Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
May have been posted before, as it's old, but I'm so amused I don't much care.

In which there is much arguing over the INCREDIBLY important topic of whether or not links should be underlined

My favourite bit is when Mendel claims that not underlining is like not labeling the light switch "LIGHTS" and an affronted D. F. Manno chimes in, "Mendel, the switches in my entryway and in my bedroom do _not_ turn on a light. They make a nearby electrical outlet 'live.' "

EDIT: The debate resurfaces in the April archives!

That ... is the dumbest argument ever.

(This underline, while not a link, is brought to you by The Society for Freedom of Link Style Choice. "Your Link, Your Choice.")

If someone can't find links because they aren't underlined I think they need to take basic internet use class. Especially since the website being discussed is Yahoo, it's all links!

Hmmm. I'm a bit torn on this, since one of my main beefs with LJ is that links generally aren't underlined in journal layouts, and the link text color is barely distinguishable from the regular text color.

But the :hover is a happy medium, and if the link color is distinguishable (without being bright pink or something), it doesn't require *that* much angsting. And non-underlined links do look better.MY OPINION

...and why does this guy care what some corporation that is in no way connected with him does with it's web site?

A lot of the message boards nowadays don't have automatic highlighting and underlining for their links, so yes, it is easy to miss them sometimes. However, most of the time, people are pretty obvious about the fact that they're posting a link, it shouldn't be a huge mystery. If you see a line of text that seems to be referring to a site or image or whatever, mouse it over. It's not that hard.

I'd say this is wanky, but, trust me, it is TWENTY MILLION BILLION times wankier when it happens repeatedly at your workplace.

I got so annoyed long ago with odd link color combos and font colors in general that I set my browser exactly how I want it and don't bother turning off my color preferences unless someone comments on how pretty a page is. Oh, and there's an option to set links as always underlined, which is nice. ::pats Mozilla::
