I'm not closed minded, anime is teh lame.
So, Howl's Moving Castle is a recent release (in Japan and not heathen locales) of acclaimed Japanese director Miyazaki. It is coming to the United States, to the delight of many fans of anime and Miyazaki alike!

However all is not well in IMDB message board land.

It seems prettykitti is a big fan of the book, but not so much of the movie (well, at least the idea of it, she doesn't want to see it, not even for 99 cents):
Whoever decided to make this into a japanese animated cartoon is an idiot and I hope somthing happens and it can't be released.

Anyways. So people reason, the Iraqi war and American Idol, and some zen:

Perhaps you should actually see the film before forming such a extreme opinion. Though what does it matter now. Your narrow mind had already made its decision.

I've never understood why most anime fans will get so rabid if you dare to refer to it as 'cartoons'. Reminds me of the comic book fans who insist that they're only called 'graphic novels', even though that term only refers to the bound volumes and not the monthly issues...

OMG YOU MEAN JAPANIMATION ISN'T ANIMATED? I AM SHOCK!

or

How dare you sully the image of anime by even insinuating that it's in the same catagory as infantile western cartoons? Surely you can't compare two animated mediums to one another, it's apples and oranges! Kami-sama! Sacriledge! Brain death!

*cough*

Channelling the stupid is hard.

And the wonderful thing is there is so many flavors of stupid in that board. Something for everyone.

(dude, it mysteriously ate my previous reply...)

I say we put them all in a sack and shake 'em! Roll them around in some panko, it should stick to the pretentious layer of goo.

(Hey random stalker note, did you wear a kick-ass kefka costume at sakura-con, ~3 years ago? I took my friend's picture with you in her Rosa costume. Small wanky world!)

Why yes I did! I was there again this year, did you go? If so, who were you dressed as? (I was JP from Digimon Frontier and Quina from FFIX)

Huh. I know this one chick who'll lecture me at length if I dare call a graphic novel a trade paperback or vice versa.

I eventually gave up and called them 'the really big comics' which opened another can of worms.

But...but...a graphic novel is a trade paperback. Except for the very few that are printed mass market size.

Every time I try that, at least one person thinks I'm talking about porn, or something. The graphic = pictures thing doesn't seem to work very well.

I flash a Shirow Masamune illustration at anyone who asks me why I am reading comic books. One look at the prettah, The Major, and the weapons and they get the picture pretty quickly.

I'm tired of both sides. One side insists that all of it's for kids, and the other behaves like they are children.

This mystifies me, too... although it's a great tool for multiplying the wank! "Uh... people, it's just a cartoon/comic book. Who is buttfucking who does not have a huge impact on your life, health, and finances." *KABOOM*

Me? Yes! I watch cartoons and read comic books, and think about the characters naked! My inner child, my inner teenager, and my outer adult are great friends, and I am totally okay with this!

Hooray! I love Miyazaki and the author's Chrestomanci series.

Is there a release date? And what company is translating it?

Looks like June 10th for a release date (it has the widest initial release ever of an 'anime') and Pete Docter from Pixar doing the translations/producing the english stuff.

I was so happy to see that Howl's Moving Castle was coming here so soon. My mom is a big fan of the book it is based on (the Chrestomanci series you mentioned, ya?) so she's giving me the books to read in exchange for a movie ticket for her and I (but she's open-minded and stuff about adaptations).

Miyazaki is the anime I can always count on.

I don't think HMC is part of the Chrestomancis series, those were another set of books written by the same author, Diana Wynne Jones.

Naw. It's from a different set. I remember there being a semi-sequel, involving... a magic carpet and a transformed cat. Or something.

Read her stuff! she kicks ass. One of my favourites is Hexwood.

The movie's not as good as the book, sadly, but it's an interesting take on the very basic story.

Plus, Kimura Takuya as Howl == absolutely perfect *_* I fangirl like mad.

A movie with a war in it =/= an anti-war propaganda film (refering to Iraq).

Truly, all great war epics have such lines as "I am the Prince of the neighboring nation" and have the war end over some small talk. Many Miyazaki films have war in them, and in some ways, this was the weakest emphasis I've seen (Nausicaa always make me wince with the bugs and dramatic injuries). I think it was put in to keep up the trend and to make the love story dramatic enough for your average Japanese audience member.

And truly, who has seen a completely perfect book to movie adaptation? Nothing ever matches up to what you have in your head. Get over it.
