When Anti-Christians Attack!
Over in NonWiccanPagans, Forestwraith posts about the [PAGANS: How Christian are you? Test] (must signed up to lousy dating service in order to take). Other pagans weigh in with their scores and their commentary, most to the effect that the quiz maker seems to think Christianity and Paganism are mutually exclusive.

Everyting above 45% appears to be Christian in Denial

CHRISTIAN IN DENIAL
You are kidding yourself and everyone around you. You are just a christian in denial. Give it up and go back to church: you don't understand any wordlview or religion other than christianity, and you drag your christianity into everything you try to do to seperate yourself from it. Get lost, Jesus fish brain!

son_of_art, the apparent creator of the test, weighs int o tell everyone they aren't pagan - they are in fact OMG dirty rotten CHRISTIANS!!!

Some choice exerpts from son_of_art:
"Your morals about sex are shaped by christianity. Why don't you reconsider them from the lens of actual pagan beliefs?

Your idea that books are more important than the effect that they have on the world is also a christian "bible-worshipping" impulse that you have not overcome yet.

You cannot be a witch and a christian. See the bible for what Hell awaits those who practise magic, divination, or have "familiar spirits".

All Gods are not aspects of one, and no pagans outside of Plato's stupid tiny anti-greek and anti-pagan school of thinking ever thought so.

Love is VERY important, and GODS can send messages. But there is no "one god" and Love is not just a matter of being a moral christian." [link]

*******

"The problem with christianity isn't just PEOPLE MISINTERPRETING it. That is what christians try to say to avoid the responsibility for the FACT that their religion teaches hate and intolerance IN THE BIBLE. There's no danger of misinterpreting the bible, when it says "Kill gay people" or "only jesus can get you to heaven- you diviners, adulterers, pagans, false god followers, and fornicators are all going to burn", which it DOES actually say." [link]

"They've already done it. You are a disgusting traitor to the true Spirit of the Past, our sacred Ancestors, and the True Gods. You are a defender of christianity, and I wish I could be a fly on the walls of the Underworld when you are smothered amongst the shades of obscurity." [link]

*******

"Guys... guys... come on! The Quiz wasn't meant to be taken this seriously." [link]

(further in that thread) "If it wouldn't be for that Koran, women would not be suffering so much. Think about other people for once."

*******

"It is a fact that the dead drink from the Well of Forgetfulness." [link]

*******
forest_wraith's brief note near the end:

"The 2 of you that are upset, are just irriated because you had to face up to being a Christian in denial! *giggles*" [link]

And as a bonus, a mini grudge match between son_of_art and wire_mother!

A good portion of your former christianity still holds power over you. It's just below the surface, threatening to pour out.

Apparently, believing that the Bible and Koran are worth protecting and that you can be a witch and a Christian at the same time means that my inner Christianity is just WAITING to burst out. *snork!*

...Plato was anti-Greek?

Oh, wait, anti-greek. The lowercase g must make a difference.

I took that quiz. Apparently I'm a Christian in denial too. Which makes the pentagram tattoo on my chest a bit odd, I suppose.

Oh dear goodness, yes. He's got a lot of hatred for someone who tries to be a part of any religion that bases itself on love.

He seems to be more of a Christian than any kind of paganist. After all, paganism isn't even one organized movement, but a catch-all term for traditional, non-mainstream religions--some of which fill the bill of being Christian as well.

Warped conceptions, indeed.

"He's got a lot of hatred for someone who tries to be a part of any religion that bases itself on love."

I cannot figure what he wants people to base their lives on. I mean, different pantheons require different virtues. The Greeks prized order and beauty, the Celts were all about honor and eloquence, and more I forgot.

I do not know of any pantheon that is based on writing stupid quizzes and flaming.

Also, I notice no mention of Hinduism and Judaism by son _of_art. I guess it is harder to bullshit about continuously practiced religions that are more than 2000 years old.

Wouldn't Hinduism count as paganism though? I always thought paganism, in the generic sense, meant any religion that was not Judaism, Christianity, or Islam.

(Which is why I always give one of my non-religious friends a funny look when she starts going on about how she loves paganism's belief system, 'cause I'm like, Dude? Which one? There's quite a few.)

*nod* I know some neo-pagans who do have an interest in the Hindu pantheon. I am not sure if they would call it pagan, but I see no reason why not.

As for son_of_art, I came to that conclusion because there is no mention that, yes, in at least one major polytheistic religion, the gods are considered part of one greater source. Hell, I associate that belief with Hinduism than with Christianity.

There was also no mention of mystical traditions in monotheistic religions. The Hebrew Bible, especially, made a distinction between miracles from belief in the God of Israel and what all them other tribes try to do (and necromancy--I remember that as a big no-no).

See the bible for what Hell awaits those who practise magic, divination, or have "familiar spirits".

See also the Bible for why Leviticus is pointless and for the cute little story of the sorcerer where the phrase "he who is not against me is with me" comes from.

The Roman Empire didn't take away the basic rights of people, especially the right to worship as they choose, according to the ways of their ancestors.

The Romans didn't walk around the world killing people for stupid reasons... at times, [they were] imperialistic

Christianity destroyed literacy.

Rome didn't commit genocide.

ALL people could be Roman Citizens.

*nods vehemently*

Someone obviously doesn't understand their Roman history. Rome's strategy in incorporating territories into their citizenship was that they would incorporate the territory's gods into their pantheon, while the territory would do the same for Roman gods. This, obviously, wouldn't exactly work for the monotheistic religions.

It was political strategy, not some sort of concept of religious freedoms, that was involved in the situation. At least, this is what I gathered from my Roman history class.
