It seems that the State House in SC passed a bill making gamecock fighting a felony, while tabling a bill protecting victims of domestic violence.

According to Rep. Altman (R-Dist. 119-Charleston, SC), who was in favor of the cockfighting bill, but not the domestic violence one:

"People who compare [cockfighting and domestic violence] are not very smart and if you don't understand the difference, Ms. Gormley, between trying to ban the savage practice of watching chickens trying to kill each other and protecting people's rights in CDV statutes, I'll never be able to explain it to you in a 100 years ma'am."

I'm not even going to TALK about how pissed off that makes me without horking up something vital, so I'll talk about something related.

I don't think I have a lot of problems with cockfighting/dogfighting. Weed out the cruel practices like spurs and gunpowder, but let it go and let it exist. Animals do it naturally. I mean shit, people get paid lots of money to kick the asses of other people--even to clock them in the head in front of everyone else. We call it professional sports. But the second we change the fighters to something that doesn't match our genetic code enough to breed with it, it's a crime against nature? Someone has not seen two dogs fighting in the woods.

Breeding and training animals so that they rip the shit out of each other isn't cruel? These animals are forced into fights far more vicious than they would usually encounter in the wild. Roosters trained for cock fighting are too aggressive to live in anything but cages. Dogs trained for fighting are dangerous to other dogs and people, and usually live in miserable conditions.

Besides, it doesn't matter that dogs fight in the woods. That's really beside the point. Animals starve to death in the woods, but that's no excuse for me to starve my cat.

Problem one with cock/dogfighting: It is often paired with other illegal and harmful-to-society activity. Making it a felony gives the law greater advantage to cracking down on the greater illegal activities it associates with.

Problem two: Severe. Animal. Abuse. It takes something natural and deliberately twists and dements it to the point of obscenity. Altman may be an ass, but he was correct in comparing it to the Colosseum. It is a violent and harmful twisting of nature.
Additionally, when a human is trained in boxing, their fists are registered as weapons, much as if they owned a gun. They can be jailed for using their "weapons" against another. Animals trained, no, perverted for fighting rings are unable to consciously control their excessive aggression and are therefore a huge threat to society. Boxers = controlled threats, dogs/roosters bred to be violent = ticking bombs.

Using "nature" as though it makes your argument more sound makes it logically unsound.

Animals fight in the wild: true.

However animals do not normally fight to the death, in prolonged bloody battles as they are made to do in dogfights/cockfights.

Animals do not fight in enclosed areas with a single locked door as the only possible exit.

Animals in the wild normally give signs they've given up and the other animal will back off. You don't see this in fights, because what humans want is for their animal to maim the other animal as much as possible/kill it in order to secure a win, so they egg (no pun intended) their animals on, encouraging them to kill the other animal.

And wild animals are not kept in a cycle where those that win are sewn up only to find themselves in a ring again having to battle to stay alive.

I'm sorry but your argument has more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.

Dogfights/cockfights are a perversion of nature. There's nothing natural about a pair of stainless steel spurs being strapped to the legs of a gamecock at all.

And there's no way to make it "humane" - even if you could prevent injuries to the animals you can't change the effects it has on their demeanor.

An animal that's rewarded for being aggressive will only continue to show aggression because that's what the humans want.

And animals like that are nothing but a liability to anyone around it, because you just. cannot. trust. it. not to bite another person/animal witout provocation.

(I'm sure you'd be all for "humane" dogfighting if a dog that's trained to fight "humanely" ends up mauling a child to death because it thought "aggressive behaviour" was "proper behaviour" around humans...)
