really shouldn't've given Galileo such a hard time (and should've given Hitler a harder time). Baby steps, I suppose, but better than nothing.

But, seriously, in general the older you are, the more conservative you are. You tell a group of older gentlement ot elect the best leader they can, and most likely they are going to choose someone like them. Eventually, all those young radical priests will become old set-in-their-ways priests and things will start to change. Maybe.

Is it bad that the first thing I considered after hearing "ultra-conservative pope elected" and that he's 78 was: 'Hmm... JPII was only 84 when he kicked the can, maybe we'll get some divine intervention for the Rat?'

Well, if we listen to Malachy, we've got about 4-5 years.

Honestly, I think the cardinals are sort of expecting a short papacy. They were supposedly looking for an interim Pope.

There's wank exploding on a couple of blogs I read about the new pope. It's basically people shocked, nay, horrified that a conservative pope was elected, which leaves me saying "Bzuh? You expected something else?"
