Current mood:With BLOODY craps.
Current music:A-Ha - I dream myself alive

... What was the subject again?!
In [info]tws_support, we're introduced to a woman who paints with her own menstruation blood...

And to an odd mini-wank about religion, spell casting, logic (or lack thereof) and What The Hell Ever.

I quite enjoyed the "no, I'm more disinterested than you!" give-and-take between lucifera_shadow and mylaptopisevil.

Huh. I actually rather like the paintings. And mixed with acrylic, the blood's all sealed in. Interesting.

Very interesting indeed! So forwarding to my art history teacher. Lessee if her current class can stomach it, muahaha! (buncha squeamish girly-girls, nyeah)

I rather like the paintings too; the last one, with the gold mixed in, is really cool.

There's a painting made from gold and poo in my local art gallery.

It was very costly, apparently.

On a more serious note, I believe the philosophy and skill with which she creates the paintings make them very valid and significant art works. Yey.

Her ability to dismiss flames is quite nice as well.

I was seriously impressed when I looked - there's a lot of depth in the work. I'm not an art student of any kind, but I know what I like.

Ooh, look at us, all serious and thoughtful. Hee.

Even better flame response.

She's been quite recognized by the art and feminism communities as well, so looks like we're not the only ones. ;)
On the use of the blood, doesn't it have the most unique texture? *mezmerized*

Now if you want real WTF in the art world, check out Tracey Emin. woo-oo. Speshul.

See, now I think that's interesting, but fucked up. And I'm sort of glad the picture doesn't work.

Menstrual blood paintings seem almost prosaic in comparison. Yikes.

I think the intense reactions that people are having says a lot about the way we view women's bodies in general. I kind of get a surreal vibe seeing the actual words "menstrual blood and acrylic on paper," but the art itself doesn't seem inappropriate at all. I really don't think that the level of horror people are coming up with is justified.

Agreed. Seems like people equate mentrual blood with other bodily excretions, which is sort of sad. I admit the idea was sort of eyebrow-raising at first, but then I looked and thought about it and it doesn't bother me. I'd hang them on my wall.

It is sort of surreal, but the art is... pretty. And while nicely tied in with the blood-medium in themes, it's not amazingly shocking or weird. Could be gigantic vaginas spouting clots and baby faces, but they're just paintings.

As someone who wanked there, I...can't see why *not* to equate it with other bodily excretions. It's basically waste product.

I mean, otherwise? Ew, but not my thing, just like the guy who paints with shit. With a bit of a "oh, God, not the moon-time crowd again" thrown in, I admit. Squishy New Ageness grosses me out more than any bodily substance ever could.

Agreed. Even "blood and acrylic on paper" would raise an eyebrow, but quite as high or for quite the same reasons, I think. And just to add to all of the prior comments about the quality of the work, she is so talented. I didn't know quite what to expect, but those are interesting, lovely paintings.

Well, it's more like "blood and uterine tissue," which in my brain makes it worse than plain ol' blood.

I'd be just as...meh and generally disgusted if someone were painting with bile, though. Just because it's in my body (or comes out of it at some point) doesn't make it awesome. I'm happy it does what it's supposed to, but that's where the appreciation ends on my end. ;)

I've seen people wank about this so many times. Get the hell over it.
I rather like a lot of the paintings. And personally, I can't muster that much disgust. I only mind the stuff in the first place because it doesn't smell like normal blood, and I wouldn't want to be touching other people's due to possibility of disease. Painted, dried, sealed in, not smelly, nothing for me to be grossed out about.
I imagine it's annoying stuff to work with. Painting with regular blood is a pain, it dries and gets sticky so quick, and it's not really worth it to have to keep getting more fresh stuff. And it totally ruins paintbrushes. Menstrual blood has more, uh, texture, and probably has the same problems getting all sticky. Although it wouldn't be as difficult to keep getting more.

All I have to say about this is (1) at least the paintings are pretty this time, and (2) Seasonale is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

There's a damn good reason they call it the curse. Promoting gender equality =/= finger-painting with one's bodily excretions, KTHXBYE.
