when someone who is in the majority race of a population is unfamiliar with minority cultures, they may make some mistakes and say some dumb things to minorities.

It makes sense if you look at it on a systemic basis rather than an individual basis. The system is by default such that white people are going to experience a lot fewer problems specifically due to the color of their skin than black people (or asians, latina/os, etc.) even if individual black people happen to hate them. Frankly I get to go through most of my life without even having to wonder if people's negative reactions to me are due to the color of my skin or just because I'm a bitch, and that's the heart of privilege right there - that I don't have to worry about it.

And walking up to random black people and asking them to discuss ebonics is probably not something you should admit online no matter how new you are to the internet, or how much your wacky Pentecostal family screwed up your brain.

Indeed they do, but that's part of the system of false-victimisation they use to prop up their power and privilege, which is what racism is all about. It's like misogynists claiming that all men are really under the thumb of women, and such, to somehow justify them hating teh female sex.

I really do sympathize with how hard it is to be told that you're secretly doing something you abhor and would never intentionally do.

But, you know, in my experience people who really are trying not to be racist, even when they're upset about being splashed with the same crazy-paint as the dyed-in-the-wool, won't-hire-them-affirmative-action-whores, what's-all-the-fuss-about-slavery's-over, sheesh-why-do-they-hafta-talk-so-lazy people ...cut people of color a BREAK for not being psychic enough to instantly read your trying-hard credentials through your fucking stupid questions.

My own favorite is "Can I touch your hair?" Makes me want to say, "Can I get a skin-dyejob or something so I don't have to be in the same race with anyone who thinks other people are their flipping STUFFED ANIMALS?"

I love hair, too. I gaze, I fantasize sometimes... I only touch when in some way invited. Maybe I'm prudish that way.

But the people I've seen say this aren't the same people who are physical with everybody. And they're not asking people they KNOW well. Not, you know, the girls' grooming party kind of thing. It's this dense exoticization move, when somebody much like the wank's OP asks what she'd never ask people of her own race (because she thinks she KNOWS what their hair feels like, and thinks she doesn't know what the random-black-person's hair feels like).

"Wow, you're so weird and different from me! And your hairstyle looks like it took so many hours that I want to see if it's messable! Let me try!"

Me: Grrrrr. (And it's not even my hair.)

numerous dictionaries list prejudice based on race as the definition of racism but we can ignore the white man's book for just this moment because it's really not necessary to make the point.

I think she's referring to this new way of thinking that minorities cannot be racist because racism has to do with social power. And, apparently, white people have power in every corner of the world, so this applies everywhere. Minorities can be prejudiced, but apparently not racist. Some of my friends had to go through a racism seminar, which taught them such gems as, "White people have no culture!"

Oh, now you're asking what we REALLY think, and with Earth logic and all that.

What I really think is that, yeah, in general the interracial-relationship situation beats the "STAY WITH YOUR OWN!!" anti-misegenation thing all hollow. But OTOH, it's not always the golden-age-of-Aquarius-I'm-in-love-with-the-content-of-his/her-character either.

To compare every white-black couple to the slaveowners raping the slaves, as has been done if not by that guy (can't remember this morning), is way over the top. And also it ignores those blacks who place value on dating/impregnating whites as whites, a group maybe less actual than overheard conversations on public transit would suggest ('cause, you know, boasting? Teens?).

But the Nipposexual guy with his headbands and his postmodern theory really creeped me out. I don't know what I would want people who find themselves fetishizing racial characteristics to do about it (if I owned the universe), but asserting they're the wave of the bright new globalized future wasn't it.

But my post? Really about the wank, which would burn brightly if these two posters ever met.
