PP and Plan B...go!
Someone posts in [info]vaginapagina about a Planned Parenthood that is going to be offering Plan B pretty much hassle-free. The thread is pretty much making with the "yay!" until [info]bambenek comes along and confuses everyone. Or at least he confused me.

EDIT: It seems [info]bambenek has crossposted to several threads, and has also joined in a similar thread here in the [info]chambana community.

Best quote so far:

[info]muliebrity: You know, you're right. I'm not really prolife. I really want to KILL ALL TEH BAYBEEZ IN TEH WORLD.
No. I want to prevent unplanned pregnancies so that abortion doesn't even enter to picture. It's called being sensible. While you go and scream on your soapbox all day about the evils of EC, I'll spend my time educating women about birth control. I guarantee my method of creating the need for less abortions would be more effective than yours.

[info]bambanek: Maybe, but I guarantee my method will have women not being used as sex toys.

Why do you believe that women are worth nothing more that a recepticle of some random men's sperm? I guess maybe I have more respect for the equality and dignity of women then that.

[info]bambanek - his logic is not only not from earth, it is not even from this solar system!

They are violating the law by writing prescriptions for problems that don't exist yet.

*stares* Yeah, that one really makes sense.

Patient: I'm travelling abroad, and I was told to take some anti-malarials. Can I get a prescription for them?
Doctor: No, I'm sorry, we're not allowed to give any preventative medicine. Please come back when you're dying.

Or even better--

Patient: Doctor, I've been having some problems with the missus lately. You know what I mean, don't you?
Doctor: Explain.
Patient: I can't get it up anymore, Doc. Can I have some Viagra?
Doctor: Sorry, you'll have to come back when you're actually experiencing erectile dysfunction.
Patient: What, during sex?
Doctor: *grins evilly* Exactly.

Does that mean that I wouldn't be able to get my insulin if I'm not having problems with my blood-sugar when I see the doctor?

Or get my asthma medication when I'm not having an attack?

Sadly I think we're not putting enough time into finding a cure for Asshatness.

The way bambenek phrases things, you'd think it would be easy to get Plan B just about anywhere. Easy to say when you live in a college town such as Champaign. As this article illustrates, Plan B--and even regular birth control pills--can be extremely hard to come by in rural areas. It doesn't help that some of these towns depend a lot on Wal-Mart for everything, and Wal-Mart, for so-called "business reasons", won't stock Plan B.

From Bambenek's blog:

I have called Planned Parenthood and the woman who answered the phone confirmed this event is taking place sponsored by their education department. The problem is that EC in Illinois still requires a prescription. They COULD have a qualified person on hand to write those presecriptions but unless people are planning on scheduling their "accidents" on May 10th, it's clear they are putting these drugs in circulation for future use and not relating to any current issues. This is in complete disregard of the law. The notice itself makes clear this as well. In short, they are giving away this prescription drug for free without a prescription knowing full well it is going to be stockpiled. This is flagrantly illegal. The police have been notified. Here is contact info: [snip]

Rrright. I see where the disconnect is. He's assuming that:

1. Plan B is an emergency medication.

2. Plan B requires a prescription.

3. Therefore, Plan B should be prescribed only in the presence of an emergency.

In reality, all the prescription law means is that someone with the appropriate medical knowledge should oversee the dispensing of the drug to make sure that the woman knows how to take it and doesn't have any risk conditions. As several other people have pointed out, there are plenty of emergency drugs that are dispensed early as a preventive measure. Plan B is no different.

...Now can someone who's involved in the wank pound this into the asshat's skull? Possibly with a rusty firepick?

Sorry I have to get this out of my system

I'm using common sense. I don't think people are planning their condom breaks for May 10th.

People don't plan for condom breaks EVER!!!

Why why does this idiot not get that women want to plan ahead and be prepared in the event of an emergency? And that it is perfectly legal for them to do so. An emergency does not need to have happened or even be eminent for a person to plan for it. It's better to have Plan B there and ready in the event of an emergency, than to have the emergency and THEN get plan B(no matter how "easy" it is to get Plan B.

For some reason I keep thinking about a local mall that has signs near the door boasting about emergency defibrillators kept there(with staff trained to use them) So if a patron has a heart attack(you a time matters emergency) a defibrillator is right there rather than wait for an ambulance to come. Oh and btw right across the street from the mall is a hospital.

Does he think that women don't have sex very often? That's why it's a good drug to have on hand -- women, just like men, frequently have sex. And mistakes happen.

According to his logic, if you have asthma, you shouldn't have an inhaler on hand at all times, you should simply go to the doctor when you have an attack. Or something. Because seriously, lots of people have asthma who rarely use their inhalers -- but they're damn glad to have them on hand when needed.

He's just someone who's trying to use "OMG it's illegal!" talk so that he sounds more logical. Pro-lifers often use meandering legal tactics since making something inconvenient is much easier than making it illegal.

His incessant commenting makes me want to scream.

Probably because he's taking "illegal without a prescription" to mean "you have to REALLY NEED IT RIGHT THEN or it's an ILLEGAL prescription!!" My favorite parts are where he makes analogies about EC being like morphine and antibiotics, yet he says it's NOT like having an inhaler on hand in case you have an asthma attack.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]the_clansmen
2005-05-03 09:36 pm UTC (link)
I mean... he seems to be ignoring the fact that you can't just write prescriptions for morphine because it's incredibly addictive. And you can't just write prescriptions for antibiotics because then people will misuse them and we'll end up with Super!Bacteria strains taking over the world.

And... yeah. [brain explodes]

I think they are telling on themselves than anything else. They really believe that if people are allowed to have sex without reproduction, that they will gorge on it like it's going out of style. Much how like anorexics are afraid if they start eating again, they will never stop.

They don't trust other people's small still voices and figure they have to be the big obnoxious voice telling how it must be.
