In which the phrase "phonetically isomorphic" is statistically probable.
I am so disappointed that no one has posted this yet. It's small, but incredibly amusing.

Conlangs is a LiveJournal community for people who like to create fake languages. It's not as relentlessly academic as the Conlang mailing list, but it's still full of nerds.

With no sense of humor.

shatteredgloom makes a post about his/her new conlang, "Pak Chui":

A little bit about Пак Чуи
I have created a graceful and lilting language called "Пак Чуи". It's an agglutinave language whose grammar is loosely based on Finnougric languages, and whose lexicon is drawn from Inupiaq and liturgical Coptic. For its orthography I chose florid Bānglā (বাংলা) script. Like Russian, it lacks articles and the verb "to be" (though I am considering replacing it with the equals sign, whose tense would be modified by diacritical marks). It is gender non-specific but uses different pronouns dependent on race. Here are some samples.

[...]
I think the rest is also pretty funny, since it pokes fun at conlang(er) stereotypes. But some of the members of Conlang apparently don't realize it's a joke even though it's bleedingly obvious.

Unfortunately, the moderator, Saizai, freezes commenting before anyone can commit any internet atrocities. (He always does this. I think I'm beginning to hate him.)

Edit: Need I mention that while shatteredgloom's obviously fake user info says s/he's thirteen, I think this is about as likely as me being the long-lost heir to the throne of Togo?

This quote actually made me snort out loud whilst reading it. Needless to say, my family thinks I'm insane.

ShatteredGloom : (when asked to give "an IPA tranlsiteration")
Impossible, even with the IPA. Even if just an approximation. Speaking Pak Chooie requires gruesome flapping of screeching alien vocal cords, out of our human hearing range. Terrestrial beings are frustratingly incapable of synthesising its godless phonemes without complex voice modulation apparatus.

Hee!! *loves*

It was the "It's for an avant garde action movie with a multidimensional collective hero. But you wouldn't get it, 'cos you're a plebe" that got me.

Was actually wondering if this would show up here. What I get for skimming any 'I'm gonna show off my language' post on the Conlang community, since they are usually boring -- I go back during work and I'm like 'Woah!'.

I would have missed the post entirely if saizai wasn't an anal retentive mod. Apparently, he thought it was necessary to post THREE TIMES about it. (Twice in the comments, once as a top-level post.)

grammar is loosely based on Finnougric languages
Why does it often seem like every linguist out there is creaming his/herself over the grammar of my mother tongue and its relative languages?

Not that it doesn't make me feel supremely cool, but it's just kind of weird. Tolkien based Sindarin's gramar on Finnish grammar so it's been hot ever since? I don't know.

Because Finno-Uggric languages are unusual? I'm not particularly interested in them myself, but I can see the appeal of studying a language that's so very not Indo-European.

The multitude of cases makes it look impressive, and to show that they know their Tolkien.
And since everybody "knows" that Finnish is supposed to be hard - thus the conlanger gets linguistic cred (ooh, based on difficult language! Must be a smart person!)

IANATolkienGeek but IIRC it's Quenya, not Sindarin, that derives some of its agglutinative grammar and phonetic structures from Finnish. As for why people are fascinated by Finnish -- heck, with the lovely case system and consonant gradation and the amusing lack of future tense and all, it's a linguistic joyride! :)

Yeah, I think you're right. I always get those two mixed up. Quenya is the older one and less used and slightly based on Finnish, yep.

Because the other conlangers laugh at people whose languages are just a code for English/their natigve language/whatever language they learned in school behind their backs?

Don't look at me, I wouldn't know Finnish from French.
