When Intellectuals Attack!
So honestly, what is average, anyway? Is average necessarily stupid? If a group of average people screw up in college in answering a simple question, are they considered stupid?

And call you still claim to be an intellectual if you can't even correctly spell in your initial post, claiming the average really are stupid? And can you enrage an entire community of debaters so much by claiming everyone in it is equally intellectual and elitist?

A single person is none too bright. Get a group of them together to work on something--particularly if they barely know each other--and they're not going to produce much worth reading.

Debate is the community of a thousand boners, ain't it?

If you actually want to stand there and count, you'll find that that's most likely the case.

Fuck you. I'm a dragon.

~snerk~ ah, a true gem of rhetoric there--when at a loss to prove one's own superiority, make fun of otherkin! has that been Godwinized yet? or possibly a corollary of a similar law re: furries?

I'd make a motion to create a new law just for that, but I've already got one, so I'm just avoiding egotism.

Well, "when in doubt, randomly attack the other person's subculture/fandom/interests" is a staple of online asshattery. It's not just otherkin. I'd say they're probably getting hit hard lately there because of the recent thread, but the "Yeah, but you're [blank]! ahahahaahha!" is nothing new.

was the person she was replying to with that one of the otherkin folk? I thought it was less an attack than a sad attempt to invoke solidarity "well, at least I'm funny, not crazy like those OTHER (insert your favorite PRE-verts here), ha ha ha." which, yes, also a tried-and-true disguise for lack of a real argument.

If you go back a few days, you can probably find the debate post that comes from. Some guy who's otherkin had a post where he was asking how his belief that he is spiritually a dragon is any better than someone's belief in God.

I wonder... Is she using "average" in the most general way possible, or is she using specifics?

I mean, we're all "average" or "below average" at something. In my case, I am "below average" when it comes to mathematics (I can't calculate formulas with big numbers without resorting to a calculator). In that sense, I am stupid.

But what about when I'm being assessed in an area in which I am good? Like say, art. To some, I am above average. Does that make me smart?

Stupidity and intelligence are all relative at some point, and one example of lousing things up does not make someone stupid, nor does getting a perfect grade in a test make you smart.

It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess...

Wow. Way to provide hardly any useful context and make sweeping assumptions from a minuscule sample group. That's what I think of when I think of 'elite intellectuals'.

Is debate always overrun by trolls, or has it just gotten really bad in the last few days?

Pretty much. You can go shift through some older entries and find that it really is always that bad.
