Not just Germany. The Red Cross refuses blood from anyone who's at increased risk for HIV infection. This includes any man who's had sex with another man, even once, since 1977, and any woman who's had sex with a man who's had sex with a man, even once, since 1977. (Also, if you've had sex with said woman in the last twelve months. And note that at no point does the qualification "unprotected" come into play. Oi.)

Personally, I'd think that if you've caught HIV in the early Eighties, it would've shown the fuck up by now, at least in tests, but then what do I know, right?

	If you'd caught HIV in the early eighties, you'd be dead by now. An ex-boyfriend of my mother's died in 1982, and they knew so little about the disease back then that they wouldn't even let her touch him when she went to visit. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

The British blood transfusion service section on donations problems caused by HIV and other viruses has these exclusions:

You should never give blood if:

1 You carry the hepatitis B virus, the hepatitis C virus or the HIV virus.
2 You're a man who's had sex with another man, even "safe sex" using a condom.
3 You've ever worked as a prostitute.
4 You've ever injected yourself with drugs - even once.

You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with:
1 A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female).
2 A prostitute.
3 Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs.
4 Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates.
5 Anyone of any race who has been sexually active in parts of the world where AIDS/HIV is very common. This includes countries in Africa.

It also excludes people: who've received blood since 1980, have had a tatoo or piercing or acupuncture in the last six months, recived human pituitary extract before 1985, or a bunch of other stuff.

It's amazing anyone in the UK *can* give blood.

My father, who is in his later 50's, still believes this. I had heard several years ago that heterosexual women were the group with the highest percentage of new AIDS cases (and that may not be true by now), but when I tried to tell him about that during our latest argument on the subject, he said, "No, no, most people who die of AIDS are still gay."

...I don't get him. He also don't read any books written by a woman because they talk about clothes too much, and he says that gay adoption is a bad idea because the child wouldn't have any idea what to call the parents. And yet he knows my orientation. I really, really don't get him. Love him, but don't get him.

...err, I can sort of see where he's coming from by a medical standpoint. The anus is actually more prone to tearing during sex because it lacks the thick, multiple, and self-lubricating layers of a vagina, BUT (ahahahaheehee) people, especially doctors, tend to forget what lube and condoms are used for.

	It's like that law Jon Stewart was talking about, where Texan adoptive parents can't be gay, and it's perfectly okay for authorities to observe them/spy on them to check that they're not OMG TEH GAY.
