Posted here because although it takes place in a fandom community, it has fuck-all to do with fandom.

[info]lotr_addict is an "elite" community on LJ. Members must fill out an application that asks basic questions about LOTR, the answers on which community members vote. This is a way to weed out the squealing Leggy fangirls without being too exclusive. Generally quiet, the comm has more application posts than discussions, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Upon one or two prior occasions, people have applied, gotten "no" votes, and then wanked. These threads end pretty quickly, but this one decided to latch on and not let go.

24lifecrisis is 14 (yes, a minor, but these posts are in the community and are thus fair game) and posts his application. He is not the first under-15 to do so, and some of the others have been accepted. People are not impressed with his lack of grammar and other things, and vote no. He replies with several snarky retorts, which are then deleted.

Deciding that the community is unfair, he breaks the rules about non-member posting, compares himself to Martin Luther, and nails his protests to the community door. (I'm in there with some lengthy replies, but I don't think they're wanky, just long-winded. I'm not moving this to i_wank; I'll take my chances.) [info]hckyboy00 declares his patience with 24lifecrisis to be over.

Fun times are had by all.

Bonus: Ranting about how "GRAMMER" is not important.

Holy, doesn't these people understand we have a dwindling supply of words and need to conserve?

Check out the f_w userinfo again.

Although, I think the rule about "not wanking minors, since they aren't allowed on the site" is getting out of date, since now, practically no one can get a new account (without paying!) and anonymous commenting isn't allowed anymore. Though it still might be enabled on otf_wank, I'm not sure.

Posts to communities are fair game. Unless they say in the post that they are underage. Or they make it self-evident (i.e. "I wuz smoking in the boyzlockerroom during 9th grade PE yesterday when suddenly I totally wanked.")

Just one sentence on...

Aside from anything else, I always thought wanking the young'uns (especially that young) is rather like shooting fish in a barrel.

For my barrel fish shooting, I favor nukes. Preferably in the triple digit megaton range.

Does anyone else think this community is just kind of... stupid?

Depends. What is the antecedent of "this"?

The LotR one, not otf_wank. It just seems sort of... wanky.

I was wondering why they don't just set it so only members can post...

I know, you'd think they'd have people email the applications or something rather than posting them that way.

It reminds me of the nonuglyX and other ratings communities in that sense.

No. Yes. Whichever it is that means I think it's stupid.

What in the name of Bob is hckyboy00's problem? He considers it a reason for rejection if the applicant happens to like a part of the book he dislikes? That's not even elitist anymore, that's just plain stupid. I have half a mind to apply with a 5000-word post where all the answers are connected somehow to "The Scouring of the Shire" just to tick him off.

Also, for a community that presumably wants to be a place where you can "escape the elfyboppers" they sure did a fine job choosing their background image. Of all the characters and locations in the movie, they pick Legolas? Methinks the community protests too much.

That community seems less elitist than... just stupid and wanky. Do they seriously expect people to write academic essays in order to get into their little club? I really can't stand "my cock devotion to my fandom is bigger than yours" fans.

I actually agree with the lotr_addicts' stance on applications. The application is not just a way to show you're not a reeediculous fangirl--it's also a way to demonstrate whether or not your style of writing and thinking will fit in with (or add anything to) the already established community. Several people said they didn't want "MLA citations"--they just wanted complete sentences with a coupla references to specific sections of the book or what not.

That seems perfect to me, truthfully.
